Does Gaming's Future Depend on Wii Fit?

1Up writes: When legendary Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto introduced Wii Fit at last year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, you could almost hear the collective clatter of a million gamers furiously pounding out epitaphs to their favorite hobby. Here was the inventor of Mario and Zelda completely ignoring his brilliant work in progress, Super Mario Galaxy, in order to talk about what appeared to be a glorified bathroom scale. Wii Fit, hardcore gamers proclaimed, would be the death of videogames.

"As a videogame, the audience looks at a price of $100 and thinks, 'That's very expensive,'" Miyamoto admits. "But for people who are purchasing exercise equipment or fitness DVDs -- in those terms, $100 is actually very cheap." -Miyamoto

I guess this sums up why people are going crazy for them.

Because I'm sure the Wii Fit is every bit as much of a workout as an elliptical.

"It's about setting a goal, finding a path to that goal, and then determining a new objective -- which, in my mind, is very much the same as what you do in a Mario game."

True, but Mario is fun.

I just don't get Wii Sports and Wii Fit.
I suppose I can't comment on Wii Fit as I haven't tried it, but I got a Wii on release day, with Wii Sports. Zelda, unfortunately, didn't turn up until 4 days later.
Man, I was gutted about that. After 30 minutes on Wii Sports I'd had enough.

I get frustrated with it because I just don't get it. I've had mild fun playing Wii Sports with friends, but it's the same type of fun I get playing a boardgame like Pictionary or Trivial Pursuits.
I keep playing because I think: maybe I haven't got to the point of appreciation yet. I keep thinking there must be another mode that I haven't discovered. One that everyone else knows about except me. How come all this people thing the game is sheer brilliance, and I think it's utter rubbish. Basic, simple, admittedly it's novel, but once that novelty wears off you're left with a bare bones experience. One that gets old very quickly.

Wii Sports has certainly never come close to the excitement I've had in a Call of Duty 4 team deathmatch.

The Wii-mote just doesn't work as well as I thought it would. I've not played a single game where you get one-to-one motions. It's always make a swipe then watch the Wii interpret the move.

Can someone explain the appeal of Wii Sports and Wii Fit to me?

Hehe, fine. Wii Sports is a game, easy to play, but when it gets difficult it's quite difficult...these are the types of games that hook people more than Call of Duty 4. Call of Duty 4 is a hard game to play if you're not into games. What's honestly wrong with swiping? I find this part hard to comprehend, because the newer games for the wii are more accurate. It was like when the analog came out, people were complaining about that. If you learn to control your arms and quit flailing it works well. Okami for the wii is so fun compared to the ps2 version it's amazing...it's a much faster game. The dodging is now in the nunchuk, and it can sense all four directions, and during a dodge, you can pull off a bomb or slash in a mere second. For hardcore games when the controls are good they're really good. Wii Sports may not be for you, but the concept of very easy to learn/hard to master keeps people hooked.

Now with wii fit. Miyamoto explained that the goal of wii fit is to make you aware of your health. Being aware of your health is the first step to being fit. The next step in wii fit is they ask you to make a goal for yourself. Making goals is what most people lack when losing weight, they say they will but they don't have an end point. Wii Fit helps people plan their weight loss for them with an encouraging push, and with the difficulty of mastering all the excercises gives that very easy to play/difficult to master type games that Nintendo makes.

Wow, I'm so tempted to talk about Wii Fit. The single most disgusting game related thing I've ever seen. Worse than fanboys, Uwe Boll and Jack Thompson combined.

Ok, I've said it. Nope, that didn't help. Wii Fit still sucks.

Am I the only one who noticed wii fit helped the wii more than GTAIV helped the ps3 and 360 combined?

How has Wii Fit helped the Wii so much? The console was still sold out everywhere before Wii Fit came out. How you supposed to measure impact when the console is still sold out 19 months after release? The only people let down by GTA IV are fanboys that care more about the console sales race than actual games and thought it would be a clear win for their "team".

Wii Fit is in the news because its the only thing the Wii has for the foreseeable future and some little girl got labeled overweight...

GTA IV stomped a mud hole in everything released near it. Its still the best open world game ever created no matter what the haters say.

Because the hardcore gamers are all running out to get Wii Fit. I can honestly say I know little to nothing about it, and I don't care to know anything about it either.
