'Alone in the Dark' Wii Loses Fancy Tech And Open World, Adds Motion Controls - Is That Enough?

MTV Multiplayer writes: "Publishers have largely moved away from adapted versions of their high-tech games for Wii, but they still happen, such as this month's "Alone in the Dark."

"Alone in the Dark" doesn't feel much like a game designed for Wii. That's probably because it isn't.

But for Wii-exclusive owners in search of survival horror before Tecmo delivers "Fatal Frame," "Alone in the Dark" is their best bet. In that respect, how does it hold up?

It's hit or miss. Much of the visual fidelity and large set pieces that made "Alone in the Dark" impressive enough to keep my eyes shut during a spoiler aren't found in the Wii version. These environmental edits mean there are actual story differences between the Wii version and the one arriving on Xbox 360, PC and PS3. New levels were constructed to follow the basic story of 'Alone in the Dark.'"

They should have cancelled the toned down PS2 and Wii versions and instead focused on 360 and PS3 version's driving mechanics and other flaws.
Seriously, the last thing Wii needs is a watered down version of 360 game. They should either make games from ground up for Wii or forget about it.

The tech is far better with the other two so i really dont see how they didnt focus on the 360 title.

Even if they made it from ground up, due dead line it might have even looked worse( both gameplay and gfx wise)
building everything from ground up requires more TIME.
And in bizz TIME= MONEY= deadline changes= MORE MONEY.

they would focuss less on the 360 title etc etc.

Also story is almost the same...so....i really dont think it would have made difference. Although they could have made a different Alone in the dark just for the Wii...they could have hired a different team or something.

They shouldn't have wasted the time to make a wii version if it's going to be crappy, it's already hard for people to justify buying hardcore wii games based on sales. I would've put money in a diff IP.

It doesnt matter if it is crappy though. That doesnt affect sales for Wii games. They figured they'd make a quick buck on the Wii version I guess.

@MK there really isn't a wii verison there are just two ps2 versions one with motion controls and the other without. The screens for the wii. one look and you know it isn't even doing the wii justice.

I would much rather the wii not have this game.

Also tecmo isn't technically delivering fatal frame , its nintendo, I believe the director is the only thing from nintendo. also if the rumors are true nintendo bought the fatal frame ip altogether.

EDIT: i saw the diasgree and just to clarify i meant the wii version is a direct port of the ps2 version.

No open world? No sale, that was one of the catches that made me want the game anyway. Of course I'm getting it for PS3 but still, that sucks for people who were looking forward to it on the Wii.

I really think that Nintendo should have tried to at least make the Wii an HD console with more advanced hardware because if they did, these type of things wouldn't be happening. The majority of the Wii's games really don't require advanced hardware and processing, but for the hardcore games coming out for the Wii like Alone in the Dark, there's nothing much that a game developer can do to improve the visual experience.

I wish that was the case too mate.

Just imagine how great a Wii would have been if it had decent hardware?
Not only would we have had Mario Galaxy and Zelda, but we'd have had Call of Duty 4 and Grand Theft Auto 4 too.

Still, there's nothing we can do about it now.
On a positive note we've had Mario and Zelda this generation already and with no decent Nintendo Franchises on the horizon now is a good time to sell it and upgrade.

I think that's a great idea! I have so many unfinished games. Between working all day, ignoring my responsibilities and masturbating, I hardly have time to figure out exactly where that enchanted golden orb that I need to progress any further is hiding. I know it's around here somewhere. So, I like that feature a lot.

No-one really buys the wii to play multi-plats anyway. We're looking for ground up versions of the games like SSX and Pro Evo which were awesome or exclusives like Mad World and Tenchu.

In all fairness, I think Wii should've gotten Dragon Quest instead of DS =P

Exactally my friend. If something is built from the ground up for the Wii (usually by Nintendo) then it can work. But when they do this... It's just more crap which shouldn't be done.

It's more about hardware, and the Wiimote does that, it's the 2x gamecube mentality which Nintendo decided upon that hurts the Wii.

It's about pushing the boundaries of what is available at the time.

The Wiimote is new, the Wii is not. But Nintendo is making a crap load of cash so hopefully the next Wii will have both.
