Sales Tracking Accuracy: Famitsu vs. Media Create (W/E May 11th)

How accurate are sales trackers? The answer is not really very easy to determine, since there are rarely any standards to benchmark against. NPD has a monopoly in the US, so the only comparison can be made with manufacturer sales to retail and a ballpark estimate of retail stock. Chart-Track and GfK typically have local monopolies in Europe, and rarely release public sales figures besides. Japan, however, has a unique situation, with two professional sales trackers releasing weekly sales figures to the public. Both Famitsu (Enterbrain) and Media Create cover about 2/3 of the market, so how much can that remaining 1/3 affect the accuracy of the figures? Let's take a look at the latest week of sales data to get an idea.

First, a look at the hardware sales data from each tracker:

Type....Famitsu.....Media Cr......% Diff
PSP.........73k..........90k.............21%
Wii...........71k..........67k..............6%
DSL.........48K..........51k..............6%
PS3.........8.5k...........8k..............6%
PS2...........8k.........7.5k..............6%
360.........1.7k.........1.3k.............27%

What do we see here? Well, what stands out the most is the large 21% difference in PSP sales between the two trackers. Combined with the 6% difference in Wii sales, look at how the sales narrative changes. While this piece isn't meant to compare VGC numbers, as a side note the VGC values for each piece of hardware and software listed were somewhere in between the Famitsu and Media Create numbers.

Isn't that a way for VGchartz to clean themselves from "biased" charges?
"Oh look, Famitsu and NPD numbers are not really exact, they do mistakes!"

I don't think Chart Track or GfK publish official numbers that much, sometimes the guys at NeoGaf come up with some numbers that are from chart-track or GfK.

Usually Chart-track and GfK do publish like this game came #1, this game #2, etc. But not with the assoicated sales #.

1.1 @Sonars...

I don't think it's lack of trying, I don't think VGChartz has access or the kind of access of proffessional agencies. Just like proffessional Agencies like NPD, don't have access to Walmart, which is a big mover of games/consoles (As walmart won't share their data with 3rd parties, etc.). Does that mean NPD isn't trying either?

You can't fully trsut npd numbers, i just like to know what their # represents when it comes to market share...As we know Famitus and media create represent about 2/3rd of the market, so 66%... I wonder what NPD is...

Cyrus365 aka ioi(the little kid who made the vgchartz site)

Get your pathetic damage control spam for your joke of a site out of here.

Whenever you site vgchartz SPAM trying to get people to give the site hits with another fantasyland set of 'numbers' or 'sales anaylysis' garbage just remember it is nothing more than this little kid:

http://www.vgchartz.com/ava...

sitting at his mom's house in front of his computer typing random/made up numbers into his computer desperately trying to inflate sales of his beloved 360.

What is so pathetic about vgchartz is it could have easily been a decent repository of public sales numbers and not the sad joke that gamers of all platforms think of it.

Once vgchartz was unable to keep inflating 360 sales in the 'mysterious' Other regions, the little kid started trying to discredit NPD so he could provide cover for his own made up US sales numbers. And now he is even going after the Japanese sales tracking companies.

Absolutely pathetic. ioi get a life.

2 - i do inventory for Hospitals. Across the counrty
and 3% is a acceptable difference.

i would like to think you could add 3-5% to NDP numbers and get a real close number. Im betting those numbers NPD comes up with are more then that off. Probaly 10-15% just because they dont count everyhting. Might even be 20-30%
