Breaking: The Wii Does Not Appear To Be A Fad, Says Analyst

Is the Wii a fad? It's been a rather a hot topic of debate ever since the console first gained mainstream popularity, but after extensive periods of research and analysis, DFC analyst David Cole has determined that the Wii does not appear to be a fad. Well, for one, the 360 doesn't mainly have FPS like that link states. Furthermore, more and more FPS titles are coming out for PS3 also.

I saw with my own 2 eyes, the wii become a fad. I was in EB games and i was next to a girl who was holding her new Wii, trying to choose a game. OFcourse she couldn't get Zelda, Metroid or A mario game.. because she said her friends already had THOSE games so she needed something different..cez ya kNow..GoTtA Hv SmFin DiFfErnt Nd bE KeWlZ.

Im sure some people are really keen on their wii's, but i can almost promise that girl aint played it ne more...n im sure thats true with many others...in fact i all my friends who have 1 dont even play it.

The Wii is a fad. Fads can last a while. Boy Bands lasted way too long. The thing about games is that the Wii fad will last long enough to get Nintendo to the next generation. That is when we will see Nintendos true staying power.

Plenty of factors, but right now the Wii is the fastest selling console ever. So maybe they'll break 100 million without a good % of the hardcore that PS had over the last 2 generations.

9.1 - PS sales suck? Ask EA

PS3 made twice the money the Wii made (153 million versus 75 million) for EA the last fiscal year despite the fact that Wii has twice the install base. That is very telling on the "fad" issue, especially considering that the Wii (excuse for a) console is not only nearly half as cheap, but so are the games.

The attach rates for PS3 and Wii are very similar actually, except most wii games sold are mini-games (fads), first party games, and shovelware. The few 3rd party games that are AAA, including Boom Blox from EA, actually bombed, which is sad considering that as of now Spore is planned for the Wii but not for consoles that actually sell games.

While PS3 and Wii have similar amount of games sold per console, not only do we have to take in account that PS3 is more expensive, but also that you can spend a lot more money on media and downloadable content. Not to be outdone, the ratio of AAA PS3 games by 3rd parties attach rates to the one of the Wii is huge. The Wii is not a viable option for 3rd party AAA games.

10 - It all depends on what is your definition of fad....

If fad means selling a lot for a small amount of time, or simply suddenly stop selling (or both), then the Wii might not be a fad. However, if fad means, specifically in the console world, that most consumers buy the console as an impulse buy not to really dedicate some time with it, that the owners don't spend much money on it, that most of the consoles gather dust, that it is used mostly if not only at parties, and that most of what you find on it is shovelware, then the Wii is indeed a Fad.

Ask EA where do they make most money, and you'll get the same response from Activision, Ubisoft, THQ, Sega, Capcom, Konami, Namco... and that response is that they definitely don't make much money on Nintendo consoles. For gamers, that only means that the Wii will keep being supported only by Nintendo and since Nintendo will keep making bucketloads of profit undeservedly, they will never make an online gaming or media service, an interactive 3D social world or achievements for their games.

If the Wii is not a Fad, then it's just a successful gimmick and an abomination to the game industry. Neither the gamers that maintain the industry nor most of the publishers or devs that make a living out of it are satisfied with it. I hope Nintendo pulls the plug sometime soon and that they come out with a console, not a sad excuse for one. I am only glad though that neither Microsoft nor Sony will be taken by surprise, as they learned a lesson: Make gimmicks too for the morons, don't just appeal to the hardcore gamer. Be a PS2, not a Wii.

First of all, what is it with you and EA?

Second, "abomination to the gaming industry"? Really? I know that some people are less than satisfied with their Wiis but... really... an abomination? And come on, think about the facts. From an average Joe gamer's perspective, there really isn't anything wrong with the Wii- it has its fair share of AAA games, namely Brawl and Super Mario Galaxy (which, keep in mind, is the highest-rated exclusive game of this generation). I'm very satisfied with mine (and no, NOT a fanboy! I also own a PS3 and good PC) and I know many people who are happy with theirs.

Third, your argument seems to be made chiefly around the fact that third party developers can't make money off the Wii. I should point out that's really not true- keep in mind that Guitar Hero 3, the bestselling game of 2007, has sold the most copies on the Wii. And also: Nintendo consoles have had trouble selling third party games since the N64. You're blaming poor third party sales on the Wii's gimmicky-ness, but the truth is that Nintendo has probably sold more 3rd party with the games than it ever did with the N64 or Gamecube.

I don't mean to pick fights, because there's little I hate more than idiotic N4G fanboy flamewars; they lead nowhere and are a tremendous waste of time. I have a PS3 and love it (I'll admit it's probably my first console), but I also love my Wii and get considerably irked when people such as yourself suggest that it will usher in some sort of anti-gaming apocalypse.

what isnt a fad then?because disco was a music movement and is still influential in todays modern rock(especially with daft punk and justice).So what isnt a fad...is the suv a fad since gas prices are so high?

i dont think that Boom Blox would have sold better on the xbox or ps3 thats just stupid you think more "real gamers" would buy that game?

i also think that the reason that third party devs are only doing crap games is because they havent realy understod the controls yet, and by the way hardcore games sell on the wii look at resident evil 4:wii editon it sold quite a lot the reason other hardcore games doesnt sell i think is because they are so crappy (far cry, red steel) those who are going to buy a fps usualy checks a review on the internet first but those which are buying a party game dont.

its like you have to play fps games to be hardcore, i consider myself hardcore gamer and i have all three consoles but i cant say i play 360 or ps3more than my wii, actually i play my wii and 360 most, mainly wii now (live in europe just got brawl). my ps3 was awesome with gta but it wasnt like the former gta;s i cleared all missions then it wasnt fun anymore. on the 360 its halo 3 and skate mostly. and i am so tired of fanboys saying ""all my friend has wii and they dont evenn play it"" youre just freakin jealous because wii sells like... oil.

if you want to see fads you just go to any of the news regarding the VGcharts where the ps3 is in 3º place, click in comments, and you will see lots of fads, shameless ones, that only aproves VGcharts when it shows PS3 on top, see if the Wii boys said something when MGS made PS3 top the Wii in japan, they said nothing...
