Playstation 3...for the win?

Sony's Playstation 3 is currently in 3rd place in the mighty console wars. With such a slow start the PS3 was the undesired machine for your average gamer. With missing features and less-than-satisfactory games, the future wasn't looking very bright. The Playstation 2 reigned supreme last generation, and it was clear Sony was expecting double the sales with only half the effort.

But come 2008 the Playstation 3 is now leading its hardcore competitor; Microsoft's Xbox 360, and slowing gaining on Nintendo's always out of stock Wii. Proven franchises and new IP's are on the way, and those missing featuring are slowly but surely being implemented. Things are quickly turning around for Sony's console and by the looks of it they're only going to get better. I lost an optical drive in my first one - an 80GB. Luckily I have a 40GB to replace it until the new 80GB's come in... and in my investigation it doesn't look like BD-ROM failures are common (at least at this stage), so I'm not too worried.

On topic, I actually believe that Sony might actually charge for Home. Whether it's a flat sale fee or a monthly charge, I think it will happen. I know they are planning on making a quick buck off of microtransactions,but I don't think that will be enough to cut even.

That's actually okay with me though. As long as I can play online for free with the basic PSN, i'm just fine.

Home is actually built with advertising in mind. It'll be free no doubt, but there would be ads everywhere. Not that it's a bad thing. I think the layout is well balanced.

I'm looking forward to Home just as much as anyone else who is, but I seriously think it will come at some sort of price other than microtransactions.

In the end though, it doesn't matter to the people who don't even care about Home, considering basic use of the PSN is and always should be free.

The PS3's heavy hitter game titles have yet to be released and that's a big deal because that means that there's a lot more to come from the Playstation 3.

Gran Turismo 5, God of War 3, Killzone 2, and Final Fantasy XIII are just a few of the PS3's biggest exclusives for 2009 and each of them are potential System Sellers.

And just think what will happen to PS3 sales once Sony discontinues the PS2 in 1-2 more years. The large majority of that 100+ million PS2 user base will be upgrading to PS3's.

According to Sony, the PS3 has already outsold the Xbox 360 in Europe with not one single highly anticipated exclusive game title, just image what will happen to PS3 sales once Sony starts dropping the big ones.

Personally I expect the PS3 to outsell the Xbox 360 eventually considering larger Playstation install base and long list of highly anticipated Exclusive game titles.

The PS3 will be around even when the PS4 is released and isn't going anywhere anytime soon. The 10 year lifecycle that Sony implements in it's game consoles is something that Microsoft and Nintendo should take into account in the next generation of consoles.

A good percentage of market share is what they have lost. I will be surprised if Sony sells more PS3s than Microsoft does 360s. I'm not often surprised.

Montrealien, I am not insinuating that the PS3 should rule with an iron fist but I am sick and tired of MS talking crap about games being delayed when the only game that's been delayed is Killzone too because of a couple of issues. They constantly talk crap and they're getting too arrogant for their own good.

I bought my PS3 to play games, and I know we're going to see games this year.

That's the beauty of our industry juuken, games will be everywhere...

I know you where hurt by MS, but sony has been the most arrogant of the bunch in the last 10 years, they get humbled one year and all of a sudden they are the angels in the outfield? To me it makes no sense. I was defending the likes of Sega and Nintendo in the 90's when Sony came into the industry, guess who was the big corporation aiming the mainstream casual market back then? But now they are the console of choice for the so called hardcore gamer? And I will never forget the fake PR smoke and mirrors they did simply to drown the Dreamcast hype. I'm very happy Microsoft put them back in there place when they tried it against the 360 a few years back. It made sony realize they could not play us no more and have to deliver on their promises now, witch proves that in the end, competition is good, and the tighter the better for us gamers to make sure all console makers are always on the ball to deliver quality products to us.

I bought 2 Ps1's starting with a launch console that broke down in less then a year with absolutely ZERO support from sony, they never even recognized the fact the the lens track got used up real quick, hence the sideways PS1. I've bought 3 ps2, one that lasted me 4 years but then a 2nd slim one that never read any old games, and then used fat one that never read any new games. The 60bg Ps3 was the best playstation I have bought in the last couple of years and it cost me 900$ dollars and was deadweight for a good while, just now it is making sense, 2 years and a 400$ dollars console later. DO I hold a grunge against Sony for all of this, of course not.

All current game makers have had their problems, but to always be one sided gamer supporting one console like it was a sports team is just wrong, and hugely biased. Maybe you don't want them to rule the industry with an iron fist, but a majority of the agree you get and plus bubble you get are from people that would love nothing more.

I don't get bubbles and agrees for the sake of people wanting the PS3 to dominate with an iron fist. I get them because I am reasonable on both fronts. If the 360 was actually reliable and I could buy it without worrying about something going wrong with it, then I would have bought that over a PS3 since I became a huge fan of Ninja Gaiden through Sigma. But until MS can prove their console failure rate is lower than before, I won't take the chance.

I am not biased against the 360 but MS needs to stop fooling people. It's true that Sony has been arrogant as well but just because one company pulls the arrogance card, doesn't mean another should do the same thing.

I don't see much of Sony's arrogance these days, do I?

Original launch date was oct 07

MGS4 and Home both had launch windows that got pushed back, but you are right, they never got a concrete launch date. And yes, Haze was delayed and sony approached them to make this game an exclusive.

As a retailer I can tell you with assurance that the 360`s failure rate has had a steady decline from my perspective,``witch is one of Montreal busier gaming stores.`` And that fact alone that MS recognized it **cked up is huge and the few customers I have dealt with for the RRoD is the past couple of months dealt with MS directly without any problems and it was quick. Sony never recognized their past issues and I never held it against them, I understood, even though it did piss me off.

The Irony is that the minute they get back on top and arrogant, will you pull a hypocrite card and root for them like they where a sports team still? Arrogance on either side is not the best thing in the world, however when you are on top you can throw a few pot shots to your competitors, it seems to be the way it works these days, what you have to do as a gamer is not let these little things get to you. Take example from me, I never let what little things fanboy/fangirls say get to me...uh wait..

good article...but it does the same thing all these 'the king is back' articles do...

Where the 'ps3 sucks' mentality came from is beyond me...Sony had a PR disaster in 2006...yes...but the system delivered on a lot of what was originally promised...namely, Blu Ray and an unmatched multimedia device...Sony publically stated in numerous reports that the system would ship somewhat featureless, but within months would be recieving a brunt of stuff promised through firmware updates...

all of which it did...fanboy away all you want...but the PS3 kicks the utter shat out of every other console to date in terms of media functionality...its the closest thing to an all in one home theatre box ever concieved, and does a whole bunch of stuff better than dedicated components...at launch you could buy a 60gig PS3, a HDTV, and a sound system...and play every single CD sized round disc ever made, save for HD-DVD...thats one hell of an accomplishment...not to mention it has excellent online connectivity, in terms of having a web browser, wake-on LAN support, and all the remote play features that came just in time for the PS3's European launch...

the PS3's launch was just a matter of kicking it while it was down...Sony dropped the ball with some features, of which are still being corrected...but any true video game hobbyist new Sony would turn things around...and people keep saying its launch was so terrible...it wasn't even Sony's worst launch...it sold faster in Europe than any Playstation device yet concieved...it outsold its main rival for all of 2007 overall, despite every blogger and his dentist kicking sand at it...

These articles are a dime a dozen...all the guys that last year basically condemned SCE, are now darting around all surprised that just maybe Sony will come back and do what they have already done...twice...its been said a lot, but its worth mentioning again...Tell us, when exactly has Sony not come out on top with one of their video game consoles...and even more importantly, what was the margin of their domination?...'

I am not angry at the PS3's initial reception...I am just surprised that so many people are surprised that its aboard the Comeback Express...if that makes any sense...

What is it coming back from? Started in last place, still in last place. Nowhere for it to come back from. A "come back" implies the PS3 is coming back to a certain point. Well the Ps3 never achieved anything but 3rd place so far so its not coming back from anything.

VoiceofPoorreasoning, why do you constantly underestimate Sony? It's been outselling the 360 for months. MGS4 is set to be so huge that bundles are sold out already. I just saw an advertisement at Gamestop for the game already.

uh...I doubt it man...Wii Fit is coming...and the Wii outsold the 360 and PS3 COMBINED the month that GTAIV released (over 700k units in NA alone)...

But then consider this aswell

The PS3 will have had a 4 year head start on the 720 by the time it arrive's
And lets estimate at a 40 million install base
Wow thats a helluva lot more than the 10 million head start the 360 had when the PS3 came out

So after this Xbox 720 pile of sh1te has been out for a year it might have sold 10 million but by that time aswell the PS3 will be at 50 million

So its fair to say that the Xbox 720 has a lot of catchin up to do !!

But the fact is that the 720 hasn't got a chance in hell of catching up and overtaking the PS3 in sale's like the PS3 is gonna do with this old gen console of your's the Xbox 3 dollar's 60

And don't forget the PS3 will have another 3 years left in it

And then before you know it The PS4 will arrive and this Xbox 720 your going on about will then indeed be just like the 360 is now !!

And Old Gen,RRODing on your dumb,inbred,hillbillie,sh1tkic king ass, pile of junk

And so the cycle begins again

The Xbox has a head start
The Play Station catch's it up and surpasses it
The next Xbox come's out
The next Xbox is not capable of catchin up the Playstation
And then the new Playstation come's out

10 - Screw that!?!

I get what people are saying about a 1 console future & how its all bad but I really believe that xbox 360 was in Sony's way holding next gen gaming back.
The ps2 had all the developers working on a dvd game & most of them had perfected their craft on it. Microsoft thought next gen gaming would be on dvd & looked for devs to bring out their games on a stronger system. When it is obvious Now that the playstation 3 really meant Next -gen gaming with its hardrive & blu-ray & sisaxis motion technology.
Microsoft just rushed it to get some showtime in & in all its time there has only been about 5 games that are worth playing on that system, But its limited & with the exception of gears I have played all those games before on a PS2 with less graphics.
This generation Nintendo is for kids & casuals, Xbox 360 is for pre-teens as the ps3 has more of a more mature audience that is really the Hardcore Gamer.
We have all been waiting on playstation 3 & everyone will get one of course. I truly believe that if xbox 360 wasnt in the way with a affordable console with dated technology & games that are evidently deeply rooted from the pc that Sony would have already had developers hard at work mastering their blu-ray techniques. Instead, It made more sense to make a fast dollar working with the xbox 360 & then going back to sony to try to understand the hardware.
Yesterday, developers put out multi-platform games & most were better running on the xbox. But, These devs that worked on multi-platforms have had their eyes wide open with the ps3 & now thats all any good developer wants to work on.
Today, Sony is the premiere console to put out your masterpiece of a game! Xbox is great for small developers to get their idea out & maybe make enough money to make a Sony game. The nintendo wii is where developers can make some money to if they cleverly use they systems capabilities.
Overall there is only 1 system the Breaks & Micro Charges your credit card for every little thing. Its the only system that that doesnt have a full funtional controller(D-PAD) & If business goes bad, they might just cut & run like the original Xbox. The Miccrosoft company is really the only company that goes out of its way to bash the ps3 & the wii. They are the only sytem that has non-stop add-ons that are overpriced. This generation they discontinued HD-DVD, has had the force feed back wheel recalled for being a fire hazard & creates more consoles that are unreliable & will never last 3 years.
So, My point is people wont stand by it for long once sony gets it going like the in the past.
The ps3 is surprisingly a marvel of everyting I ever wanted in a console but I will give respect to xbox live because there are some of its features that I want on my ps3 & I am getting in the near future all paid for by Sony with no interference from me because i get it for FREE!
Xbox 360 it was nice to know you but my true love has come back for me & well you are pretty much wasted, so I gotta go!

It's really simple.
Sony said the next gen console starts when they say so and it looks like Sony isn't playing anymore 2008 and 2009 are PS3 Years.
360 is the now PS3 is the future!

umMMMmMMm xBOX 360?? PS3 is destroying it every month in sales....Xbox 360 cant even win in America anymore (ofcourse it can't...Playastaiton is the better brand) and wait until PS3 is actually a low priced selling console at about 300$. Soon enough this will be over.
