Mario Kart Wii online details

Nintendo UK has updated its website with a walkthrough of Mario Kart Wii's online multiplayer options.

One or two players can connect to Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection from a single console, and then select from Worldwide, Continental or Friend pools of players.

"Then you will be placed in a new group of people looking for a match, or you will join an existing group," says the website.

"When the latter happens you will become a spectator of that group's race currently in progress, as you wait for your turn to hit the track."

I still don't get why they make communication so restricted. I know why they're doing it, but it still seems so backwards.

My outlook on it is different. I see it as more of an allowance that we will have the option to send predetermined phrases, considering that the previous home console iteration of the series had no online communication as far as I know of and voice and text chat wouldn't really benefit the gameplay of Mario Kart anyway unless there is some sort of online co-op mode.

Congratulations Nintendo! You have officially reached 10 year old multiplayer!

Edit: Nevermind, communication was more simple 10 years ago. My bad.

Edit #2: Seriously... without having a cell phone and calling your friend with a headset on while you're playing... this will be about as fun as playing against Bots in UT. Fun, but not enough to hook anyone.

Sounds good so far. 2 people can go online on one machine and while waiting for your game to start once you join a game in session you get to watch how the race is doing while you wait.

4.1 - I agree
This is one of my favorite series from Nintendo. The multiplayer while maybe not as robust as some other offerings from others is still a nice step forward for the series. Along with SSB this is another game from Nintendo that is a must buy for me.

Mario Kart and SSB are enough to get me through summer even if there were no third party games to play !

I also think that between these two games the Wii will continue to be hard to come by at retail. I am very glad I have mine.
