Games and Franchising...

What is it today with games and game franchises, it seems that every single game released these days by developers is already planned to be a franchise for the company or at least a Trilogy. Lets look at some examples shall we, 'Mercenaries' released for the PS2 in 2005, and by 2008 we already have the sequel out in stores, and guess what according to this a mercenaries 3 is already in production, but that's not all, according to this Dead Space 2, Battlefield Bad Company 2 and Army of Two 2 are also in the making...not to mention the small news that Mirrors Edge 2 abd 3 are already planned...While it may seem that I am only citing EA games, which do have a tendency to be franchised, other game companies are looking to turn their games into franchises too! look at Ghostlights 'To End All Wars' a WW1 FPS game to be released sometime 2009, the publishers have already announced plans to turn into into a succesful franchise. it isn't suprising companies love creating sequels, seeing as the best sellers this year were sequels and that looks to continue into Next year with the release of Killzone 2 and maybe Uncharted 2, what do those two games have in common? Oh wait, they're sequels too...what do you think?

You're right. Every single game becomes a franchise. Some games need franchises, some games don't. I hope that developers starting making original titles (Fracture, Geist, HAZE) and keep them solo. Half the games out now don't need sequels. Resistance is a great series for sequels, Army of Two doesn't (Army of Two Two??). You have a point.
