Before you read: If you're not going to read all of my comment, and assume it's anti-Playstation just from the first sentence then don't 'Agree' or 'Disagree' at all. This is an unbiased post, I'm just stating my opinion.
Sony went wrong when they were first designing the Playstation 3. First off they assumed their devoted fanbase would never look at the Xbox 360 and would pay for whatever they produced. Which could of been true back when the PS2 was at it's peak, but not anymore.
To me the Playstation 3 seems to be trying to please too many people at once. They want the hardcore gamers and the casual gamers at the same time, but they also want the media nuts. Thats where they went wrong, they forgot that the Playstation is a gaming console not a media center. I never bought my Playstation 2 thinking "Wow, I can't wait to play my movies on this thing!" I bought it thinking "Damn, can't wait to play Grand Theft Auto 3 and Final Fantasy X." So yeah, all these extra "necessary" things like Blu-Ray and a 60GB harddrive is the reason Sony f*cked up. They focused on including everything and now people are refusing to pay the price. I mean really, do we need Six-Axis, or a 60 gig hard drive to store movies? Last time I checked it's a gaming console, though it seems like everyones advertising consoles as "media consoles" now.
Even to me the Xbox 360 is overpriced, gaming isn't a cheap hobby anymore it's now a expense. But I supposed thats what you gotta pay for next gen. Thats where Sony also messed up, they underestimated their competition and overminded their own fanbase. They assumed that Microsoft and Nintendo didn't have a leg to stand on, unfortunately it didn't turn out that way.
Now don't get me wrong, it sounds like I got beef with Sony but thats completely wrong. I'm pro-gaming altogether. If Sony hadn't entered the competition, gaming would of progressed MUCH slower for consoles, hell consoles might of been taken out altogether back in the late 90's. Until the Playstation came out consoles were going downhill at that point. Sony brought in the true competition and overtook Nintendo which at the time nobody thought could happen, just like nobody thought anybody could overtake Sony. Well it happened. Even super-companies like Sony can make mistakes, unfortunately, for the Playstation brand it's left quite a big dent in their legacy as top console.
Just my 2 cents... Long live gaming!
