So MGS4 For The 360 Huh..
240 days 4 hours ago | by: Meus Renaissance
I think there's a whole different facet to this story than the actual story itself, ironically. Most of us know Metal Gear has seen the light of day on multiple consoles in the previous gen, so it was never really one of those type of exclusives where a 3rd party publisher just puts it on a specific platform and that was that. And because of that no one would give you an odd look if you suggested, a few years ago, that Metal Gear Solid 4 would eventually end up on another platform after a period of exclusivity on Sony's next gen platform.

Fast forward to the present day and you're getting the exact same suggestion, but with a louder voice. This whole commotion has deeper roots than just Metal Gear. Indeed it stems back to when exclusive games, like GTA4, like Devil May Cry, like Ace Combat, where heavily related to the PlayStation brand but as the cost of development went up, publishers had no choice but to try and, at least, get a return for their investment if not profit from these games and that is why they're being released on the Xbox aswell. This ofcourse shocks the fan base of the PlayStation at a sensitive time where their next-gen console is being criticised from all directions - and the fact that it cost $600 being a kick in the teeth. A moment of contemplation becomes neccessary. You had to think about what console you were going to buy as the reasons you might have had - become limited to a point now.

This theme of inferiority, or loss of superiority, continued with poor ports to the PlayStation 3 and thus gave birth to a mentality within the gaming community where fanboy wars was fuelled by withcraft-like passion. The PlayStation fanbase had to defend their purchase, even though they had little ammunition in these battles.

The idea then, that a game like Metal Gear Solid 4 also being on the Xbox 360 - even though this was as I said earlier a big possibility anyway, was blasphamous. It was simply unacceptable that anymore games could lose that "PlayStation" relationship that it had in the previous generation. These rumours, if you actually think about, do not say that a 360 version would be released at the same time as the PS3 version. Although some speculate it could be within months of that release, the more logical assumption is that it'd follow the footsteps of previous examples of Metal Gear tasting other platforms and so it'd be released after around a year atleast on its debut on Sony's platform. Even this boils the blood for many.

And it's not because it's going to another platform, but because of the recent trend of negativity, or lack of positives or "bragging rights" that the console has had, that anything other than that, is welcomed with suspicion and firm emotional dismissal. The notion of "MGS4 on 360" gives the assumption, perhpas intentionally, that both versions would be released at the same time. So the resistance to these things are what mainly fuel this inappropiately fashioned rumour in my opinion; it's not the actual story behind the rumour, but the timing and the way it is formulated. You'd get a massively difference response from the PlayStation user base if it was "Could MGS4 be ported to the 360 in the future?".

What do you believe Meus?

I think there's a great possibility that Solid Snake will see the light of day on Microsoft's console eventually, but it will have atleast a one year gap after its release on the PS3. As Ryan Payton said, "if you want to play MGS4 next year, you're going to need a PlayStation 3". Is that damaging to the PlayStation 3 in general? Well it's a different situation right now with the console wars than what we had with the PlayStation 2. If Sony begin to show signs that they're beginning to regain their dominance, then no it's not really derogative. But if it has a disappointing 2008, which I don't think it will, then yes it will be seen as somewhat hurtful. However, it's really hard to mock the PlayStation 3 userbase if they get a game atleast one year ahead of anyone else..and personally I wouldn't really be bothered by that.

However, there are some things that challenge the idea of it ever going multiplatform, such as the actual design of the game that Kojima is sternful with, that uses the technology of the PlayStation 3, more specifically the use of the HDD and the high storage space of Blu-Ray (rumour is MGS4 will be the first game to use a 50GB disc). So, if it was ported, it'd be quite a different game than it is now.

1 - I think...
Konami has to do what it needs to in order to stay in business. They put out great games and if a move like putting MGS4 on the 360 will keep them making fun for me for years, I'm all for it. Exclusives are a dying breed out of first parties, this is something to be expected. Unless Sony develops it themselves there is always the chance of a port. Same goes with Microsoft exclusives.

Well personally I don't mind it if MGS4 went over to the 360 a year after release on the PlayStation 3. I wouldn't be complaining about it. It's been done before. It can happen again.

it really doesnt matter if MGS 4 goes to 360 after a certain amount of time.. BUT that certain amount of time.. is after 1 and a half year or after.. beacuse Sony needs people to buy the system along with the game, which is what its going to do, so MGS 4 on 360 .. not likely( konami AND Hideo Kojima bot Repeadely decined this, saying that the ps3 is the only console to release a game like this..) So maybe next time 360.. maybe MGs 5.. or another excusive games for you guysz.. cuz i mean Rockstar has promised sony an exclusive.. so u guysz might get a promise like that from Konami.. ^.^ enjoy all your gaming for the years to come =]

I think the fact that it's such an important exclusive to Sony will keep it from going multiplatform. Sony already said in their blog "We know Metal Gear Solid 4 is the mother of all exclusives". They're not gonna let this slip away.

And honestly, MGS2 subsistance sold horribly on the original Xbox, even with a larger install base than it has now. The only reason most people want Metal Gear Solid 4 on the 360 is because they don't want sony to succeed. Not only do they want MGS4, but they want pretty much all of the PS3's exclusives. Because frankly, they don't want to buy a PS3. Not largley due to the price, because I've seen plenty of them with a premium spend 499 on a 360 elite for it's extra HD space and features. They just don't want to support Sony. The more 360 owners suggest that they want MGS4, the more Sony will do to keep it an exclusive. So 360 owners will buy the PS3. Which I actually could do without. Considering how some of them act, I wouldnt want that kind of crap playing on my team online.

It is a fact that MGS4 is going to move PS3's and with the new mobile game, the movie which Sony has some part in, I don't see this happening unless it bombs on the PS3 and that's not going happen.

Would I mind a later later if it came on the 360 since I own a PS3 no but when you think Metal Gear you think off Playstation and I think its going to stay that way.

For me, when I think of metal gear I think of: "I feel asleep.....ZZZ" from the original MSX/NES version.

7 - MGS4: Substance?
Much like there was a PS2 and Xbox rerelease of MGS2, there could be one for 4 as well. Actually, I wouldn't mind seeing a revision to MGS3 ala the twin snakes approach. Take the game from the previous gen system and upgrade it with newer visuals and storyline. It would make it different to a degree and also satisfy some of that need for solid snake on another platform.

Something like that could be done for either the Wii or 360 considering the platform it is coming from. Part of me wants to see something new be made from the mastermind of Kojima. It is nice that extensions (sequals) to existing games are made, but that puts more of a burden on the next title in the franchise to be a followup to the previous one. Nothing wrong with a few continuing chapters but sometimes things get taken a little to far (final fantasy??).

Sometimes you do get games that are connected IN NAME ONLY (again: final fantasy) but the simple idea of carrying on the name implies that it too is a continued story line. Then you find out it isnt and could get disappointed. I would like to see 08 be the year of originality. Unfortunately that isnt going to happen as there are already announced sequals to existing games on the horizon. Oh well. There is always 09.

Imagine....a whole year of nothing but first titles. No sequals or episodic chapters. All new, all original IP's. See how good the devs can create something completely from scratch.

I did... very well written...

if MGS4 is to come to 360 a full year or more later, than my question will be a quick "what's the point?"... I doubt there's going to be xbox only people waiting for it (i know i won't)... this move might go the way of VF5 Online for 360.. great game, just a little too late and released with next to 0 buzz and hype.

and to be honest, the way they say Kojima built the game around the PS3 (storage space included) I don't even think we'll be seeing MGS4 on the 360... maybe another Metal Gear not based on Solid Snake (hopefully not Raiden neither smh)

Exactly. I don't think anyone would care if it came out a year afterwards, and that's what the sensible assumptions with the speculation is based around. So, whats all the commotion and heat? Because the rumour is spun to make it seem like it'll be released at the same time, or close to the PS3 release date - making full use of the fanboy mentality - which blinds everyone from the obvious truth that that is simply a lie. If it would be released, it would be atleast a year away.

Yea I never understood the stance that MGS4 going on a different platform was tirany. It was never an exclusive before. I understand that PS3 users want the ammuntion for the 'war' but MGS was never a Playstation only title. This is much like how everyone feels Final Fantasy is a Playstation only game. It isn't. Only half of the Final Fantasy's have gone on PlayStation. Yes the most resent ones but still only half. Plus most of the Playstation games ended up on PC as well along with the fact that XI was first on PC then PS2 and eventually 360.

MGS4 on PS3 only is nice and will be an amazing game but I don't see it as a system saver (plus I don't think the PS3 needs saving) hasn't the selling of MGS tappered off a bit since the first 2?

12 - evolving industry
I truly believe that we will see mgs4 on the 360. It's good business sense. As a producer, or business itself, is about making a profit; that's the bottom line. Halo is a rarity, it made 33 times it's cost, thus exclusivity isn't a problem. But mgs4 might need to multiplatform to cover costs. No shock here, but konami wants to make a profit on it's HUGE investment. It's just business people, get over it.

Yes we did read the blog. However you discuss the reasons why it would show up on the 360 and do not bother with the reasons it will not. When you do mention them, you remark on a technical obstacle, payt it a few lines of lip service and exit the blog. That technical obstacle is huge.

Much of this false speculation can be tied to a single misinterpreted comment. When Konami said they wanted to keep the game on the PS3 but might have to take steps, people immediately and erroneously jumped to what those steps would be. What they meant was take steps to keep it on the PS3. Sorry, but that is the way the statement reads.

However the Konami affair is machs nichts anyway. As if they had a choice. This isn't your daddy's Metal Gear titles that were ported. Not in the least. It is extremely tied to the PS3 hardware. There is also the fact this is the first, the first Metal Gear game that Kojima took the time to state would not be coming to other platforms. And not just for technical reasons but he is keeping it on the PS3 for rather personal resons. People keep looking to Konami for answers when in fact it was Kojima that had to allow the Xbox version of MGS2 and Kojima that gave permission for the Twin Snakes.

Add to this the fact that the Metal Gear Solid movie is being made by Sony. And how did that happen? Sony pictures had to negotiate with Hideo Kojima, not Konami, to get the rights. Kojima is one of the film's producers.

your whole life youve been playing mgs4 on a playstation now why the hell would you want to play it on an xbox console? dmc is one thing but mgs? it has one of the most intricate storylines ever made. the plot goes so in-depth that it would have xox fans heads turning.

and the bottom line is its not possible on xbox hardware so im positive it wont happen.

on top of this im sure it wont sell well either. remember mgs2? it flopped on the xbox and the same will happen with 4 if it ever did happen which it wont.
