GametimeUK's top 10 songs this gen
Hi guys thanks for checking out the blog. Music is a wonderful thing. Its even more wonderful when it has gotten to the point it is well represented in something that everyone on this site should love. GAMING!. This gen is not short of amazing soundtracks, and keep in mind I am playing by screwattack's rules here (one entry per franchise) to help keep things tidy and to give a wider selection of songs. So here it is:
Number 10: Mirrors Edge - Still Alive
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLKqzzugLGI
Amazing track which represents the game so well. The song itself gives me a sense of freedom to express myself and a feeling of fresh air, which is very fitting to everything this game represents. I think this song fits into Mirrors Edge presentation perfectly.
Number 9: Little Big Planet - Get it Together
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkNkEDULSBk&feature=fvw
I was ripping my hair out trying to decide what song to put here, but I came to the conclusion that this song best represents LBP. It's rare that you get game music that represents the actual game so perfectly but LBP's soundtrack is the case. This song is as charming, colorful and full of life as the games visual presentation which is why I decided to add it to the list. It has me nodding my head whilst running through the levels :).
Number 8: Killzone 2 - Helghan Forever
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=op7F54aacDY
Holy crap what an amazing piece we have here. It totally fits the Killzone universe and creates a powerful image of Helghast troops marching proudly. It is sinister to a certain degree and patriotic and totally fitting to represent the Helghan army. When a piece of music can create amazing atmospheres like this and create visual images in your head, you know it's a good piece of music.
I am suprised at how PS3 fans were quick to move on from this game
Number 7: Modern Warfare 2 - Estate Betrayal
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAtYoTLrxCU
Please no flaming for adding this to the list. Especially if you havent heard this piece before. Simply put it is mind blowing. It pulls at the heart strings so much, it is so emotionally heart breaking, and to me it gives the illusion that you are being put through an eternity of heartache and despair. It is a piece that literally makes it hard to breathe and for that reason, this touching piece of fantastic music NEEDS a place on this despite what all the haters say about CoD.
Number 6: Wrath of the Lich King - Storm Peaks
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6I2muPfUdOQ
I do not know all about WoW's lore, but when those who do care got to traverse the beautiful Storm Peaks to this epic song they must of crapped their pants with excitement. It has a magical, larger than life feel to it and is a stand out song in already incredible soundtrack. But yeah this is the best of the bunch in my opinion and there is not much to say about it other than it defines the word "epic".
Number 5: Warhawk - Menu Theme (old version)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IH9ANSY_0M0
The newer version sucks, But o boy the old track simply got me ready for some Warhawk action. It is a song that totally screams "take to the skies" and get ready for war. Not only that but the music then switches and goes all dark, just before picking up the pace again and taking it home. The piece itself represents all the diverse and flexible action you will see in Warhawk. Loading up Warhawk doesnt feel the same without this song. ARGH ITS BRILLIANT!
Number 4: Halo 3 - Never Forget
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7w76B7fO_4
Dont be a hater. This music is incredible. Although unlike the other songs on this list, I think this song actually gives a feeling that doesnt represent Halo. However an out of place piece of music can still be great. It's a slow heartfelt piece which defines the meaning of music that gives you goosebumps and makes your hair stand on end. Once it kicks in it gets even more brilliant. Totally reminds me of how out place FFX-2's menu music was too.
Number 3: Metal Gear Solid 4 - Old Snake
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_k3n5me4Rns
Im a MGS fanboy. And this song really represents the end of an era. It without a shadow of a doubt gives me the impression the final chapter to an amazing series is drawing to a close. What an amazing game this was guys and the whole soundtrack was very solid, but this the one that stood out to me as being beatiful, then representing combat and back to beautiful again. I guess I found it as a deep metaphore.
Number 2: Uncharted - Nates Theme
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azLlyiali8w
Oh man. A piece like this is not supposed to work, but it works with a degree of creative excellence. I mean this song feels so different and yet so familiar, it is so contmporary and a fresh take on how great music can be in games. I had no problem scoring this song so high on the list since it is creative brilliance at its best and gives you that epic sense of adventure. I know that this song can if only for a little while make me forget about the world and bring a smile to my face. And the best part is as soon as I press "start" I can immerse myself in the best game this generation and forget all my worries.
Number 1: Mario Galaxy - Gusty Garden
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0R6FnpqylE
A wii game tops the list and for a great reason. This song is without a shadow of a doubt in a league of its own, and to be honest there is no doubt in my mind that this song deserves to be number 1. Seriously there was no competition.
Now this song is epic in all sense of the word. Breath takingly magnificent masterpiece!. Not only does it have that great epic feel to it, but it also has that "catchy" feel to it that we have come to love from the Mario games music for so long. It takes the 2 and blends them together to create this. Hairs stand on end every time.
Thats the list. No fanboyism there :)
Thanks for reading and hopefully you check more of my blogs!
Feel free to list some of your fave songs this gen
A new Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor update is here, bringing a new boss, a revamped existing encounter, and much more to the auto-shooter.
TechRaptor writes, "Our Robobeat review tackles a rhythm shooter that is challenging BPM: Bullets Per Minute and Metal: Hellsinger for the genre's crown."
After years of development, Project Awakening is still nowhere to be seen. What exactly is going on?
I was impressed with the trailer and hoped to find out more and then it fell off the map with no new information. Not sure if it's vaporware or not but I stopped thinking about it and moved on. Maybe it was moved to a new and improved engine, moved to PS5 development and suffers the long Dev times that many games had/have suffered from lately. Who knows. But we'll see.
As for gaming bolt, that video was trash. A long winded video that says nothing for 7 minutes going back and forth on it may or may not still exist and just kept going and going and going trying to produce an informative video with barely any information. Like an article with a word quota that's just paragraphs of nothing. Showing me that they haven't gotten any better at game journalism. If we can even call it that.
One of the directors for the game already said that game was still being worked on just last month....

I'd replace "Helghan Forever" from Killzone 2 with "Silent Melody (Working for a Nuclear Free City)" from inFAMOUS
All great songs, i was addicted to that Still Alive song for a while.
Also love the LBP one and Uncharted 2 song.
Also @ 10 steps, silent melody is a very great song as well. Perfect song for the credits.
If there was a list for Last Gen, Bully's Soundtrack would have to be in there.
