Sonys window of oppurtunity is closing fast

Since its release it is been clear that the Wii is currently the favourite console, surpassing the Xbox 360 in sales and gathering the biggest video game library of the three major consoles. However the Wiis sales are only at 25 million and many of the 100 million Playstation gamers are still on Playstation 2s and haven't upgraded yet, this means we may be on the brink of a rapid expansion of the ever increasing PS3 sales.

I think Wii never was part of the console war. It just stood out from the crowd and said hey you two can fight over the second place. As for PS3 and 360, well I do believe PS3 was hurt more from Wii success than 360. Because in one xbox was and still is considered a hardcore machine, while Playstation is a brand for almost every genre. From shooters to platformers. In my opinion PS3 will outlast Wii and 360 interms of number of years it stays in the market.

Yeah they speak loads about how bad Sony is doing right now.. Old rehash IP's that managed very little in sales when compared to GTA and GT on PS2. Notice how PS3 still managed to get a 3rd place finish in a month where 2 of the biggest selling Sony affiliated games went on sale. Not sure why you think Killzone is so big when the first one bombed.Resistance? Another FPS on PS3? IS that really all the console is good for? Seriously Haze, Resistance, Timeshift, Killzone, Cod4, resistance 2, UT3. So the PS3 offers tons of FPS, tons of rehashes, and the least amount of exclusives.. Now how exactly is that a good thing?

Killzone 2 is big because its the new benchmark for FPS in the graphical area. Resistance offers an upgrade of multiplayer player limits. Those two arent rehashes in that sense. A rehash would be Ninja Gaiden to Ninja Gaiden Black. All the sequels from PS3 have made jumps with a mixture of graphics and gameplay from the previous. The importance of FPS for the PS3 was to steal market share from Xbox360's while MS has aimed for JRPGs influence. MGS4 is the prime example of evolution within the Playstation community.

In defense to GTprologue, the statistics does not count for online downloads and beat Forza in sales for the first two months. GTA4 was multiplatform where Xbox360 already had an upper hand in install base.

maybe it could be the big price tag, isn't a ps3 like $500-$600+$60 games? the wii is far cheaper, but still hard to find. i remember when they both lunched and a couple of weeks latter they had lots of ps3's but the wii's were all sold out.

all places where i have been are still sold out of wiis,(you have to order them, and make them hold it)but have ps3's.
i'm sure when some good ps3 games come out, the sales will go up.

i think a lot of people bought it for the motion control stuff. i bought mine for smash bros. and other games too. i guess the casual gamers ate it up. wii sports gets way boring after a while along other wii stuffs too.

when the wii launched it had little to no games that were good, as did the ps3, but the ps3 did had some titles out there, all the wii really had was wii sports

also the sites points were short, and had no sources,graphs or anything, just a "hey those families bought a wii instead of a ps3" ...so....yeah.

Nintendo has Mario, Luigi's Island, Zelda, Mario Party (which I do like), Mario Kart, Smash Brothers which was overrated with the same gameplay on gamecube, nothing new. At least mario party gets all the drunks together and have fun. MS actually had a good run on original IPs but their exclusive list has been the weakest. Of course this is my opinion and Two Worlds was horendous.

Actually, there are closer to 150 million than 50 million PS2 owners. Only about 13 million + 19 million + 25 million PS3s, 360's, and Wii's (respectively) have been sold, totalling about 57 million. Approximately 1/3rd of the total number of PS2 owners have purchased one of the three new systems.

And how many of those sales are from people who never owned a PS2, and either just bought a Wii as their entry into videogaming (like tons of retirement communities, young kids, older folks, and other new gamers who saw the Wii as a fun entry point into the industry), or who were owners of the Xbox or Gamecube last generation (my brother was a Gamecube & Xbox owner, never owned a PS2, and he now owns an Xbox 360, a lot of my friends were Xbox owners, now Xbox 360 owners). And how many of the PS2 owners have bought all 3 or 2 of the systems, like myself? Those of us who have bought more than one of the new systems also are evidence that the number of previous console-generation owners who have upgraded to a new platform is pretty small.

There are still a megaton of PS2 owners who have yet to choose a new videogame system.

Your numbers are WAY off. It's more like 120 million. And while that sounds good you also have to take into account the 100% failure rate of the console for the first 2-3 years I think. I had a launch PS2 up until I got my PS3 w/ BC, then I sold my PS2. It still worked.

100% fail rate = BS.

Sure, it was probably pretty high, but not 100%.

I don't know a single person who ever bought more than one PS2. I have tons of friends who had or have one (obviously, doesn't everybody know a lot of people with a PS2?), and most of them either bought a PS2 fat and stuck with it (some of theirs broke, but they didn't buy another), and a lot of others never bought one til the Slim was out.

Also, my NUMBERS are not way off. If you want to argue that it's not close to 150 million, then you could say that ONE of my numbers is off. But all of them are not off, because my PS3, 360, and Wii numbers are all the most recent official numbers as stated by their respective manufacturers.

Even if it's not 150 million, 150 is still a lot closer to 120 than 50-60 is, so my numbers are more accurate than the website that's linked in this article.

EDITED: I just noticed a statement from December 31, 2007 where they announced it as 127 million. They've sold a few million more since then, so if you want me to revise my estimate of 150 million, how about we call it 130 million. Would that be more to your liking?

Either way, my NUMBERS are not WAY OFF as you put it. One of my numbers is rather slightly off, I'll concede that.

You can't disagree with my above comment. It's impossible unless you're in the habit of ignoring reality.

I admitted I was wrong. I corrected my estimation to 130, which is accurate. I maintained that the article in question is of poor quality with inaccurate numbers. And it's a fact that 50-60 is farther away from 130 (or even 120 for those of you who prefer that OUTDATED number) than my original 150. 50-60 is between 70 and 80 off. 150 is between 20 and 30 off. So my numbers of 150, which is NOT CORRECT as I have discovered, it still a lot more accurate than the bull crap touted as "news" from the article linked.

So don't go disagreeing with my comment wherein I admitted I was wrong, clarified with a correct number, and defended myself for being more accurate than the article.

Why dont you try taking some reading comprehension lessons. PS2=8 years old. Your PS2 =5 years old. My comment = 100% failure rate for the first 2-3 years.. Nice job not comprehending.. Closing that's funny it's just the beginning if anyone should be worried it's Microsoft.
Wii is for little kids and the 360 is for redneck morons and noobs.
If you want the future get the PS3.
The games speak for itself.
Whoever wrote this is a moron and doesn't even know anything about gaming.
PS2 is still around doing it huge and is still selling and is the most sold console in video game history.
PSP sales are number one around the world.
PS3 has taken over everywhere except the U.S.
This is just beginning.
Sony doesn't need to gamble to sell they just offer variety and technology and that is what makes Sony sell.
Microsoft gambles too much and Nintendo gives you a toy and not a console.
The way I see it and the gaming industry sees it is Microsoft is the now and PS3 is the future.
Evidence is there people you just have to open your eyes and see it.

Not to mention, if all a console does is get its old customers to upgrade to their system they have failed. They need growth to survive, they need ppl who have never owned a PS to buy one.

So its not just about getting those PS2 owners to buy a PS3.

This article never deserved to be published, it is complete and udder bs. Last gen consoles catered to 200 million people, as of right now, this gen hasn't sold 50million. As Yoda would say "begun, the console war has".

between GTA IV, MGS 4 and FFXIII the PS2 owners will come around. We're already seeing the swell in PS3 sales.
IT's already happening, patience folks. Ignore the PUTO BOts, they're jealous, angry and still waiting for their 360's to come back from their repairs
