Fanboyism, good or bad?
144 days 8 hours ago | by: Montrealien
I'm starting to get really annoyed with fanboys. I have this little thing of sending PM's to what I think are fake accounts here on N4G. I find it interesting to see how crazy these anonymous people can get. But I think my little game is really starting to get to me, I am losing fate in the gaming public in general, how can we let this happen? This is my most resent discussion with one of these personas, and I do understand that it may only be an act, but the wrong young one, who just comes to a place like this might get sucked into this kind of madness, and it scares me. It can only get worst...

I must explain that what I usually do us I call out duplicate accounts and ask for either a PSN or a Gamertag. I am not loser, I have a loving wife and a good job with a good circle of friends, but this is a social gaming site, the idea is to socialize with gamers right? Or so it is what I would think it is at least. I have had good discussions with people that I have attempted to call out, and I always retract my claims when I am wrong. Here is  the fanboy wall I hit that made me want to vent about it in a blog...

Re: hey account number ??
guess, not.

I am a gamer, and love all consoles and believe games are the most important thing in this so called "console war". I do this to all fanboys and they are all the same. Whether I ask for a gamertag from a "bot" or a PSN from a "droid" you guys are the same, and true, scum of the internet when it comes to gamers. Enjoy your anonymity loser. You are a fake.

Re: hey account number ??
you are trash xbot and your console is dying rofl.

I dont care how much you like the crap60, its dying and we will continue to attack relentlessly haha O\wN\eD

I have been gaming since I got a hand me down Vic 20 and and Atari 2600 when I was 5, in 83. I have loved gaming since then. Sure, I've had arguments in the school yard back in the day about which consoles where better but at the end of the day we all new the real kings of the industry was the games themselves. Money and the games you preferred where what forced you to choose a console in the end however if we could afford them all we would get them all. At least that is how it has been for me and my friends.

The internet,  anonymity and rabid fanboyism is very powerful and should be taken very seriously imho. We can't let this trend continue, I call for another War, one against the fanboys. Gamers have to make sure that we snuff this down before it gets out into the real world. The Open Zone here  is encouraging this kind of behavior and people are taking it is very seriously, if there is to be an Open zone, you should at least be accounted for your actions, not be hidden behind a mask. I am all for people defending a preferred product but at least show yourself.

If you are a fanboy you must choose a side right? Choose a console right? Well I choose the side of gaming and games, and will defend it with the same vigor a droid, sheep, bot or whatever the latest terms are.

This is my first blogpost/vent here, and hopefully not my last, take it as you wish. Just know that my heart is in gaming, no matter what camp you are in, I am on your side in some form or another, but I will not stand for these pissing contests no more, if you bash a game or a console, you are bashing gaming in general, and I won't stand by it no more. However if you don't like something, try to understand that someone else might, and it is only natural for them to take offence in you bashing something they like. If you thrive on being negative towards it, it is  just plain wrong.

*runs of to try to get his first trophy before work*

Monty out.

That guy is an awful example of a minority.

I am a PS3 fanboy, so don't generalise. I am passionate about Sony and their products becuase they have never let me down, and they tend to be the most original and innovative around. I believe they are playign catchup on the online front, and that is fine with me, becuase taht is not creativity. But I will be passionate when I am told Sony aren't original, or Microsofts first party is better than Sony's. And I will still stress to you, I am a fnaboy, even on these rather fair grounds.

Really, you are just whining becuase you had one encounter with the scum of this site and the internet. I'd suck it up and get used to it, becuase it's not getting worse (it's always been this way) but it certainly won't get any better.

I guess my "whining" is more about the anonymous thing, on web sites like this we have to find a way to make sure people are accountable for their comments. I like N4G and there are good playstation and xbox enthusiasts, I know this. But the anonymity needs to stop, we need to find a way to make people accountable for their comments. That is what is getting out of hand. I do believe it can get better.

I have faced people that think like his in real life at my store, some take it really seriously and they where are molded in places like these. It ain't good. At least I don't think it is and there are many like the example I gave, and no, it has not always been that way, sorry, at least not from my point of view.

thx for the response.

You are right, it hasn't alwasy been that way, but before it was the PS2 and the Xbox and before that it was the Dreamcast and the PS2.

But the internet was tiny then. And this is kind of a natural evolution, as the internet has become the mianstream, the idiots gettign their views out have become mainstream.

It's natural. It's like a nice quiet town used to be just that, until the huge mall was set up there, and now there's all sorts of riff-raff.

Anyway, plain analogies aside, I think the anonymity and liberty the internet brings is superb. And I think taking that liberty and anonymity is the obvious next step for companies, so they can understand us in a marketing sense, and so that we can be policed easier.

So it will only get better from here on out, but if you don't need your posts policed, why should they be? I'd prefer make the fair comments I do, and yet have the liberty to express an extreme view every now and again.
