Story Suppression turning N4G Into a Joke
86 days 6 hours ago | by: xbox-bot

*I apologize if anyone is offended by the photo, but such vile
manipulation of the news reminds me of the work of a certain fellow
who also did such dastardly deeds. It's one thing to reprimand someone
for an accidental re-post because it's not very hard to do considering
reporters may use a different wording in their title, but this is making
this site a living joke when a NEWS STORY doesn't get published
because it doesn't sit well with some people on the site.
I'm a proud X-bot, but these guys aren't bots, they're like Nazis. I'm calling them X-Nats and will do so until justice is served.

I've never thought I'd had to write this story (or any) story, but now it's all starting to make sense as to why certain stories get posted and some don't. Let's elaborate on a story that's currently being suppressed, in this case by 360 fanboys, before I continue:

Recently, a number of websites reported a 68% failure rate of the 360 was widely known by insiders before it was released... the first story I saw of it was from a user named "Pending", but it failed, and although no one had proof, most of the people who reported the story did so because in their opinion that the article was "lame" and because it was not true in their own eyes and for reasons they couldn't prove. Someone attempted to say because the title was made-up or something like that, but the one offender, "Power of Green" posted specifically that it was lame for that reason. Okay, fine; the title was made up. Therefore,  the story failed. But the story was still not published, and the article still was factual.

And so did Boldy:

http://n4g.com/xbox360/NewsPending-195141.aspx

among his comments was one by celticlonewolf

"whats this 360 good news with the price cut and all that so people have to find some old bad lame news lol".

And HE didn't approve it because he didn't like it. I had to take a test today and what it said was Regardless if it's good news or bad, if it's interesting, YOU REPORT IT.

"Pixelsword" attempted to publish another story along the same lines, but the story was not approved.  Again, there was the contributor "Power of Green" saying it was a "duplicate"!  On top of the fact it can't be a duplicate article by definition because no article has passed, which makes a duplication of a published article impossible, this is classical and willful suppression! If you claim one article to be fake without providing proof, yet use the same article to state duplication for subsequent appearance of seeming legitimate, that is the lowest thing you can do in terms journalistic integrity.

On top of everything else, Looking back at Pending's article, Power of Green lied about the title of the article being made-up in Pending's case.

People like celticlonewolf and power of green shouldn't have the ability to ruin reporters on this site. At all. That is disgusting and they should be banned

I therefore implore the moderators of N4G to Publish Pending's version of the article, seeing that his was the earlier of the three, or the earliest one. This is willful and deliberate, and should not be tolerated.

1 - Agree +bubbles
I frequent this site every day, and pride myself on being in the top 100 monthly contributors... So, being here that often has led me to realize a couple of things. On both sides of the spectrum, PS and 360, there are the same couple of people manipulating everyone else. The author did a good job of listing a couple of the big one's from the 360 side... *if you want a full list, I can just copy my ignore log for you* but this is not one sided at all.

However, the only sort of ban that would be effective in this matter would be an IP ban. Since these people most likely have multiple accounts anyways, just deleting a single one would be rendered completely ineffective.

Thoughts?

1.1 - Thank You! And I agree... There should be an IP ban...
...and I also people's vote should be earned by story submissions. People like you should have more power than me because you earned it. I think there should be a way for submitters to respond to defend themselves too, because one of the guys reported himself just to respond. And I also think either side should be able to flag a story for mod review in situations like this. I'm actually terrified to post something. I'm still new to the site and I don't know how reports affect your standing.

I will look at your list if at all possible, and try to keep track of BOTH sides if I can, because I don't think they ought to be shooting-down stories just because they can.

1.2 - As far as I can tell, getting reported does not effect your standing...
but I could be wrong. There is nothing to be terrified about when posting news articles. Look for things (or when you come across things) that you have not seen mentioned or have just been released, get started with the submission process. You have tools there to check for duplicate stories and they work the majority of the time. If all that fails, you can submit your specific iteration of the story as an alternate source. Judging by your character (from this blog), there is no reason you should not be posting as soon as possible. I would like to do my best to help contributors who see fit to submit articles in a non-biased fashion. The irony with your name is funny though. lol

An Xbot with some sense :O
We could actually be friends

Anyways what you say is completely correct, although I don't think there are any easy ways of fixing it..

I haven't done that reporter test yet just because I don't wanna get my head into all those fights and stuff :p
Newstips I can add but no more

3 - Actually, there
are no users named 'Pending'. It's the status of an article before it gets the 10 approvals.

not the ppl, but the censorship is equal, blocking opinions and facts that are bad for them (in the "X-bot" case, bad for a piece of plastic and chips named Xbox 360) and in fact, these actions are like the ones useb by any dictator in history, or do you think stalin, saddam and Fidel castro let bad news get to the ppl of their respective country?

seeing n4g as a country, and they have the power to make a article fail, then, the actions are the same.

the difenrece is, hitler and the others dictator in history did that to maintain their image in a high standart with the ppl, these fanboys to that to maintain the image of piece of plastic than can play games...

He explained it pretty thoroughly in the italicized text above. Censorship was one of the biggest weapons for the Nazis, Communists and Fascists. This is really the same concept, just exaggerated to prove his point.

6 - Great blog...
I think you are completely correct. When you have the ability to approve articles, your criteria should be the relevance to gaming, to N4G and the readers. I don't own a 360 but if I see something that is factual, that pertains to this site, I approve it. I don't work for Sony, if they don't want bad press, then they should not do things that warrant it. The same thing should go for the MS fans (the fanboys are a lost and hopeless cause). We have legitimate articles such as the biggest hardware failure in gaming history getting censored, but the Halo kid shooting himself in the face gets approved. IP bans are a great idea. Bubbles for you ~

Yeah and Sony fanboys don't do it too? It's a thing all sides do. You are just putting 360 fanboys in the spotlight to serve your stupid fanboy ends. If you were really concerned about censorship, and not your stupid fake "im an xbot too" nonsense, you would be condemning both sides because they both do it. Period.

This stuff will not change if people like you just keep pointing fingers just to take a stab at the other side.

Instead of slamming the blog, why don't you read the responses where I blame both sides equally. Just because you don't research the material doesn't mean that you're right in your ignorance.

A story about whether Jesus would have been a gamer was stamped out before it saw the light of day. Reports said things such as "Its offensive", "This has no place here", "This is inflammatory" , etc.

The kicker? The story was written in good taste, and by a Christian gaming site to boot. One of the biggest problems here at N4G is that people both report and approve stories without even reading them. That is irresponsibility toward the community. Plain and simple.
