It’s too late for Xbox to control the narrative after studio closures

The latest round of Xbox studio closures has further revealed Microsoft’s inability to be proactive and responsive in its communication.

There's a pattern. It seems like in May every year there's some blunder. Last year Phil was crying and mad at ABK possibly not going through and how Redfall sucked. Year before that Redfall and Sf getting delayed.

Next months all will be forgiven by Xbox fanboys because they put on a great show or whatever. Then come next year MS creates more fires in their house rinse and repeat. This happens every year don't fall for this trap this year.

-Foxtrot17d ago

The shows are an issue when they seem to promise things that either eventually dissapoint or never see the light of day

Apparently Perfect Dark is having a lot of trouble, Fable 4 is still nowhere to be seen, Everwild, State of Decay so on

Profchaos17d ago

Maybe the studios are delaying their games internally so they don't get shut down.

Phil walks into playground games hey is fable ready yet.

Turn 10 guys no please we have families we have to delay it

Lightning7717d ago

I think Perfect Dark will finally be shown off. Fable was shown in engine last year. I'm not so much worried about the releases necessarily I'm more worried about if they do release the games, it won't hit their unrealistic metrics of success therefore closure.

Skuletor17d ago

Maybe it's all a scheme to drop share prices, buy up a bunch of them, then sell them when their value rises, probably not but I wouldn't put it past them.

Profchaos17d ago

This sort of news doesn't hurt Microsoft share prices at all Xbox is just to small it's a single tiny arm in a multi arm beast.

Xbox could. Lose tomorrow and the shareholders would be like oh ok so how's our ai

lelo2play17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

Microsoft have no idea what they are doing in gaming. It's time for them to just leave the gaming scene.
It would be better if some other company took their place as the third console developer, beside Sony and Nintendo.

Mark my words... If Hellblade 2 flops in sales, Ninja Theory will be killed off.

Skuletor17d ago

It would be interesting to see what Apple could do but their consoles would probably be way overpriced.

Hedstrom17d ago

Apple would price their console 1500$ and their games 100$. But it would apparently still sell somehow!

badz14916d ago

did you see how much they are charging for the new iPad?

Skuletor16d ago

@badz149
Checkout the premium for the 2TB storage upgrade.
I can get a 13-inch iPad Pro Wi-Fi + Cellular 2TB with nano-texture glass — Space Black for the low price of $5,199.00 NZD.
Seems slightly overpriced but I'm not the target audience anyway.

FinalFantasyFanatic16d ago

I don't think Apple can really innovate any more though, their phone sales have slowed right down, it's going to be tough for them to enter the gaming market, especially if they're not smart about it.

romulus2317d ago

Since HB2 will be going directly to gamepass sales will most assuredly be low. If it's low enough to shutter NT remains to be seen but that would be disastrous for MS if that happened.

SeTTriP17d ago

This game will not move the game pass needle.

anast17d ago

It's going to flop in the corporate world. If it were in independent spaces, it would do just fine.

northpaws17d ago

And the problem is, it won't do well in sales. It is too short to be sold at full price, and it is also available day one for all game pass subscribers, and now some of their games are on PS, so if PS gamers want to try it, they will also wait.

MS is just setting their studios for failure and then close them down when it happens.

Look at Hi Fi Rush... they shadow drop it so no hype could be built... And then releasing on PS too late... And then before it gives them time to sell the game, they closed the studio...

Lightning7717d ago

Apparently there's gonna be more lay offs ro come according to Jason Shreier.

It's over ppl.

Elda17d ago

XB fans better buy those digital only copies of Hellblade 2 instead of renting the game through GP otherwise Ninja Theory will be next.

Hypertension14017d ago

I also feel like Turn 10 and the forza motorsport series is on its last legs.

The newest game in the series completely killed off most of its fanbase.

Vits17d ago

At this point, it's hard to find a single studio that isn't in danger. Tango has created their most well-regarded new IP of the last 10 years and was likely Xbox best entry point to Japan. However, it has been shut down, so now all bets are off.

Tacoboto17d ago

I know, right?

And the former head of Turn10 became the head of Xbox Game Studios only back in November. What a load of pride and accomplishment

anast17d ago

They are all going mobile and/or streaming through a ROKU type box.

Tacoboto17d ago

I pre-ordered the game on Sunday on Steam before all this madness. Having it through Game Pass, I know I'll install it on Xbox to compare console vs Ultrawide on PC, but PC is where I want to play and I was compelled to buy it for how astounding of an experience the first one was to me.

Considering the time they were allowed to work on something only 8 hours long, I'm highly hoping that these are going to be some of the most well-polished 8 hours of the generation so far.

... Not that it matters though. Remember HiFi Rush hit their metrics and expectations. Even if they tell us it's successful, fans and employees alike can't expect that to mean the studio's safe or secure.

We'll only know it's successful if they get to live to see a PS5 port through. If a PS5 port isn't in the rumor mill, we know they'll go under like Arkane Austin and the oh-so-close offline Redfall patch.

anast17d ago

They are downsizing. They don't need a ton of people to dev mobile games and run a few live service games.

XiNatsuDragnel16d ago

Again it's a d move and did Microsoft offer these employees jobs or incentives to continue working on those branch nah there's no need to damage control here.

badz14916d ago

downsizing? after spending $77B on acquisitions of 2 publishers? WTF?

anast16d ago

Every time a company buys another company the dismantle it for profit.

KwietStorm_BLM17d ago

Who cares about a narrative at this point. They did what they did. They've been barreling towards this point for years, everyone without green shades on called it, and now we're gonna wait for Lord Spencer to do another round of interviews? It's just the same thing over and over. Scrooge McDuck doesn't care about the health of the industry. It's just buy buy buy. And the judges in the FTC trial don't have clean hands either, but they rarely understand anything if it isn't fed to them with a baby bib. This is like Embracer Group, except it's actual house money they're playing with, so they get away with it time and time again. For God's sakes, instead of making games, they bought Zenimax just to keep Starfield away from PlayStation. C'mon man this is a joke.

10 Biggest Xbox Mistakes of All Time (So Far)

The Xbox brand has done a lot of good over the years, but their various blunders are pretty wild to look back on in their magnitude.

Ironically number 9 can save them at this point (releasing games on multiple platforms)

ChasterMies3h ago

By “save them” you mean make more profit for Microsoft. Xbox will still be a dying hardware platform.

OtterX15h ago

You could add the naming scheme for the consoles, it just confuses customers. I know they wanted to avoid traditional numbering bc it would always be lower than their competitor, but this whole 360 then One then Series thing is confusing af. Imagine a Soccer Mom trying to figure this stuff out. I still mistakenly call the Series X the One from time to time on accident.

RNTody15h ago

Don't forget about the Xbox One, Xbox One X and Xbox Series X! Good luck to Soccer moms around the world.

S2Killinit2h ago(Edited 2h ago)

They did that on purpose to confuse and direct attention away from the generational numbering.

MS doesn’t like reminding people that they joined the industry after others had already been involved in gaming.

For instance, they called the xbox “360” to combat PlayStation “3” because they wanted to seem like “more” than “3”, so instead of xbox 2, they opted for xbox 360. Also this had the additional benefit of selling consoles to uninformed parents who might purchase a “360” instead of a “3” by mistake, or because they thought 360 was more than 3. Kind of a disingenuous move.

They have been continuing with their confusing naming patterns for pretty much the same reasons. Frankly, it fits with who and what they are as a brand.

Cacabunga15h ago(Edited 15h ago)

Phil Spencer is the worst that has happened to Xbox.
They built a respectable brand up to Xbox one. Then this guy took over and things became a joke

Reaper22_10h ago

He still has his job. Something you can't say about Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga10h ago

Both bad execs. One is on job and one thankfully retired.

bunt-custardly5h ago

Phil Spencer was also on the team back when 360 was around, alongside Shane Kim, Peter Moore etc. I think the damage that did the most harm was the Don Mattrick "Always Online" console (ahead of its time basically). They handed Sony and Nintendo a free-pass when that was revealed. It went downhill from there. Then the corporate machine went into full swing to try and recover. They have to a degree as a games company for the masses, and less so for the core gamer. Outside USA, the Xbox brand does not sell as well as Japanese based consoles (citation needed).

Cacabunga4h ago

Want a decision maker. The always online and TV plans was a disaster yes, but they caught up by announcing 1st party games that gamers actually kept the hype going.. until this moron took over and introduced the PC day one release.. e all know where that ended..

S2Killinit2h ago

I dont think they were ever a respectable brand, not since the beginning, when their goal was never to be involved and share in the gaming space. I think the OG xbox was an exception because MS as a brand was still getting its foot in and so the people behind that were people of the gaming industry.

MaximusPrime_13h ago

Really good video.

I remember the days with RRoD was big news on here, N4G.

Microsoft had it turbulence number of years.

Looking at the success of Sea of Thieves despite being 6 years old, time to release Halo, Forza horizon 4 & 5 on PS5. It'll help their revenue

shinoff218310h ago(Edited 10h ago)

2 of the 4 games they did already sold really well. So it's definitely going down. Idk about halo or forza but I feel those studios they've bought in the last 5 years, their coming

ChasterMies6h ago

I found this video painful to watch. Can someone list them out?

Top 10 for me from are:
1. 2013 reveal presentation
2. Bundling Kinect 2 with Xbox One
3. RRoD or why rushing to market with hardware is always a bad idea.
4. Buying studios only to close them.
5. Ads on the Home Screen
6. Letting Halo die.
7. Letting Geard of War die.
8. Every console name
9. Charging for Xbox Live on Xbox 360 when Sony let PS3 players play online for free.
10. Cancelling release of OG Xbox games after the Xbox 360 launched.

Two Decades Later, the Original Splinter Cell is Still a Masterpiece

They don't make games like this anymore.

vgvill9d ago

Too dated in my book. The AI is way too unpredictable to be acceptable today. It's definitely a game of its time.

Jingsing9d ago (Edited 9d ago )

Agreed with those sentiments. The quality of the CPU controlled characters make or break a stealth game and they are pretty poor in all the Splinter Cell games by today's standard. This is what led me to playing Spies vs Mercs all the time in later games just to get a better stealth experience from a real person. Arguably Sony are making better stealth games albeit not Tom Clancy stuff.

TheProfessional9d ago (Edited 9d ago )

You should stick with fortnite or one of the countless bloodborne style games then. What a joke.

rlow19d ago

I had a good time with the game. It is a product of its time. But when it came out it was a must have game for a lot of people. I wish Ubisoft would make another game in the series or at least a reboot.

vgvill9d ago

They are making a remake, I think. I loved the original game when it was released, but I tried to play it again in recent years and just couldn't get on with it. The same with the older Hitman games.

PrecursorOrb9d ago

Yeah chaos theory still holds up though I gotta say. If you’re a fan of the series I highly suggest you go back to that one. Ubi has said they are remaking sc for “modern audiences”. I don’t have a lot of faith for the future of that company

Chocoburger8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

Due to the lack of modern stealth games, and me constantly playing the MGS series, I've been looking for alternative stealth games to play, and went back and re-played the SC series recently. I wouldn't call SC1 or SC:PT masterpieces, there are AI issues, they're very much trial-and-error games, and that can lead to a lot of frustration. I also found the stories in this series to be boring, uninteresting, and just sloppily told. Cinematics are also of poor quality for both in-game scenes and CG cut-scenes, the soundtrack didn't leave any impression on me either.

Chaos Theory is better, but there was still a lot of room for improvement, and Double Agent (old gen ver.) was a sloppy mess that ended up a regression from CT. But still, at least they tried back then, these days Ubi-junk doesn't even try to make good games!

HvNzSoul17h ago

Everyone needs to quit with all of the unnessacery Ubi-hate. SC Conviction and Blacklist are both still good games.

HvNzSoul16h ago

Everyone needs to quit with all of the unnecessary Ubi-hate. SC Conviction and Blacklist are both still good games, they just weren't 100% focused on stealth with Conviction and they remedied that in Blacklist. The only thing they have released recently that I was disappointed with was Watch Dogs Legion, and Skull & Bones. Everyone seems to be salty about the misleading trailer for the original Watch Dogs and The Division. Which are also, both good games, and actually Watch Dogs seems like it was ahead of its time even with all the trailer drama (having gone back and played recently, can say the game didnt deserve all the flak). Yeah the misleading E3 trailer that had better graphics than release is understandable to a very small degree, when most Teaser Trailers, or Game Demo's only have that portion of the game developed so they use the highest quality assets of w/e they have being showed, or what they are showing was made purely for the showing, allowing for extra polish . As to the gripes about minor game design changes, or cut features upon a games release just goes to show how unknowledgeable most gamers are in terms of how game development works or to even understand what what the hell a WIP, let alone titles still in early development.

Good games from Ubi since 2014 (Year that SC Blacklist Released) include:

Watch Dogs 1 & 2
The Division 1 & 2 (Although I had a hard time getting into The Division 2 at first)
R6 Siege
Ghost Recon Wildlands & Breakpoint
Immortals Fenyx Rising
AC Origins, Odyssey, MIrage (Haven't finished Valhalla games too damn long)
Far Cry Primal, and 5 (6 also has a length issue)
Avatar Frontiers of Pandora
Prince Of Persia The Lost Crown

Haven't played a couple of titles those being For Honor (played at launch but didn't honestly give it an actual go), The Crew, R6 Extraction and at the time of writing this xDefiant.

Even if you absolutely hated any of the above titles, they aren't inherently bad games, they're just good, but not always top quality either.

I say give Ubi credit where credit is due, they at least fix games post launch if they start out rough, Breakpoint is an excellent example this and is such an enjoyable experience now compared to it's launch.
