Shane Kim: First to 100 Million Wins

GameLife's Chris Kohler interviews Microsoft's Shane Kim.

Chris writes: "I've interviewed Shane Kim, corporate vice president of Microsoft and head of the company's internal games studios, three times in the past year, and it's always an enjoyable experience.

Kim pretty much knows by this point that I'm going to bring up all of the hot-topic news stories about Xbox that I can cram in to my allotted time -- this time, it was the PlayStation 3's sales in Europe, the continued rumors of a Wiimote clone for 360, and developers' complaints about Xbox Live Arcade -- and he answers them well, defending the company while simultaneously attempting to fill in the blanks with some solid information."

Lol, I was kind of thinking that... At this rate it's going to take another 10+ years to even reach that mark. Will the 360 still even be on the shelf in 10 years? Granted a majority of a consoles sales come from the $100-200 price mark it's going to be quite some time before any console hits 100 million. Probably not 10 years but I think even saying 6 might be pushing it... Besides. Since when has 100 million declared the winner? I think any console that can sell well and eventually flip a profit for the manufacture is surely a winner, is it not? The only loser is a manufacturer who sells so little that they bail on consoles altogether... ;)

1.2 - Everybody should read the article before posting as the title deliberately misleads
Wired writes:

Kim says you can't really call it until "somebody's well on their way to reaching 100 million units."

"This is only the third year of our existence and only the second year of Sony and Nintendo's existence. Are we just amusing ourselves by trying to declare a winner and loser while the customers are still out there deciding?" he says.

EDIT: And later he states

"Will (Nintendo) get to expand beyond 35, 40 million to 100 million? Will anybody? I mean, that's going to be an interesting thing to see: Will there be a clear-cut winner like there has been in the last two generations?"

END EDIT.

Now personally, I think that's a pretty reasonable statement.

@Rice - You're right mate if that was the case. What if the 150million consoles we saw last gen duplicates itself this gen and yet nobody gets the required 66% or 100m?

x360 is now the least selling console in the world. x360 is selling justr as good as the old xbox

wii is selling better than GC.Do you honestly believe that x360 could sell more than 30m in its lifetime considering sales which are flat in Japan and europe and a PROBABLE scenario after MGS4's launch

With this rate M$ is going.. it is going to take them over 10 years for them to reach 100 mil..:)

over two years already they barely reach 20 mil...:) I guess xbox users need to stick with DVD-ROM for another 8 years.. and game needs to fit on 7gb disk..

360 to sell 100 million lol, right that a good one. i say it before and ill say it aging, the only people buying up the 360 are the same people that had a xbox to start with. the only place the 360 is selling well is in American that it, that poof to me that only xbox people are buying 360. the 360 been out what 3 year? and only sold what 18 million or 360?, ps3 been out 2 year and already are only 5 million away form the 360 number lol now that sad.

The only console that will reach 100 millions is the PS3, why because Sony will keep selling them well after the PS4 is here. Is the truth we have seen it time and time again with the PS1 and PS2 which is the greatest console of all time will sell more than 150 million in his lifetime, What is there to disagree with I don’t count the DS or PSP as consoles.
Why so many disagrees is the truth Sony will keep the Ps3 alive well after the PS4 is here and will reach more than 100 million just like his predecessors did.

17 - I think
it is the first to $149.00 USD and the equivalent in other countries. That is the pricepoint for mass consumption, before that it is all a month to month race. Worldwide Sony is winning, and probably will continue to win until the Xbox gets to cheap to ignore anymore

By that time we will see an exit from gaming hardware or a new console from Microsoft, more than likely the latter but you never know.

wake up from your dreams

Those PS2 owners havent made the switch and with MGS4 around the corner they would be obviously picking up the PS3. Brand preferences havent changed this.

Wii is being bought largely by senior citizens and kids

x360 is already at 149 pound/euro in europe and it is the least selling console there

do you honestly believe that after seeing PS3's lineup for 2008 and beyond a PS2 owner would purchase an x360 over PS3.

Mass effect and Bioshock are coming to PS3 if u are unaware since publishers make most money from PS3 . SW in europe overhshadows SW sales in europe and only PS3 sells in europe besides a wii

360 is the best game console this generation, it has the ps3 beat in EVERYTHING regarding gaming. Bigger library, better game performance, better online, better price, more variety etc. If the ps3 outsells the 360 this generation it certainly won't be because of it's gaming capabilities. It has a better chance of it being because of idiots like you and every other braindead sony fanboy that feel like they somehow belong in this 360 story.

i doubt that it will sell 120+ million, but ps3 sales will pick up because of blu-ray and many people will pick one up as an entertainment media center/video game console once they buy hdtvs.

The Playstation 3 is the console that has the most potential for reaching 100 million units because both the PS1 sold over 100 million units and the PS2 sold over 120 million units and still selling.

The Wii has a lot of potential for reaching 100 million units too because it's so cheap and the extensive use of motion sensing in games and because it's already at 24 million sold worldwide in under 2 years, however, neither Microsoft or Nintendo have been known for supporting a older console after a newer console is released. The Playstation 3 is the only system that I can actually see still on shelves 7-8 years from now because it's future proof.

At the rate that the Wii is selling right now it will probably be the first to reach 100 million, but PS3 sales will be picking up because of all of the upcoming highly anticipated game titles that have yet to be released, and PS3 sales will really start to pick up once Sony discontinues the Playstation 2 in about 1-2 years.

The total success of the 360 will depend on how long Microsoft keeps it on the market and I think that it will be on the market for about 3 or 4 more years tops, but the PS3 has at least 7 or 8 more years left before Sony will discontinue it because of it's 10 year lifecycle, and that translates to more total sales than the Xbox 360.

As far as I'm concerned, the PS3 will still be on the market when the Xbox 720 ( or whatever it will be called)and PS4 is released and the PS3 will be still selling... I seriously doubt the 360 will be around that long to continue selling against the PS3.

I think that Microsoft is a little too ambitious for a 100 million console unit sale on the Xbox 360 though... The Original Xbox didn't make it past 25 million, and there's still more people that own PS2's and have been Playstation gamers than Xbox gamers.

27 - MY problem with the PS3
360 AND PS3 are failures (sales wise) when compared to the PS2.

The quality OR quantity of the games released so far are way way WAY behind the PS2. I mean where in the blue hell are my PS3 rpgs???

Grandia?
Final Fantasy?
Xeno anything?
Suikoden?
Breath of Fire?
.hack games?
Phantasy Star?
Legend of Dragoon?
Dragon Quest?
Legend of Lagia
Legend of anything?

I am completely upset that i have had a PS3 since 2006 and i have ZERO rpgs to play on my console.

RPGs and Metal gear games are what made me a playstation fan to begin with. Im pretty sure alot of you are going to reply with wait for FF13. As u can see from my list above theres more then FF13. And what the hell happened to White Knight?

Hopefully this RPG problem will be put straight in 2009 or somethin. I dont see the PS3 passing 100 million without RPGs because. THATS what happened to playstation Japan. Sony fans were not for the FPS.
I believe there were only a couple on PS2. With a SH** load of rpgs back then.
