4.1 - That's nonsense
The Wii isn't hurting the industry. It expands it.

A large number of non-gamers have been interested in gaming for years, but most regard pad controls too complicated. That's why Buzz and Guitar Hero with their simple controls have been such a great success on PS2.

As long as there's demand for complicated games, they will be developed. Same goes for casual gaming. These two aren't dependant on the failure of other.

While you are right in some ways, you have to realize by expanding the casual market companies will be tempted to spend more time and money on the casual side. If they can make a game like this which probably didn't cost anything near what Halo 3 did and sell more then why not do that?

Did you watch E3, especially the Microsoft and nintendo keynote speeches? The casual markets are more important to them now, so they stray away from anything hardcore and focus less attention.

In the end its bad for gamers like us here on the front lines of the N4G console wars lol. It might not be the end of us, but it doesn't push developers to make games that won't sell to the mass public.

So if a sh1t game like this makes it to 10m then I guess the best game on the entire system and one of my favourite games in recent times - MARIO GALAXY - must be coming up to at least 30m by now.

How about No more Heros, Zack n Wiki, Okami?

They must be coming up to 10m at least.

I mean, the public are intelligent people aren't they? They will only buy the best games ...

...and the best system. Right?

6 - This is funny
Here's a list of debunked arguments regarding the Wii so far:
-it will fail
-it's a fad
-it kills hardcore gaming
-it's the reason for Sony's hardships
-it doesn't have hardcore games
-it doesn't have 3rd party support
-it doesn't have 3rd party hardcore support

...and finally, this news will hopefully mark the end for the argument of low software sales.

What's next?

It's not so much arguing over low software sales, it's arguing over low software sales of "Good" games or "Gamer" games.

No more heros, Zack n Wiki, Okami, Boom Blox. How have they sold?

What are the top selling titles on PS3?
MGS4, GTA4, Call of Duty 4, GTP etc.

360?
Gears of War, Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, GTA4

What are the top selling games on Wii?
Wii Fit, Mario and Sonic, Big Brain Academy, Carnival Games
...and in regions that don't get Wii Sports bundled with the console ... Wii Sports.

I really REALLY hope The Conduit does well. Nintendo needs a kick up the a$$ to show them that gamer games still sell.
And hopefully they'll realise this before they make the next Zelda too casual.

6.3 - To jtucker78
The highest rated two exclusive games on Wii, Super Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Bros Brawl, have sold about ten million each.

Okami, Boom Blox and Xack&Wiki have sold at least million combined as of this point. It's not that bad considering the development costs. The same cannot be said for major flops on the expensive consoles like Lair.

Sorry Rute, but I think you've taken a bit of a side step with your argument.
"Okami, Boom Blox and Xack&Wiki have sold at least million combined as of this point. It's not that bad considering the development costs. The same cannot be said for major flops on the expensive consoles like Lair."

Comparing 3 of the best games that the Wii has to offer against one of PS3s worst games.
Funnily enough Lair a TERRIBLE PS3 game has actually outsold two of the titles you just mentioned (two of the BEST Wii games) and it is not far behind the third.

So what is your point here?
Are you saying that devs should develop for the PS3 because even if you make a bad hardcore game then although it won't sell great it should make some of your money back?
Or are you saying: don't bother building a decent gamers game for the Wii because even if it is good no one will buy it?
OR are you saying: if you want to develop a game for the Wii make sure is is some casual cr@p like Mario and Sonic?

Please enlighten me.

I'm glad you haven't given a motivational speech to High Voltage otherwise they'd probably can their Conduit project after your sales projection.
;-)
Maybe we should get a campain together to try and rally the casuals to convert them to deathmatch fans!

6.5 - I'll go into details
Super Mario Galaxy and Super SMash Bros Brawl are hardcore games and they are two of the most critically acclaimed titles on the Wii so it kinda makes sense comparing them to hardcore games on PS3 and X360. To my understanding the only 360 or PS3 games that have sold more than SMG and SSBB are COD4 and Halo 3 (not counting combined sales on both platforms).

I've read that a typical PS3 game has to sell over million copies for it to break even with development costs, so Lair isn't definitely encouraging developers to make bad hc games. Lair has sold about 500k copies. If we compare it to a crappy Wii hc game like Red Steel with over million copies sold, it's evident which has made more money.

My guess is that SMG, SSBB, Boom Blox, Zack&Wiki and Okami have each made profit. SMG and SSBB with high game quality and crazy sales and the other three with low dev costs and nice sales.

Rute - 531 days 13 hours ago
6.7 - Summary
Great games on the Wii usually produce enough money to compensate the development costs, be it superb high-cost games like SMG or innovative low budget titles like Zack & Wiki.

Games on PS3 and Xbox 360 usually have to be graphics heavy in order to succeed, which makes them incredibly expensive to make, and that favors tried-and-true formula over more risky innovation (t.ex. Lair).

(Psst. have a bubble once again. I think nobody's watching)

You bring up some good points.
Kojima said that to develop on the PS3 they needed 4 times as many people.

I'm glad there are still devs that want to take risks and aim high with their games. Opting for a cheaper simpler version of your game is good business if it will make OK returns, but isn't easy for some artists to stomach when there is the possibility of getting close to their artistic vision.
I'm glad there are still devs like Kojima around.

I have great respect for Miyamoto too, however he isn't as involved in Zelda and Mario as he used to be and is more interested in catering for non-core-gamers. I guess I'm just disappointed that the Wii isn't as great this generation (graphics and tech-wise) as the Gamecube was in the last.
I know that the Wii is the far more popular and WAY more lucrative console, but I loved Mario and Zelda with the phenomenal graphics, and I was hoping for another graphically stunning Zelda this generation. Zelda in the past has always been a stunning looking game for me. I always used to say Zelda had everything, gameplay, graphics etc. Ocarina - obviously amazing for the time! MajMask. Windwaker draw distances as you approached islands was amazing. TP was really great for a gamecube. Now I'm gutted as the next Zelda won't be stunning for this generation and Miyamoto says it needs to appeal to the public more too. I'm sure it will play well - as every Wii owner chimes in "It's all about gameplay, It's all about gameplay!" Yes, but Zelda used to have everything, and now it won't.

I guess I'm in a minority now though, but there are many other angry gamers out there that feel cheated by Ninty.
I respect that they have to make money, and I agree that they are doing the intelligent thing. I'd be doing the same thing if I was Nintendo CEO ... but as a gamer I don't like it and it depresses me that I'll have to wait a generation ... maybe two, before I'm playing the Zelda that I want to play.
Hopefully Fallout 3 will be good, it has certainly taken Zelda's graphics and draw distance crown.

Cheers mate, have a bub too ;-)

I'm out of bubbles now so catch you in another discussion some time.

It's funny, if you asked back in the snes/genesis days how much would a game featuring both mario and sonic sell, and they'd say 20 billion copies.

Sega should ki11 off Sonic, and start making some decent games.

This game is actually alot of fun when you have a decent sized group of friends around. I'm guessing that the haters here on this thread haven't actually played it. It sure ain't the game of the year, but it's solid, and a crapload of fun with a group.

I own a wii and I don't own it; a cheap cash in cross over title that has little to no redeeming value whatsoever. Why would Sonic and Mario be at the Olympic games? Wouldn't Mario 'Shroom addiction get him banned?
