Players swapping gym membership for Wii Fit
28
A new survey conducted about the Wii has revealed that 20% of 16 to 24-year olds questioned said that they would stop going to the gym in favour of sweating it out while playing the Nintendo Wii, which can only be positive for the upcoming release of Wii Fit in the US.

Most retarded thing I have ever heard. So they ditch their gym membership for a video game peripheral that will wind up in the closet and/or under the couch within weeks of purchase. OUTSTANDING LOGIC FROM THE YOUTH OF TODAY!

In the end, the best exercise tool/type is one you use. If they don't go to the gym frequently anyway and WF will promote regular exercise then it's good. If they don't do either then buying wiifit is a way cheaper waste of money than a gym membership.

It'd be a much better survey if they also determined what percentage of the ppl surveyed use their membership on a regular basis and what percentage don't. Obviously if you never use your gym membership, you'd be more inclined to get rid of it in favor of WiiFit.

3.1 - Exactly what I was thinking.
Their comment would have likely read "I never use my membership anyway, so..." or something like that. The WiiFit will be great for people who get ZERO exercise now, but it's not a replacement for going to the gym, or likely even going for a brisk walk.

Yeah, good thinking. Most people never use it. I saw a test of the wii fit and they said that it didnt help them lose weight. For that they would have to use it several hours a day and work very hard.

I'll try WiiFit. I'm sure it's just a gimmick, but I'm a fat balding queen and I need to get thinner so I can find me a man.

5 - That is just sad
Wii fit will do nothing except maybe help their stabilizing muscles. They could get the same "work out" standing and trying to keep their balance while taking the bus.

Maybe so, but there's not really any funfactor involved in trying to maintain balance on a bus or subway. Aside from simple exercises, WiiFit also has games to help strengthen a person's core and improve balance. As w/ any game tho, the funfactor of these games is subjective.

It has exercises outside that realm. Read this

Feel free to disagree, I think that people are getting hung up on their perception of the balance board.

well some people see the price of a gym membership as something good if they get a trainer with them when they go. That cost extra so they see Wii Fit as a personal trainer. It's not sad that they want more out of a gym.

I'll stick to DDR (Dance Dance Revolution) where I can actually get a work out AND improve my foot coordination. WiiFit looks like something that would get old fast, and I'm more of a person who likes to listen to music, and work out in a public place to interact with people who are like me in losing weight.

12 - No real replacement for real Gym
I don't have a membership to a gym and Wii-fit isn't something I would buy but it is no substitute for working out with exercise equipment. I can see using on the days where you need to give your muscles a break but that's it.

And how many consumers need that sort of workout? Way overboard. And sit-ups? Really? Only one third of the movement is effective for your abs. Again, way overboard.

YA situps.. Doesnt matter that its 1 3rd.. situps burn more calories for the simple fact it keeps your heart rate up more than crunches, Cause I think crunches are where you were going with that..
And yes in todays world and all the crap everyone eats a 2 mile run 200 situps and wieght training is really the only way to say in shape..
balancing on a boogey board wont do much for you sorry
Your prolly gonna say next.. People dont have time for that rite..
well if they have time to play Wii fit you have time for everything I said.. cause you can get all that done in an hour.. prolly less time than you would play Wii fit

Yep. Great way to keep fit. Keep eating what you're eating, then (because of that) do a strenuous and unproductive workout to maintain heart health while preparing yourself for hip replacements and back-surgery. In addition, doing a workout like that while continuing to eat actually puts you at more risk because more heart muscle + a heart attack = massive heart tissue damage.
Come on. For most people 20 minutes of raising their heart rate is all they need plus a better diet. The whole uber-fitness trend is overblown.
Saying wiifit is uneffective because people eat crap is like saying cars are unsafe because people drive drunk.

Ok easy I know that a better diet helps alot.. What im saying is... THE WAY PEOPLE EAT NOWADAYS YOU NEED TO DO MORE THAN WIIFIT..
DO you honestly see people eating better and playing Wiifit.. prolly not.. Im saying you need that uber-fitness to burn the calories 90% of people consume in todays everythings fast fried and greasy food.. Am I wrong?
So these people cancel their gym membership (this is for the regulars that go) and get Wii fit.. Still eating like crap and soda blah blah.. You think they are actually gonna get in shape OR "FIT"???
or are you saying that they will change their diet just because they got wii fit?? haha come on
I dont know you.. You can be any size and just saying 20 mins is good for you.. cause your happy where you at.. but if you want to be actually fit and in shape.. you have to do way more than 20 min.. WAY MORE

If all you want to do is burn calories, sure. But you won't be healthy.
"So these people cancel their gym membership (this is for the regulars that go) and get Wii fit.. Still eating like crap and soda blah blah.. You think they are actually gonna get in shape OR "FIT"??? "
No, but neither will they be healthy with a uber workout. They'll just be setting themselves up for a massive heart attack.
"or are you saying that they will change their diet just because they got wii fit?? haha come on"
Nope. I'm saying they cannot be fit regardless of workout without a dietary change. And that, with a dietary change, I believe that cardio and aerobics are enough for a lot of people.
"I dont know you.. You can be any size and just saying 20 mins is good for you.. cause your happy where you at.. but if you want to be actually fit and in shape.. you have to do way more than 20 min.. WAY MORE"
Depends on your goals. For example, if I ran 2 miles every time I went to the gym I'd gain 0 muscle. 10 minutes or so is all I need at a reasonable heart rate to warm up. More than that would be counterproductive. (Plus, again, running is uber bad for joints) I do have a couple of longer periods of cardio a couple times per week... Anyway, my workout takes much longer because I have to wait long periods between sets as my body type is naturally at about 6'2", 160 lbs. To maintain the extra weight I've put on requires different approach from a runner, for example. Who would not want to stop for very long between sets. But muscle gain is very different from health, even in my case. I'm honestly thinking of changing back to my original body type and emphasizing cardio. That'll mean more long runs like you talked about in the short term so my added weight doesn't turn to fat, but later it'll massively decrease the length of my workout.
For most, they're worried about heart health and a basic energy that will vitalize their day to day life, not in their measurements. For them 20 minutes is generally fine, though everyone's different.
The point is to be healthy though, not to counteract bad habits. Working out because of terrible lifestyle choices is like taking barbiturates and stimulants alternately. It may keep you going for a while but it'll kill you dead sooner in most cases than just doing one or the other.

Ok we are saying like the same thing.. but arguing about it... haha.. Cause I agree with the whole diet thing for sure.. you have to do one and the other..
what am saying is.. 90% of the US doesnt eat right.. even the gym most gym rats.. thats why Im saying a uber workout as you put it would be used.. I mean working out and not eating good is better than not working and eating bad
Again these people who canceled their membership, are most likly taking the easy way out thinking they will get the same results.. even though they wont.. so they will be doing less and prolly eating the same crap.. Thats all Ive been trying to say
At no point did I say eating bad and working out is good.. Its better than nothing yes.. but I was saying thats how most people work.. Eat bad and work out and think its ok..

It's cool.
I just think we get too hyped up about exercise when we could really just lead more active lives and eat right. Working out is the product of living inactive lives and then trying to compensate by squeezing it in at the gym. Companies profit off of this behavior, so you don't hear a lot of negative about it, but it's actually very damaging on joints and counterproductive in other ways. So to me wiifit and uber workouts fall into the same category, even if one does more than the other, they both compensate for us just living in a mal-behaved culture that values squeezing more and more stress and work into less and less time with no time to exist.
And don't even get me started on food. I just really believe with a healthy diet and movement beyond the office, we'd be healthy, fit and in shape without some sort of self-torture at the gym every night.
Wiifit, I think, could be good if people would get the rest of their lives straight. I don't want to do uber workouts all my life. That's making the cure worse than the disease.
