Analysis of Americas Sales for the Week Ending July 19, 2008

VGChartz writes: "Xbox 360 sales more than doubled from last week. However, Wii & DS were still the top selling platforms. NCAA 09 pushed EA ahead of Nintendo as the top publisher for the week. Total hardware and software sales were increased over last week.

On July 13th , Microsoft's dropped the price of the 20 gig Xbox 360 to $299 so it could introduce a new Xbox 360 sku with more hard drive space later. With sales now in for the week ending July 19th , Xbox 360 sales have seen a large boost with two of the three models currently priced for under $300. Microsoft's move coincides with Sony starting to phase out the 40 gig PS3 at $399, just as it has done with previous skus, since the 80 gig PS3 will be available for $399 in September. . Overall, it looks as if the Metal Gear Solid 4 bundles will have roughly the same impact as the temporary availability of the 20 gig Xbox 360 at $299, while the PS3 model with more memory at the current 40 gig price & the 360 model with more memory at the current 20 gig price should amount to a draw as well.

Year over year sales continue to show interesting trends. At this time last year, Xbox 360 cost $480/$400/$300. It now costs $450/$300/$280. As a result, Xbox 360 sales increased by 65,000 year over year. However, like the PS3 earlier this month, Xbox 360 year over year comparisons will become less impressive after August 8, 2007 when the Xbox 360 saw its first price cut, and the year over year growth looks like it will diminish even further once the $299 sku disappears and we move toward the Halo 3 weeks of 2007.
