360 to lose majority market share in North America by June?

The Wii has been gaining ground rapidly on the 360 for months now, so the lead change has been not only obvious, but inevitable. The nail in the coffin for the 360's lead will be Miyamoto's latest creation, the Wii Fit. With the launch of what could be the most revolutionary use of the Wii's technology that the industry has seen so far only a few mere weeks away, expect the Wii to take pole position even quicker. When the Wii Fit launched in Europe and Japan(3 and 23 weeks ago, respectively), it spurred an average 33% increase of hardware sold, and it sold through its initial shipments in both regions

1 - This article is unbalanced
To claim that Wii Fit will impact the 360 exclusively and not the PS3 is just silly.

1.1 - Why should it mention the PS3
How is it biased? It doesn't mention the impact on the PS3 because the PS3 already has the worst market share. It impacts the 360 because it is what will push the Wii past the 360 in the US.

@Shadow

I wasn't claiming the article was biased, I was simply stating that a more balanced/comprehensive article would have to consider the impact of WiiFit on all consoles in North America to give a clearer picture of the potential outcome in the marketplace.

I have no doubt WiiFit is going to have a massive impact on both consoles ability to attract more casual consumers.

while thats true, i think the article is more about the wii overpassing the 360, and less about the Wii Fit's overarching effect on the market. i think the summary is a bit misleading in that way.

I don't think MS really cares. They are still rolling in the dough.
I don't think they look at the wii as competition because the target audiences are so different.

i just do not feel like sony and ms are that worried about the wii.

nintendo will do their thang and Ms will do theirs as well.

the kid of experience and games you get on the 360 is not in the same league as the wii and vice versa.

the wii is like the fly that keeps on pestering you but u cant kill it.

If I write an article can someone post it and approve it here too?
What are the qualifications to get something posted here?
Bad news about 360? Oh, I dunno if I can do that, I am a 360 fan, what about good news about the 360? NO! Aw man, nevermind.

"I don't care if the wii have 3 x the installbase of the xbox 360... just like I don't mind that more cars are sold than planes.."

So why do you care if the 360 outsells the PS3 or visa versa?

You lose marketshare when instead of having 40% of the all consoles sold being yours declines to say 35% out of all consoles sold (Making these numbers up). But yes, people dumping the xbox360 as you said would work too ;)

Interesting way to put how much Sony needs to sell to catchup to the 360 in NA. Might just be a long time if at all before MS launches a new box.

This article is an hit counter. A site trying to get hits to up there daily and weekly hits. If the 360, Wii, or the PS3 would lose market share I would only care about this if I owned stock in one of the 3.

8 - I don't think
the wii is really competition for the 360/ps3. they go after different markets.

360/ps3 is for the casual -> hardcore market, the wii is the the casual -> retarded/old people market who get confused by too many buttons.

sure there are some crossovers, but generally I think the wii is a different machine for different uses, not really a console, and certainly not next gen, as it's graphical and computing abilities are far behind that of the next gen consoles.

don't get me wrong, the wii still looks like fun, and it looks as though i'll be getting one for the family next month, which is nice, cause it means everyone will leave my 360 alone for a while:)

im not retarded, old and i can certainly handle myself with a multittude of buttons- and i still get a LOT of enjoyment from my Wii

face it, the Wii is a great console- your just stereotyping it because its aimed at casuals

the Wii's market is previous Nintendo fanboys who love Zelda, Mario etc, casuals who dont want to spend too much on gaming, people who are intrigued by the motion controls, people buying gifts for various family members/friends

8.2 - Using your logic, Boink...
Here's another way to characterize the 360/PS3 and Wii markets:

360/PS3 is for the loser, no girlfriend, pasty-looking couch potato who would rather play video games than hit the beach or make actual, physical friends (not ones they meet online).

Wii is for the person whose life does not revolve around video games, and does not have the time to play "hardcore games" because they are too busy having great sex with their spouse/partner, taking trips to Italy, and hiking the Grand Canyon.

Both our observations are ridiculously stereotypical, but the difference is you believe yours. You can hate on the Wii concept all you want. Unless you get a nickel from the "hardcore" gamer every time you jab at the Wii, Nintendo is laughing at you as they pick up their one-bazillion dollar deposit slip.

You think MS and Sony can just ignore what Nintendo is doing? Dude get your head out of the sand. These companies exist to make money and Nintendo is making a mockery of the competition. It would be fiscally irresponsible for them to ignore what the Wii has going on.

8.3 - Thats the kind of ignorant crap...
That makes me wonder why the MS guys are embracing the motion controls.

"Only the old and retarded"

But when MS pulls out a motion controller, it's "Da graytist thang eVar! What a smart move by MS"

When Nintendo or Sony does it..."dumbest idea ever....way to copy"

Hypocrites.

heyheyhey - you can say the Wii is the most popular console, but it isn't a great console.

It has many great games, it has a great controller which revolutionises the way we control games and it is making lots of money, BUT it is not a great console.

The console itself is actually very poor.
If the Wii came with a standard controller instead of the Wii-mote it probably should have been released in 2003 (18 months after the Gamecube)

Nintendo are making buckets of money off people that want to waggle a controller in their living room with their mates, but they have no idea how many MHz or Gbytes a dollar buys you.

You get all these people complaining about the price Microsoft charges for the XBox 360 120GB hard disk, but no-one ever complains about paying so much money for a Wii. A console which even Nintendo admits has overclocked Gamecube components in it and has lower specs than an iPhone.
The hardware is HUGELY HUGELY underpowered for this generation and is way too expensive for what you get.

I'm not a Sony/MS fanboy I'm a massive Mario and Zelda fan and I've bought all the console Marios and Zeldas since Super Mario Brothers. All - and I mean All - of them are brilliant. I can't fault the games they've been great, even in the face of the hardware limitations, but the console I can fault. It is poor.

BUT the Wii is a sales phenomenon. The public are ignorant to hardware specifications, and the only thing that differentiates the Wii from the PS3 and 360 in their eyes is the Wii-mote = sale!
I guess it's a really smart move by Nintendo.

You might be right about all the technical aspects of the machine, but you are forgetting basic economics. People are not only willing to pay for this so-called "poor" console as you call it, they are willing to stand in line, scour their stores, camp out, and pay the price in DROVES.

A 3x2 inch piece of cardboard may cost about 1 cent to make. Slap a rookie picture of Mickey Mantle on it, and now it's worth thousands.

"Overpriced" is in the eye of the buyer. Nintendo is kicking themselves for not pricing the Wii HIGHER to better match the overwhelming demand.

GrammarPolice - I understand what you mean.

BUT lets pose this argument:

If a guy down my street sells 100 apples for $20

But I sell 10 apples for $15, then you would probably say my apples are overpriced wouldn't you?

If I sell out of apples. Are my apples suddenly worth $15 for only 10 of them because someone was willing to pay that much for them?

I'd say the people I sold those apples to had been overcharged, because they could have walked up the road and bought 100 apples for only $5 more.

Price is only what someone is willing to pay for something rather than it's worth. You are totally right.
But when I say - overpriced - I refer to the mark up on the actual components.
PS3 sold at a loss for quite a while.
Wii - all the components and manufacturing are cheap, because the technology is dated, hence Nintendo making $50 every single console sold.
I'd rather not pay $300 for a Gamecube slim. For me that's overpriced. But for millions of others the machine is the greatest thing ever. If they are willing to pay the money, then I guess perhaps you're right.

I'll give you a bubble for posing an intelligent response.

How exactly can they sell more Wii's than they already are?? 1 1/2 years later and i STILL can't find a single one in stores. Are they magically going to be able to meet the demand? You can't sell what you don't have. period.

Nintendo just sold 600,000 Wii's in April, just in USA.

You haven't seen Wii's in stores because as soon as they are in the stores, they usually stay in the store less than a couple hours.

so how are they going to sell even more when "Wii Fit" comes out? They're going to sell whatever they have regardless of "Wii Fit". I just don't see how it can have a direct impact.

Microsoft seems to have lost all their initiative, at least publicly. For instance, where's all the new IPs? Where's the significant upgrades to their online service? Sony already has both in place, so I hope to god that Microsoft is planning to do the same.

16 - The Wii is in competition with the PS3 and 360
Otherwise Sony and Microsoft execs wouldn't be commenting about the Wii so much. You don't hear Microsoft and Sony execs commenting about mobile games or online flash games as much as they do on the Wii, do you?

Microsoft and Sony execs are smart enough to know they are competeting with Nintendo.

Just several ways they are in competition:

1) Shelf space in stores and store advertisements

2) Third parties' attention and resources (when a developer makes one exclusive game for the Wii that could have been a game for the 360/PS3).

3) They are competeting for casual gamers. There is no doubt more casual gamers would be on the PS3 or 360 bandwagon if the Wii didn't exist.

4) They are competeting for hardcore gamers. Yes it's true. Not all hardcore gamers who own a console have a PS3/360. Many have a Wii60 or PSWii. They like what both have to offer. That $300 or so bucks they spent on the Wii and Wii games could have been spent on PS3 or 360 software.

That said the Wii seems to becoming this generations PS2 in terms of market penetration - a mass market console. While the 360 and PS3 are niche consoles - they appeal mostly to the narrow demographic of males 12 - 30 who like violent HD video games. If Sony and Microsoft doesn't appeal to the broader market I predict they are install base is going to be extremely limited. I predict PS3 and 360 sales won't surpass 50 million respectively worldwide.

would be more marketable after the magic number 199.00-299.00
but by that time 360 will have the 540 out by then. sony still will lose. sorry sony nice try with ps3 599.00. I dont hate the ps3 but sony should of started off with a price of 399.00... by now the price would of been 299.00 -199.00 by now. competing with the wii far as in pricing.

This is a comment by someone that doesn't understand technology.
Which unfortunately is virtually all wii owners.

You don't sell a Ferrari for only just over the price of a Suzuki Cappuccino.
You sell a Ferrari for a Ferrari price tag.

I guess the problem, that Sony didn't figure on, was that everyone can see the difference between a Suzuki and a Ferrari, but not everyone can see the difference between a Wii and a PS3.

Hardware-wise the PS3 and 360 are the bargains of the century, whereas the Wii would be like a $70,000 Suzuki Cappuccino.
