you are right in numbers but..
when you have a Monopoly in a market like OS, entering this market cost too much (MARKETING , developing decent OS and getting third party support)
so MS didn have any major competition , sure Vista sold very well, the meaning of failure is failing in customer satisfaction, improving OS over last version, improving performance... Vista was just a beautiful OS with awful performance (when it was released some MS supporters said just buy 8 GB ram and you will be fine lol)
and believe me if Steve jobs or other Entrepreneur idols (google managers,amazon managers...etc) had this chance to have a Company with billions of budget for R&D we have many amazing products right now with MICROSOFT brand on it.. shareholders losing a big opportunity because they didnt have sth better than ballmer.
thats a Failure in my eyes . btw I think Windows 7 was the only reason MS can relax for some other year, but in long term they need sth more than just a decent OS , more markets and more divisions with huge profit.
