Nintendo: Wii Gamers Are Hardcore Gamers

Kotaku writes: "While speaking at the Electronic Gaming Summit in San Francisco, newly-appointed Mario marketer Cammie Dunaway maintained that 79 percent of Wii owners are male, older than 18, have an income of $50,000 or more, and half of them game for at least five or more hours per week."

1.1 - The attach rate is very good actually.

Especially considering that so many crap games have come out alongside the good ones on this console, and advertising for 3rd party games is near nonexistent. Even so, in the end, if there were to only be an attach rate of 4 games per console, if the console is in 75 million homes, then developers will still sell alot of software. That is all that really matters. 35 million rabid customers who will buy 8 games each is great, but the former is better. Unless that is, you only care about the superficial type of substance that comes along with things such as massive first day release sales.

There is a huge Wii install base, Almost 30 million people.
Many of them are, in fact, hardcore gamers. Wii is the cheapest console with Easy to afford games (other than of Guitar Hero, Rock Band, and Wii Fit).

Now. You're misinterpreting this. It's not saying Hardcore gamers Play wii most, It's saying most Wii owners are the demographic of what you'd define a hardcore gamer as.

In other words, There IS a market for Hardcore games on Wii. I think the first really mature hxc game to break some numbers will be Mad world =P

As much as we'd like to think so, we're a pretty small base.
Mainstream games are what keep company's alive.
Ps1 and PS2 were VERY mainstream consoles.

At an Affordable price, They had both hardcore and casual games, and everything in between, so the Market for those were wide.

Like Casual games or not, without them, Game companies may not even have the Funds to build these big epic pieces you guys love so much.

I play those games with my kids, and I also pleay Metroid, Zelda, Virtual Console, etc....

Oh and I also play my PC a ton as well as the PS3. If I fit the hardcore gamer label and happen to play the Wii also, does it change me into something else?

I'm more diverse than the labels you'd like to apply, I'd guess there are a lot of people out there just like me.

The attach ratio on Wii is much higher than PS3 and is catching the 360.
software attach ratio
Wii 124m sold 4.83
360 122m sold 6.50
PS3 52m sold 4.19

So even though the 360 has been out for a year longer the Wii has sold more software than it and the PS3 is struggling badly. Less than half of what Wii and 360 has sold. And its attach ratio should be higher than the Wii due to less consoles sold but that isn't the case. So I put it too you that Wii gamers are more hardcore than PS3 owners.

The attach rate NOT including Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wii Fit, Mario & Sonic at the Olympics, Brain Training, Mario Party or any other mini game compilation.

12 - 5 or more hours a week playing a Wii makes you hard core?

What the hell is with that? I game a total of 20 hours a week. How does playing Wii for an hour a day constitute being "hardcore"? This just throws all the statistics they gave into the "We really aren't providing actual facts" category. What happened to them bragging about all those female gamers? Last I heard most of the Wii fanbase is female, does that mean that the amount of sex changes has suddenly skyrocketed with girls from 5-16 years old? Honestly. This seems like utter crap. Why would a male of 18 years or older actually waste their time with the Wii library? I mean there is so much variety with disney childrens games, what is a 24 year old guy to do? Seriously I actually want to see where these statistics are coming from. Hell I actually want to see the survey they were giving out too. What did they do when asking the question "What type of gamer are you?" Did they only allow one answer?
