When will the Wii receive the credit it's due?

Since its release in late 2006 the Wii has dominated sales worldwide with its 'pick up and play' approach to gaming. However, also since release, the Wii has been ripped into as a 'gimmick' or a 'toy' by Sony and Microsoft fanboys. Despite its huge success and range of serious games they still persist it is a 'gimmick' and that it will wear off. But at what point will credit be given to the Wii that it is a serious competitor in the market?

when they make a game that isn't mario/zelda paper something game, or a game that isn't bowling or a derivitave of it. also when they can make games that don't make the wii look like a ps2 with a remote for a controller. we are spoiled and greedy we want graphics, sound, story, gameplay, multiplayer (not necessarily in that order) to be top notch in a game. the wii hasn't delivered on even one of those. oh and guess what, we want more than 1 game that falls into those catagories. very few wii games have even tried any of that and failed miserably (red steel anyone?)

A decent systme like the gamecube it is one of nintendo's biggest failures because the hardcore turned their back on the system. Nintendo has the most marketshare and the highest demand of the next-gen systems. Congratulations.

I don't like the Wii. But this can't be anything but wonderful for all of us, because now video games are MAINSTREAM and EVERYONE plays them.

The Wii is a gateway console to the world of gaming for the new people. Once people get sick of Wii Sports and Mario/Sonic Olympics (which they inevitably will, considering its lack of lasting power), they'll move onto Zelda and Mario and Metroid and No More Heroes and Smash Bros. Then when they get sick of THOSE games, they'll thirst more and opt for one of the hardcore systems.

The Wii is to gaming consoles as World of Warcraft was to MMORPG's. It broke the gates open to the mass market. Before WoW came out, it was considered a success to have more than five hundred thousand subscribers. Now anywhere over a million is considered a success, dimly in comparison to Warcraft's 9 million active subscriber base.

Maybe we should look at how much console sales have increased ON A WHOLE compared to last generation, and see the impact it's having on our industry. That's a much more important stat than which company's selling the most.

Only because we're doing so well do we even have the luxury to quarrel amongst ourselves.

Absolutely ture, its the same old argument everytime just look at the first reply. Why knock nintendo for delivering good sequels to games that people want? Thats what good companies do(square, sony, bungie, and so on) people are so quick to be up nintendos @SS for making sequels but thats what the industry does.

Yes Ill agree someitmes they come up with an idea and tack on thier mascots in games that could be a brand new ip. Though a lot of times thats what poeple want anyway.

As far as the article it was ok. My main problem is that he adds Mario and Sonic Olympics which is not a deep game. There were plenty of other games for him to mention besides that game.

The wiis never really going to get credit though most people remark that its neat or interesting but then their main play time is multiplayer which are not always the deepest games. So they come off with the opinion that its not really worth their time.

Though eventually if sales keep going this way and the price comes down more, and more developers will deliver rich deep games. It just seems crazy how people just expect these games to just come out. Theres potential yes, but developers are still playing around and seeing what can be done, as more serious developers geta grip on what they can do then better games will come. Besides its not like all the games out for ps3 are using it to all of its potential.

What it all comes down to is fans of particular systems any system which will pcik any argument to attack any system that they want to. The arguments are the only thing that change each generation not the retardation that occurs in fanboys(for any system).

If you could somehow prove to me that, all those millions of wii owners educated themselves about all 3 consoles and decided the wii offered what they wanted, (instead of just blindly going in without really knowing what they were buying, because everyone else has one and everyone else is doing it) then I would give credit to the wii.

See thats just crazy talk, I guarentee you that a vast majority of the 120million ps2 owners knew next to nothing on the GC or xbox before making their purchasing decision. The mainstream market are sheeps that follow trends. The mainstream(especially madden nation) went with ps2 last gen because it was the hip system. Besides when has the vast majority of consumers made educated buys when concerning technology? They go with established brands and whats in at the moment. Do they know the competition for the most part? No but if they see a good deal or they hear a lot about a product in particular then they tend to go for that item. That is the wii this gen and the ps2 last gen.

exactly look at the ipod, slick marketing and buzz. Not that the ipod is terrible but almost no one gives any other mp3 player a chance. Just bugs me when someones like blah blahb lah uneducated poeple who buy the wii thats mass makert sorry to tell you. They dont tend to care about other options just what is the big thing at the moment. Which is part of the success of the ps2 got its name out there and was the big buzz system which is part of the reason why it acheived such high sales.

I believe that in the back of every gamer's minds, even the most die hard fanboys, they believe that the Wii is a serious competitor. Anyways, having a ton of fun with Super Mario Galaxy which I just picked up yesterday. Nice change of pace to all the carjacking and killing that I've been doing in GTAIV. It is incredibly pretty and puts to shame all those crappy Wii games. Also, I think the real question Wii owners should ask is not when fanboys will give the Wii its due but rather when will publishers give the Wii its due.

Im not sure how people could disagree with that except that you said in the back of their minds they know its competition. I dont see how anyone couldnt see it as competition. It takes developers and publishers funds away from other systems thats pretty much means its compeition even if they want to claim that only casuals buy the wii. THough I agree with your last part because there will be a time when developers and publishers will look at the install base and not be able to withstand the desire for a piece of the pie.

I for one think if sales keep going then the wii can acheive the same success that the ps2 did in reference to the install base being so large that nitch games and generes could be released for the system with moderate success and still earn money.

i was going to disagree, but though before i wrote and came away with this. the wii does get credit, although alot of it is sarcastically. but no one can deny nintendo's great come back to revelence. the wii is what it is, and doesn't pretend(mostly)to be selling the same product the other systems are. i dont have a wii but thought about it for the turbo grafx games. but so far that isn't enough for me. what i think will happen is i'll get it for my daughter who is turning 4 in july. she should love it. thats probably the right group of persons who play it anyway.

Funky Town TX has it right. Nintendo had a chance to bring millions of new gamers on board with an affordable system that provided tremendous fun factor. At the start of the Revolutions PR campaign their mission was to bring the system out so that parents, kids, grandparents and metrosexuals could all play together in harmony.

When they launched with a $250 price point they might as well given gamers a middle finger along with the Wiimote as they stuck it to consumers big time. That, and intentionally short shipping product to create a faux demand has made them look like money-grubbing a-holes to most hard core gamers and I have to agree with that.

There are four families in my neighborhood who are upset to have waited in line to purchase a Wii and pay through the nose for accessories only to have it in a closet or unused under the couch in the living room. Do you think these families will ever invest in another game system again? Nintendo should be ashamed of their PR tactics and can be bundled with EA as a company hell bent on destroying the games business for future generations.

The credit they should get is for setting the groundwork for the next video game crash.

7 - I've always given the Wii the credit it's due
as one of the biggest examples of a "pet rock" in the last 20 years. It's an overclocked Gamecube with loads of shovelware and it still sells like mad. Their PR/Advertising department has done an excellent job in taking peoples money w/o rendering a real service. I'm one of the few who haven't spent twice what the system is worth on one and I'm thankful. I have escaped their apparent mind melting ray gun device. Phew!

The Wii isn't a bad system and certainly has it's credit. I refuse to acknowledge some of it's games though as a core gamer. Nintendo needs new IPs not gaming fallbacks like Mario, Zelda and the lot. Both Sony and Microsoft are consistently releasing new IPs. Nintendo? None.

I held on to mine for 6 or 7 months and after renting numerous games and buying a couple I sold it.

The only thing That excited me about it was wii boxing with my neighbors when we had been drinking and he blue light that glowed telling me something had happened - outside of that I actually found it to be a very boring system.

Love to hate, yes they do, the wii is an excellent system, it has a long line up of really good games, thing is, 360ers and ps3ers just want to downplay it, I lol'd like mad when Mario Galaxy was the game of the year for 2007, the toy machine taking on the big hardcore HD machines LOL. So there, the wii doesn't have games eh? In that list I covered everything from Fighting Games, Racing games, Adventure games, Action games, FPS, On-rails FPS, Online-FPS, RPG, Puzzle games, etc, and I didn't even mention Downloadble games, such as Wiiware and Virtual console.

If someone tells you the wii lacks games, copy-paste that list and slap them in the face. In fact, the wii's line up is the one I like the most personally, just because of killers as Zelda, Mario, Smash, Mario Kart, No more heroes and Guilty Gear etc. Can't get any of those on 360 or PS3 (well guilty gear for PS2 on PS3, but wii version supports 480p)

12.7 - There is plenty of 3rd party variety
found on M$ and Sony systems that just aren't found on the Wii. There are few franchises as old and played as Mario. There are plenty of game journalists who echo my sentiment.

The Wii is selling on hype, not software or hardware, hype.

It is about $150 too expensive for what it offers, and that isn't much.

The Wii is the 1st Nintendo console I've never owned. (I've played it enough to forumulate my opinion) So you can back off of the typical ridiculous Nintendo defense comments.

I've still got mine, but its REALLY dusty now and its really only Mario Galaxey that made me gald I bought it. I've tried loads of titles, but they simply don't appeal to me and seem incredibly shallow and weak.

I give Nintendo huge credit for making a fortune and catering to an audience that didn't know they could have fun with games and surely thats all the credit they can expect?

If they manage to get a lot more games out that I find trully excellent , then maybe my view will change. But when I think back the games that have really moved my soul and excited and entertained me over the last 18 months, thay are all on PS3 and 360. When Nintendo can give me the same level of immersion and involvement, they'll have cracked it. But of course, they are not trying to entertain me, and people like me, and I applaud them for serving their market with what it wants.

i think nintendo here really did some "thinking outside the box" when deciding to release the wii. they re on a whole different league in the console race....ps3 and 360 are not their competitors ...theyre the only ones targeting this niche market of kids and casuals while sony and ms are left fighting for the increasingly dense hardcore market. personally , i dont see myself buying a wii but i hope that in the next gen, nintendo could use the money they made on the wii and release a graphically astounding macine.

-Guild Hall still in place (Friend codes won't be used heavily)
-The game controls can be changed or variations of controls can be used.
-They won't gimp us on monsters.

How right you are. The HD crowd will always downplay the Wii as"not in competition" or a kiddies console. But alot of hardcore gamers own it as I do. I have been playing games since the Atari 2600 years and am very happy with my purchase. Its funny, if the Wii was last in this battle with the HD consoles then the fanboys would be saying something like this. "We knew the Wii couldn't compete with our consoles." But as it is thumping them then it isn't in competition with them.LOL.

When it Actuality is REALLY is in terms of sales, They just refuse to accept it, or suggest it doesn't count.

i downplay wii not because of graphics but because its expensive (yes expensive considering that it is) and has ZERO games that intrest me.

Stick your Mario and Zelda up your bottom we tired of his milking

Also playing with motion sensor is fun for like 5 hours but then its downright BORING and ANNOYING

Ya moving those analog stick and buttons on a gamepad was SO FUN for five hours but then not anymore - IMO A controller doesn't have to be fun 24/7. An example of this is when you are using fps controls on wii it is obviously superior to a gamepad's controls but you don't have to have always have fun moving the controller to know that...
