Playstation 3: My First Impressions
171 days 11 hours ago | by: LostProphet

You probably think I am way, way, way too late in the game for this to be of any use to anyone, but I figure if a hardcore gamer like myself waited this long to jump into the PS3/XBox 360 game, then there must be others still sans a high end next-gen console. Up until now my gaming has taken place on my Wii (which still gets tons of use despite people saying it has no games, and I'm in the UK so I don't even have brawl yet!) and a Dell XPS laptop (which runs CoD4 and Gears like a dream, and I couldn't imagine playing them without a mouse).

This saturday just gone (my 21st birthday!) I finally took the plunge and bought myself a PS3.

First I would like to justify my PS3 purchase over a 360. I want to start by saying I do nto hate XBox or Microsoft, I do not think the PS3 is vastly superior nor do I belive that an XBox 360 would fall over as soon as I bought it. I bought the PS3 for the following reasons (some are very trivial, I know, just let me be!)

  1. I am a huge Metal Gear and FF fan. Seriously huge (that was the main reason).
  2. The PS3 seams to have a wider variety of genres availible
  3. I am a long time PSOne/PS2 supporter (I had both on launch day)
  4. It matches my shiny piano black TV nicely

Now I have that out of the way, I want to give my first impressions. Until I bought one, I had never actually played a PS3 on a big HD TV. I had play a 360, and I was throughly impressed, but that was a while ago. (Just for reference, my telly is a 32" Samsung which does support Full Range RGB). I set up a PSN ID and started downloading demos, namely Devil May Cry 4, Heavenly Sword, Simpsons, Motorstorm, Resistance, Ratchet & Clank, Gran Turismo HD and Super Stardust HD (and Crash Bandicoot 1, but that was just for nostalgia).

The cons. After a long, long download time (I have a crap connection), you have to wait for the demo to be installed, and you can't do anything while it's installing. this was rather annoying, but not devistating. The store doesn't seam very intuitive to me, back and next buttons as forms of navigation started to get a little confused but again, nothing too drastic that I'm condsidering taking it back. No In-Game XMB can be annoying, and I am eagerly awiting this functionality (almost as much as FFXIII).

The pros. Wow. After playing wii games and pc games on a 15" screen, seeing Nariko's face in 32" HD is quite stunning. Devil May Cray is very crisp and rich, I was even impressed by the Simpsons graphics. Simple, but very crisp, clear and smooth. I wasn't overwhelmed by Motorstorm, but it was fun to play. Seeing videos, even 1080p ones can't do GTHD justice, it is simply amazing (I have already put my pre-order in for GT5 Prologue, and I'm not really a racing fan!). The console itself is very quiet (couldn't hear disc or fans when the TV was at a normal volume) and seamed to run cool, I had it going all day yesterday downloading and installing and then playing, and it was only just warm. Super Stardust was quite addictive, and I am going to purchase the full version when I get home.

I watched a DVD on it to see how it handled upscaling, and I have to sya I wasn't as impressed as I was with my standalone upscaler (which is also a Samsung), but it's not an issue for me. I can't wait to try a blu-ray move to see what that looks like, I am tempted to get I Am Legend when I go on my lunch.

Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase and glad I waited. I don't think there was enough around the launch to keep me entertained, but now there are enough games ot make me justify the purchase. I may still get a 360 if I decide I can afford it, but for now I'm happy being a PSWii kinda guy :D

Glad you're happy with your purchase. At the end of the day, agames console is just a games console, and if you're happy with what you play, andwhat you play on, you win :)

The 40GB is the only one availible in the UK. I wasn;t fussed about SACD or Backwards compatability cause I still have a fully functional PS2. I'm gonna look at dropping a bigger HDD in it, shoudln't be too expensive to do.

Good post I must say. I have to agree with you on the PS Store. It took me awhile to get used to its layout. Even now that I am used to it, it is still a clunky setup. I did just read in an article that their doing a complete overhaul to the store in the summer. Maybe to match up with the release of Home? I can only hope but anyways. One thing that you didn't mention that I think is a good point is that Sony's online service is free. It may not be up to par of what the 360 has to offer as far as online goes, but Sony's constantly making improvements to the system and im sure it'll be a great system come time. Anyways, I think you made a great purchase. Hope you can enjoy as much as I have so far.

That's very true, I spose you don't think about price unless you have to actually pay for it, I forgot it was free! It's not a bad service at all (although the european store could do with a bit more content) but I'm just having trouble getting used to the navigation. Still, I can't complain about somethign for nothin!

I did, but I found the aiming to be a little clumsy... mayby it's just me. I'm used to FPS on the PC with a mouse, probably just need to get used to the old sticks again!

As for the graphics... *dribbles and drools*

Very good read & very refreshing to hear such an unbiased approach when reflecting on the purchase of a Ps3. Yea, those really are the biggest cons of the Ps3 (IMO). Hopefully they'll be solved soon. Your mentioning of FF reminds me of my love for Twisted Metal. Glad you're happy with your purchase.

FYI...Pixel Junk Monsters is the Super StarDust HD of 08 (in terms of addiction).

Oh and...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

Thank very much! I was tempted by Pixel Junk, I'll have to go download it now. Twisted Metal was a cool game, but I was always more of a Destruction Derby Man myself!

Your top 3 reasons for going with PS3 were the exact same reasons I went for mine. Your 4th one? Kinda reverse for me. I was actually looking for a silver HDTV at the time but I went with the black one to match my PS3. Anyways, welcome to the community :)

9 - I'm impresed too..
I've been pleased since adding a PS3 to my Home Theatre above my 360. My top 5's are:

1. Silent Operation (can't hear quiet passages on my 360 due to fan noise)

2. HD Audio, superior dynamic range, clarity, plus Bluray and Dolby TrueHD.

3. Easy as pie HD upgrade. I now have a 120G PS3.

4. Heavenly Sword

5. Soon, Wipeout HD.

Yeah I'd say you made a good choice. The PS3 has very powerful technology and it has many features that make it the definitive choice of console to buy - Blue-Ray, WiFi, HHD, HDMI, Online etc. There is so much potential to many things with machine, it certainly is the most complete entertainment/media unit around. The PS3 actually looks good too - the design is just so slick and modern. I live in the UK, and as I soon as I heard Sony were gonna stop the 60gb version in Europe, I realised I had to buy one very soon. I was planning to buy it last December for Christmas but I decided to buy it earlier in October. I'm glad I did, because the 60gb is the best version in the UK as it has ALL the original features and backwards compatibilty. However, BC was not that important to me as I still have my PS2 stored away and I dont see myself playing PS2 games on my PS3 (except the GTA series!).

Another reason I bought the PS3 was for the games - mainly for Grand Theft Auto 4 (yes I know it's multi-platform but still prefer to play it on the PS3), Metal Gear Solid 4, and possibly Killzone 2 and Unchartered: Drakes Fortune.

So far I'm very pleased with my PS3. I've played and completed some really excellent games like Call of Duty 4, which was just frantically amazing! Unchartered simply has the best graphics that I've seen on a console yet, and I loved playing it, I just could not put it down! I still have Assassin's Creed and Burnout to play properly, while playing Pro Evolution Soccer 2008!

I must say my PS3 is certainly one of my most treasured devices in my room right now!

I must say one more thing - I had to buy a HD TV before buying my PS3, a Sony Bravia to be exact. There was no way I was gonna play a PS3 on a normal older TV set, no way. I would recommend anybody else out there who wants to buy a PS3 to make sure they have a HD TV to connect it to, or if not the case, then buy one! You just wont get too expereience the full smooth crisp hi-def visuals that make the PS3 the next-gen console it represents.

I got a really cheap 32" HDTV from Woolworths (lol) for £399, about a year ago. I never heard of the make Relysis, and I wasn't expecting it to blow me away, but I bought it because I didn't have enough money for a Bravia, and it actually turned out to be a fantastic television! Whenever I compare it to my friend's Bravia that he spent about £1000 on at the same time I bought mine, it actually holds up pretty well. It also supports 1080p, even though it didn't say on the box.

If that was a year ago, there must be some fantastic deals out there. I got lucky with Relysis, though, so I recommend sticking with a brand you can trust :)

14 - i love when people say, "best console graphics"
when ps3 isnt a console, and owns everything on any platform in graphics, ps3 is doing that cg level of visuals that people said werent possible til next next gen right now, cg in realtime, so if that is true, which it is, then i really dont see how the minority(pc fans) believe that crysis beats ps3 games in any way.

Crysis looks good, but its target is photo realism, nothing special, since all they do is copy a real life enviornment and rerender it, imaging what killzone 2 would look like if it was using its engine in a real life environment? crysis would be nosis aka nothing, and killzone already owns it in visuals if you get past the pc pride glasses for the thought in previous generations that "pcs are alwasy superior to console" but ps3 isnt a console, so no hard feelings, so get out.

Unchartered: Drakes Fortune just shows how powerful the PS3 is. The graphics in that game are just stunning. Allegedly, it has been stated that the PS3 only uses 30 % of it's power to run Unchartered. If that is true, then thats something amazing to know. The best water effects in ANY game ever can be seen Unchartered - I mean the gameplay itself was excellent, but there were times I'd just simply find it a joy to walk around vieweing the scenery. The graphics looked that amazing for me to do that.

I have a PS3 and I must say that the water in Crysis beats Uncharted's water hands-down.

Except for the fact that the water in uncharted soaks characters.

16 - i think 30%
is a ton to high for an endless machine, Digi-Guys has worked on ps3 for over 4 years, and they have never thrown out ridiculous statements such as "were using 30% of ps3" and Wardevil looks like a highly sophisticated cgi movie in realtime gameplay, so 30% is severely pushing it.

17 - no
the water in uncharted the boat scene looks like water in a cgi movie, better than final fantasy 10, there is no way crysis compares to that.
