That's... a really good idea. Let people use them as (perhaps inflated) currency to buy furniture/clothing/items in Home, or better yet, PSN games. Hell, they could even add Accomplishments to Folding@Home and increase the output ten-fold. MSFT may have started it, but Sony has every chance to make their offering that much better. Here's hoping ;) View

Keep in mind, though, that the skill points in all games previous to the implementation of Achievements mean nothing outside of the game itself. Achievements are added to a broader framework, and *that* is what makes that system different... and, IMO, better than simple skill points. Sony is wise to jump on that bandwagon. View

You're right, mostly. GDC is for developers, to learn and to do business, and if press doesn't get in the way of that, why keep them out? No one is required to give out info at a conference like this, but they do anyway. Why? Because it's free publicity and advertising, for companies big and small.

If no one but big news outlets get let in, small studios and companies will stop coming. Prices will likely skyrocket, and GDC could shrink to a very small size. Is that a problem? Not really, when you get down to it, but it does hurt the little guys in the end.

That's what I'm most worried about: companies like Activision and EA running shows like these. View

I dunno if the info on the APC was out when the video was shot, but the bubble dropped by the APC doesn't seem to be a bio-field generator... and the vehicle's boost does destroy vehicles. View

Yeah, they do indeed need to be careful, but cutting out the non-mainstream press is not being careful. It's a quick fix that's likely to backfire, like it did with E3. View

Why?
Probably because full destruction doesn't make for good multiplayer. It makes for a cool demonstration of an in-game engine, but there's no reason to go the extra mile for a game that could very well fall apart with that much freedom. View

Combat
... is gonna be the key factor in this game's success. If the combat sucks, the game will be too repetitive. If it's too difficult, people will spend too much time running and the platforming will become repetitive. They need to show some more of the combat mechanics, otherwise I'm not sold on this one yet.

It's a great premise, so I wish DICE the best on this one. View

The one thing Sony did right....
... was to make HDD's not only standard, but upgradeable using *non-proprietary drives*. Yes, it makes the PS3 more of a PC than the 360, but who cares? People understand PCs and have enjoyed using the freedom for many years.

I doubt MSFT will make the same mistake next gen. View

The presentation wasn't about the business side of Home. It was centered on the development side of things. The questions posed by the EA guy has been answered on several occasions, most notably Phil Harrison's presentation at last year's GDC, so again, his question was posed to the wrong person.

Why would they bring along a marketing guy or the project lead when their audience should know what the presentation was about? The first words out of Cox's mouth were informative enough, they guy should have gotten up and walked out if he was looking for business advice. View

Take Two: "We thank you for your offer, but we believe you are severely undervaluing the power of our offering."
Translation: "If you want GTA4, you need to pay a LOT more than that, biatch."

EA: "We can offer lots to Take Two, including the stability to compete in such a tough industry."
