Why DLC is About to Ruin Gaming

Via TheGameReviews.com

"It all started with horse armor. Fanatical RPG fans had been playing Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion to death, and they wanted more. While the developers promised more missions, more realms and more adventure, they had something in mind to hold players over in the meantime: Horse armor. Yes, now you could bling out your pony with all manner of shiny plate mail, because you aren't rolling in style until your mount glistens in the sun. But this stuff wasn't being given away; you had to pay for it, and not with gold from the game, with real money (well, as close as Microsoft Points come to being real money)."

I refused to buy that horse armor. I don't know anyone who actually did pay for that. It's nuts that they would expect money for something so trivial

1.1 - i'm gonna make a game so that
the more you pay via DLC or microtransactions, the bigger the breasts of the female protagonist or whom ever you play as.

*goes patent idea*

Do not buy the DLC because Take 2 obviously had the time to put the content in the final game because they're are already talking about it. You're part of the problem if you buy this DLC. Rockband content is okay, COD4 is okay because they weren't discussing DLC before release, but if you're already talking about content like a year before release then you don't deserve the money.

I have nothing against DLC personally, it gives a game legs. But when people(**cough cough microsoft**) start saying i can't play the FULL game without DLC i will have to pay for at a later date then i have a problem.

I said do not buy "the" DLC. Meaning i was referring specifically towards take 2's DLC. I'm only for DLC that is orchestrated correctly.

1.5 - DLC is a farce
Its getting worse by the year , dev just keep making games shorter so they can screw us over with DLC.
I remember buying COD3 map pack but almost never having anyone to play with. After that i refused to pay for a single bit of DLC. MS are pretty much the kings of this sort of BS pushing Devs to charge for all kinds garbage but sony are catching up.

1.6 - Why will DLC ruin gaming?
Well... cuz we'll never pay one amount for a truly finished product ever again. Now that they have started the precedent, they will nickle and dime us to death. As if $60 wasn't enough... or $120 in other countries.

... but to address the horse armor. It was damn useful in the beginning for me cuz those expensive horses would attack at the stupidest times and die. Of course it really shoulda been included on the game disc.

It's ridiculous that anyone thinks Microsoft could afford to buy Sony.

Sony are a huge company, it's neither feasible nor finacially sound for Microsoft to buy a company like Sony when they're only competing in one sector (and working together in dozens more).

6 - free MMO's
The console game companies have discovered there is tons of money in gamers vanity. Death by a thousand micro transactions. The free MMO's that are out there figured it out and are very successful.

Yeah but not too many people typically expect much from free MMOs. I've considered buying stuff, but then I lose interest and find another game to play.

The DLC will eventually collapse on itself.

it has already ruined gaming battlefield was going to be a game i was going to buy but with the bs they pulled with those guns creating a situation where the richer you are the more of an edge you get is ludicrous i want to play in a more fair arena.

if i buy the dlc i play against people without it so its unfair
if i dont buy the dlc i play against people with it so its unfair

lose/lose situation there can always be someone complaining about skill with an actual legitimate reason

DLC is both a burden and a blessing.

Want to ADD new content later on to extend the life of the game? Fine. Make it reasonably priced, which I have yet to see on any game. (Rock Band songs should be 99 cents, tops)

Want to charge me for content you already have developed and should be, or is already on the disc? **** off. That's bullcrap, especially considering the short runtime of most "next gen" games and the $60 price tags.
Shut this user up Let user speak
Tempist - 636 days 6 hours ago

I personally don't have a problem with the $60 price tag, lets be reasonable and remember that last gen and the generation before it was the same cost (with exceptions of course). Eventually budget titles will come rolling out or $40 games.

There are some games that can be justified in having pay DLC and there are some that aren't. Spore is said to have DLC for new creature parts. That I find wrong given that a game like that should have more user created influence than designer created.

Ok, so here is a question. What if GTA IV was free, but you had to pay for the content "you" wanted. Like a island or a set of guns or clothes or well you get the picture. So, for the single player experience it was pay to play. Now, lol this will never happen with GTA but what if....

If DLC is so bad, people wont buy it and developers will stop making it.

End of story.

The gamers have only themselves to blame for things like this becoming mainstream. Blame the casuals if you want, but they are gamers too. Its not the corporations fault for wanting to make money.

13 - protip: how to tell if DLC is BS
1) DLC is available, for a price, within a month of retail
2) You pay for DLC, expect to wait some time for it to dl, but it DLs a supposedly 5 meg file in less than 3 seconds....on your 3 Mbit connection. it probably was already on the disc.
3) when there are features greyed out in the game that somehow get unlocked later on with some DLC. the pricing varies.

in other words, ace combat 6 i'm looking at you.

no wait. in fact, all namco bandai 360 games.

K'mon people, don't be stupid .. even if the content is already in the disk/done before launch, doesn't mean the studio didn't spend MORE MONEY to make it..

If they offer it for free, it drains the game profitability .. so yes, IT IS A FAIR DEAL EITHER WAY...

Jezz.......

I don't mind DLC unless

1. It could have been included with the game in the first place

2. It gives a competitive advantage, and the only way to get it is to buy it

3. It divides the community.

Personally I think DLC is perfect for games and can really help keep a game alive when done right.......

Who really doesnt want map packs???? Come on everyone is waiting for COD4 maps.....

Who didnt want to extend oblivion by getting the expansion pack?????

And honestly if GTA4 has contect worth getting like an expansion pack or something of the sort that will be awesome as wellllllllll

Now remember what I said though....it is only good when used properly and not for screwing your fans.....

So people stop flamebaiting MS and GTA4 cuz we really dont know yet what the DLC will be and like really....DLC has benefited more game then hurt them....except for EA....who are bastards

20 - GAMERS HAVE A VOICE
Don't forget we run the insudtry with OUR $$$$. When you don't like something then you don't spend $$$ on it. If the reviews point out that a game is missing important items then we should not buy it. Now if DLC adds hours of gameplay to a AAA title then I'm good.

It only ruins gaming for those owners of that other console that doesn't get it, much like the guy who wrote this article. "mandatory downloads" that is the first sing of the kind of supporter who wrote this. DLC is a choice.... period. Funny how PC gaming is mostly downloads with steam, and IGN's gaming download service, and don't forget those "mods" which is DLC that those same console owners will support when it favors them. Blah blah blah The article should have started out like this "DLC ruins gaming because only Xbox owners and PC owners get these features and we don't"

22 - Im against DLC, yet Sony were the 1st people to conceive the idea. i first read about it
In playstation magazine in december 1999,lol 13yr old me lol,I read it while on a 9hr drive to the sea on holiday ! . With the PS2,they promised an 80 gig HDD as built in,and they said with a BB conection you could constantly download add ons ,and thus, playing the same game on the PS2 would never get boring.MSFT perfectd it, BT IM AGAINST IT ! ! Two words and a number for ya ! FORZA MOTORSPORT 2 ! i live in South Africa, and I always say that we were cheated because India took our spot in the line and got XBL before us. So,we have no LIVE (officially) and thus get shafted on DLC.its annoying,I mean, alot of it is free.nt even being able to get free stuf is just stupid, cuz the fact that its free MEANS IT SHOULDVE BN IN THERE THE FIRST PLACE.bt,look at FM2, even If I had LIVE,I wouldnt buy the DLC. I want more tracks ! ! Decent tracks ! ! The ones they have out just suck.

I Call 9MM - 636 days 3 hours ago

I totally agree. DLC on the consoles is being abused and it's going to reach a breaking point sometime in the future. DLC should not be something planned to be an extra 10 dollars on top of what you already paid right on release day. It should be something that adds to the game months after release to extend the life. It shouldn't be something you pay for that is already included on the disk (you know those new weapons in Battlefield: Bad Company are included on the disk, otherwise nobody would be able to play against people with them). Companies that do this should be fined by the Better Buisness Bureau and Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo should all be fined as well, just to get the hint.

If some DLC is exclusive to one platform and not the other, well that's not as big a deal. If one version doesn't get it, boo hoo. However, if both versions of game X on different console only get a few exclusive multiplayer levels or something as DLC, I'm not going to cry a river. But, if both versions get drastically different, lengthy content, then I have to call shannigans on that since you know the developer is just trying to get a person to go out and buy a copy of the same game on both systems just to play both versions. That is just low.

The only microtransactions I don't mind are the downloadable songs in Rock Band and Guitar Hero III (minus Activision charging too much for the songs in GHIII of course). It's not required, but it gives gamers a chance to enjoy more songs then they normally would, they can choose which ones they like. Really, they are the only acceptable microtransactions at this point. Everything else is just a slap in gamers faces.
