Analyst: Wii Owners Will Buy PS3 At Xmas, 2008 is PS3's Year, Expect Another Price Cut

iSuppli analyst Pamela Tufegdzic believes that 2008 is shaping up to be PlayStation 3's turn in the spotlight. She believes 2008 will be a turning year for the PS3 with a better lineup of games on the way likely to boost console sales. She also said that they "anticipate Sony will have another price slash on the PS3 this year, and come Christmas, consumers who originally bought the Wii will likely purchase the PS3."

1 - 2008 is all PS3.
when people start seeing LBP, the PS EYEs capabilitys and HOME.

(not to mention KZ2, RFOM2, MGS4,GT5)

wow.

it`ll be $299 soon enough and moving more units than you`ll have thought possible.

it outsold the 360 in 2007 being almost $300 more expensive.

what do you think will happen when it`s $199-$250?

PS3 will sell more than PS2.

this is what they were talking about when they were talking LONG TERM.

by this time next year it will have sold 30-40 million plus.

this is gonna be crazy.

1.2 - @the wicked one
40 might be a BIT high.

but i think it can do 30, FOR SURE.

around GTA sales will RISE LOTS.

and then it`s a steady flow of unbelievable SOFTWARE.

i think 30 can happen.

we shall find out soon enough.

The momentum has finally turned in Sony's favor. They have restructured their entire company, reestablished a good outlook on the PS3 from the mass media, and furnished an impressive Playstation lineup for 2008 (and 2009 I suppose). Not bad considering it has been playing catch up to rival consoles as a victim of circumstances since day one.

30-40 million?
No.
Wii could pull out 30-40 million this year, but its Sells Were the highest of any console for years.

Though I'm no Fanboy, I own a 360, Ps3, and Wii, and love them all...

So. Peace. Love..and...FFVII Remakes :D

Here is one of the reasons why Wii owners will buy PS3: Solid Snake is in Super Smash Brawl, so Wii owners who play this game will be curious about who this character is and will want to play MGS4 and that's only on the PS3 for the time being. The highly theorized MGS4 port will not come out in 2008.

@Mike:

Perhaps they get curious if they have money readily available. Which most people don't have at such quantities... Also, I doubt parents are going to get a PS3 to their children that easily as they get Wii. Snake can do only so much, and I strongly doubt it'd make "casuals" to jump into PS3 bandwagon.

recession or not, the system will still sell well. You have to consider how long the recession will last, and how many of the people that it will affect are also those who would potentially buy a ps3. sooner or later, those marginal consumers will buy their ps3. consider the possible price cut too.

4.3 - To hit mass market
it must have a mass market to sell to. You do understand that economically the US is in the toilet. The pound is almost $3US and the Euro is $2. The value of an american dollar keeps shrinking. The country is losing jobs left and right to China, India and Vietnam. Most people here are living off of their credit cards. It is not a good look for food much less gaming.

What metrics did you use to decide that the US is going into a recession? Listening to the media?

Maybe this will help:

Good question, those groups u mentioned most likely won't give a damn.
But kids in their family will, and they'll use Blu-ray and Littlebigplanet to convince them to do so. (And ofcourse all they wanna play r Resistence2 and GOW3)

Thats also how I convinced my dad to share half of PS2's price in 2000 (with DVD and racing games!).
Kids can even show vids of LBP, PS3 eye, and say it's a next-gen Wii or watever instead of me just talked and talked in 2000.

My dad is 50 he plays High Stakes Poker on the PS3 and watches tons of Bluray. Your point is invalid. Bluray was the reason he bought one, then eventually downloaded some games off the PSN.

Many of my friends, who currently own a wii, are planning to buy a ps3 soon. Let's be realistic here, with so many original and killer titles, ps3 is going to win big in 2008. I think it's silly to deny the fact that ps3 will own this year.

8.1 - wii
i have a wii, and i'm definitely getting a ps3, if not this year then next year. the only thing keeping me from selling my wii is smash (a game that i think will add a huge amount of value to the system), and a new zelda game, or any other random exclusive gems that could come out for the system.

but the ps3 killer titles, integration with psp, and backwards compatibility are what's catching me.

10 - Nintendo and Sony customers have ALWAYS been one in the same! Sony IS home entertainment.
Since the early 90's. Sony and Nintendo first party offer clever games. With hidden punches and stuff. It's hard to describe. Look at IGN's top 100 of all time list. It's dominated by Nintendo and Sony. It's always been like this. She is right! With the added appeal of HOME, PSN (can't wait for Wipeout HD!), Singstar, Little Big Planet, Gran Turismo, etc.(I don't have to name) and Blu-ray Discs plus a price cut? It's a wrap, she's right!

11 - As an orginal PS3 owner...
Its been a good year for the PS3...we saw a huge turnaround and Sony is now on the ball.

2008 will be a killer year...and sony will not shoot its wad early like microsoft did last year....All microsoft has in Gears of War 2 in 2008.

Home is gonna be big for the casual gammers....microsoft has nothing for the casual gammers....after seening what you can do in home and all the killer titles on the PS3 by...christmas 2008....the wii folks will migrate to the PS3 is droves after a $100 price drop.

Wii owners will buy a PS3 at xmas? Unless they're getting it for a BluRay player I don't see a majority crossing over. I'm sure many Wii owners will but not all of them. Considering alot were gifts from parents, I'm not sure if a parent like that would first buy their child a 250 dollar Wii one Xmas, then the next Xmas they would buy a 350 dollar gaming machine, assuming a price drop of course. I don't think most parents would be so supportive of a console with alot of M-rated games either, although LBP is a factor.

And yes 2008 and 2009, probably, is PS3s year. The PS3 has tons of momentum starting from the holidays, and the way I see it it wont be slowing down anytime soon. MGS4, LBP, Home, R2, and GT5 Prologue will dramatically help PS3 sales. 2009 will have GoW3, FFXIII, and 8 days(?) and a lot of other games as well. As history has shown, once Sony gets going, it wont stop. It may slow down at times, but it definitely will not stop.

Home rivals Animal Crossing (Wii's would-be online juggernaut). And Little Big Planet is what I would think the original Mario would be if it came out today. There is a decent shot here.

Seriously, anyone paying any attention to gaming this year could've made this exact same "analysis" and "predictions".

16 - As a dual PS3 owner I may even by a Wii for the kids later in the year...
I posted the following in another thread but it seems appropriate here. I do think it is reasonable to own both consoles as they offer different things:

I don't wish to gloat, but when I purchased my Sony Bravia 1080P TV, I could not contemplate not having a Blu-Ray device to go with it, and I did not want to lose my gaming PS3 in my bunker(private hideaway).
The PS3 is so versatile that it made absolutely no sense to purchase anything else but a PS3 for the new T.V in the living room.
I knew the PS3 was excellent on my benq for gaming, but on a big 1080P.....Blu-Ray movies are stunning, viewing photo's and home movies are fantastic, music with visualizers(80GB ipod may be on ebay soon), and may I say how cool it is to slouch on the couch and access the Internet on a big screen!
People this year are starting to come around to just how good the PS3 really is, most of us that owned one last year already knew this and probably did not understand the negative press of last year. How things change.

Just a final note, please do not reply with talk of attach rate, I do not care for such an argument. I do know that one PS3 is going to be attached to lots of Blu-ray movies, and the other will have lots of games ;)

Why Wii owners?

A lot of 360 owners also buy PS3, hardcore gamers want to have both. Many PS2 owners who don't have a next gen console yet.

I think anyone could buy a PS3, I wouldn't single out Wii owners.

17.2 - I agree
as a 360 owner and future ps3 owner (mgs4 bundle) it's sad to see anaylyst falling victim to the fanboy wars. it's like if you have a 360 or a ps3 you must automatically hate the competitor's console. I like gaming on my 360 and I have a lot of respect for the ps3. I also believe if fanboys had the option or the means to own both we would have some bias, but it would not be as bad as it is today.

Man, Sony should at least drop the price in Aussie/ New Zealand at least. There would be nothing worse than to buy a NZ$800 (US$640), just to see a price drop a month later.
By the way, we've NEVER seen a price drop in this part of the world.

They should at least say when they will drop the price, cos if people speculate that there will be a price drop soon, they won't buy. But if its gonna be in december lets say, they might just decide to not wait and get one now. I know i would
