People are just really impatient. A big reason I never complain about Nintendo taking a long time to release content is because I have my laptop and Playstation consoles to help pass the time. Nintendo's games are so well polished and the company has never engaged in anti-consumer practices. I think a lot of people take that for granted.

Nintendo is one of the few video game companies that solely focus on fun, arcade like games that stand the test of time for any generation.

That's what I love about that company. Every game they make is 100% solid. We get tons of articles of other games, crashes, bugs, patches and so on. I have yet to see a Nintendo game get such a headline.

My one HUGE criticism of Nintendo is their refusal to update with the times. I am not asking them to make a super computer that could jump start a sun, because that isn't necessary with the type of games they make. But they need to get their online infostructure on par with PSN and Live. Their refusal to implement these now basic features like in game chat, or online multiplayer is mind boggling absurd.

A lot of folks on here talk about how they want their game console to be just that and only a game console but then dismiss the WiiU. The WiiU in my opinion is truly a game console that offers the most exclusives, FREE online, 1080p games and all at a overall cheap price.

Nintendo really needs to showcase what their console can truly do at this E3. And I am betting the rumored Zelda U, Bayonetta 2, X and hopefully any new titles they show (STARFOX!!!) will definitely prove you don't need fancy tech to still produce high quality, engaging and even more importantly, FUN games.

Yup yup yup on the online sentiment. They also need to market their games better. MK8 is supposed to be the change in that, but basically they need to make people excited and make them want their games. I think the Smash direct helped with Smash and that clearly has a stellar online mode in comparison to the last game. All we can do is wait and see what happens.

slate913686d ago

Could not agree more man. The online is where they are seriously lacking. I thought they would have come out the gate at the start of this gen but they kind of fell short. I

I can not wait till nintendo e3!! All of the e3s will be epic!! Just put this out here because Im late to the party of really seeing Nintendo's vision and can't wait to jump on board with mario kart 8

This year will probably be a really good restarting point for Wii U. Lots of good content is expected and the wii U OS is only supposed to improve from here on out. It's part of why I'm choosing to save up and buy the Wii U before I get my PS4. :)

Implying that other video game companies lack FUN games? That's very subjective. Out of the 3 companies, Nintendo relies the most on the nostalgia factor and some people are just burnt out, while PlayStation and even Xbox try new things, keeping it fresh, which is why they appeal and sell to a lot of people.
They say when people are in love with something, they see past its flaws and find more flaws in others. It's a fact of life.

Btw, arcade games are cheap, with a higher difficulty to force the player to restart (or insert more coins).
Saying that Nintendo games just focus on "fun" is another way of saying that their games lack any further depth.
I know that's not true for many of their games, so what you said was dumb. Zelda and Metroid aren't "arcade fun". One of those games was F Zero, but Nintendo has abandoned it along with Star Fox.

And you still don't see why people ignore the Wii U? It's not just the price or the controller, it's the games themselves. Aside from Xbox and PlayStation exclusives, most of the new third-party titles are coming to those 2 consoles and not Wii U.
And sure the online is free, but like you said yourself, it's really behind the times and Nintendo refuses to update. Why are they keeping FRIENDS from chatting with each other on MK8? Of course it better be free.

Just because the Wii U lacks the features that the other two have, doesn't make them any less of a gaming console. That's nonsense. You don't need to use those other features, you can use the PS4, for example, strictly as a pure gaming machine.

maniacmayhem3685d ago

I never said or implied the other companies lacked FUN games. Where you got that from I have no idea.

Nintendo has deep franchise with a long history of well known IP's and recognizable characters, huge difference from just them relying on nostalgia factor.

Keeping it fresh? What other games from Sony or MS takes their established franchise and goes into a completely new direction like Nintendo does? Compare the original Donkey Kong to Tropical Freeze, Super Mario Bros. to Mario Galazy, Metrois to Metroid Prime. Nintendo is constantly re-inventing and re-vitalizing their franchises.

PS and Xbox appeal to more because they have a robust online, they have the gritty, and hardcore games, there's no doubt about that. Nintendo lost this audience with the N64 and their refusal to go with the CD-Rom format. I have expressed this many times also on this site. I could write an entire blog about why the PS and Xbox overthrew Nintendo's reign.

I know Nintendo's problems, I have expressed many times on this site their flaws, and what they should do to get back on top.

People ignore the WiiU mainly because of the stigma the original Wii left. I have also commented on this many times by the way. Nintendo mainly targeted the casual crowd and once again created a console that specifically catered to their type of games. Making it extremely difficult for 3rd parties and 3rd party sales. This problem started with the N64 and Nintendo's start of their downfall.

You are missing the point with your last paragraph. Nintendo focuses strictly on games for its consoles. Everything about their console is designed for games. Yes, someone can go out and but a PS4 and play nothing but games. But Nintendo as a company main focus is and only games.

ShinMaster3684d ago (Edited 3684d ago )

Well you put so much emphasis on "fun" games in your original post, one had to assume that's what you were implying, even if you didn't actually say it.

But ok I get it now. You're NOT saying that Nintendo is the only company that focuses on fun games while other don't.
What you're saying is that other companies DO have fun games, but also focus on games with more depth in storytelling or gameplay which is what Nintendo lacks and that's...good? Wait... what's your argument again? I'm confused by your spin lol
And like I said before, this is mostly subjective.

""Nintendo focuses strictly on games""

That still doesn't change the fact that it doesn't make it any more of a true gaming console than the other two just because it lacks other features.

In both of these arguments you're ultimately stating the same thing.

""they have the gritty, and hardcore games""
So did Nintendo once upon a time.

Oh and yes, also the stigma from the Wii. Forgot to add that to the list of reasons why people are not buying a WiiU aside from third-party support, exclusives and online. So I don't know why you're complaining or surprised that people aren't picking it up. Sounds like you know very well why.

And it kind of is relying on nostalgia when they do very little of anything else. DK, Mario, Metroid, these are 3 decades old.

[P.S. From the first Donkey Kong Country to Tropical Freeze there isn't that big of a "re-invention" considering the 20 year gap.
Also, Mario games didn't just leap from the first SMB to Galaxy. It took 30 years and the first step in that direction was Mario 64.
It's not the 80s anymore. These franchises are no longer having a major impact on other game devs or the industry as they did back then.]

maniacmayhem3684d ago

No spin Shin, the only confusion you seem to be getting is by you adding more than what there truly is. My remark for Nintendo making FUN games has no relation or no comparison to the other consoles.

I'm not complaining or surprised. I know why, which I have stated numerous times on this site, like I have already mentioned. I think you have me confused with other extreme console fanboys on this site, because you keep adding more to my comment than there is.

Nintendo has established IP's like, DK, Mario, Pokémon, Metroid, Kirby, Punch Out, Smash Bros. etc, etc you tell me how many of Sony's or MS's games have that many successful franchises that are decades old like Nintendo. Like I said Nintendo switches up the formula to keep those classics fresh and for a new generation.

Consider the very first Donkey Kong arcade from the 80's and now take a look at Tropical Freeze. The fact they can take a game from 20 years ago and make something that is still relevant with one of their icons proves my point.

You are right, SMB didn't leap from one to Galaxy. Which again proves my point, there was always an evolution, Nintendo always tried something different, added more, took Mario in a new direction.

Those franchises don't need to have any major impact on the industry. What does that have anything to do with my original comment of Nintendo making solid, fun games?

ShinMaster3683d ago (Edited 3683d ago )

But you didn't just say "Nintendo makes fun games", you said that Nintendo is one of the only companies that focus on fun games. So yeah, you are kind of comparing.

"Nintendo established IPs like..."
Yes thank you, we know that they established these like 30 years ago, but no longer have much of an impact in today's gaming industry. So however old they are is irrelevant.
Sony and MS have not been around that long in the console gaming industry. Your request is illogical as Nintendo has 2 prior generations on Sony and 3 on MS. They DO have several successful franchises today and don't need to be decades old.

I'm comparing Donkey Kong Country 1 with Tropical Freeze. They're not an evolution of the original DK arcade game. DKC was an entirely different and unrelated concept by different developers building on the side-scrolling platforming other games like Mario had already established compared to the DK arcade game where you played as Jumpman.
Tropical Freeze and Returns are sequels to DKC1,2,3 and they're not that much revolutionary from each other, especially considering it took 20 years.
