MS sure as hell ought to be panicking because at their current price points the target markets of 360 & PS3 overlap. If you talk to the employees at Best Buy & Circuit City you will find that most of them own 360's they wish were PS3's.

Frankly, MS needed HD DVD to win the HD format war because stopping Blu-ray was their only chance of stopping PS3. Now, it's simply too late. View

Revisited my local Best Buy to try again, this time at least they acknowledged the PS3 as a Blu-ray player so we're making progress. BUT they still refused to price match because "it's not the same model" which leaves me perplexed as to which model "You'll get a $100 Wal-Mart Gift Card when you buy any Blu-ray player" actually refers to. I wish they would've stuck to the "PS3 isn't a Blu-ray player" stance because now they've just gone & p*ssed me right off. View

My local Best Buy excludes PS3 as a Blu-ray player, although they were more than willing to match the Wal-Mart offer provided I chose something without a Sixaxis. C'est la vie, it's only $100. View

I wouldn't say it's exactly flying off shelves. I'm a single, live in the Midwest & bring home 86K/year & even I circled around the MGS4 bundle for a couple of days before I rushed off to Best Buy to pick mine up. I thought I would eventually get a 360 to compliment my Wii, but:

PS1 & PS2 libraries + BioShock coming to PS3 + MGS4 bundle hype = PS3 sold to me.

Note: I still don't give a rat's a** about Blu-ray as a movie format so Sony's got an uphill battle ahead of them on that front. View

No one's buying a PS3 because it's a Blu-ray player, let alone the best Blu-ray player. They're buying it because the $100 gift card makes the 40GB SKU $299.

I wanted to buy my PS3 at Wal-Mart today to get some "bonus cash", but that 40GB SKU is a useless paperweight without BC. Now, I must go unbundle the 80GB MSG4 SKU that just followed me home from Best Buy. View

Of course, but that has more to do with how poorly PS3 sold last year than how the 360 is selling. But, I just came home with my MGS4 bundle so I'd say MS is going to be in a world of hurt from here on out. View

Not surprising because as a software engineer MS would have to offer me more just to overcome the cringe factor I get when I so much as think about Windows. Google would have to pay even more than MS for the simple fact that nothing spells job security like working for a company that produces absolutely nothing. View

Is Apple ripping off their employees or are Goodle/Microsoft employees ripping off their employer? Think about who has the best software... think about it. Hmm, interesting no? View

Blu-ray isn't being adopted faster than DVD. In DVD's first year on the market 14 million discs were sold to 1 million players. By comparison, Blu-ray has sold 11 million discs in it's first 2 years on the market to over 13 million players.

Now, before you all line up to tell me you own 25 Blu-ray discs remember that for every one of you that owns 25 discs there are 24 other PS3 owners who weren't even curious enough to try one & they already own the player!

EDIT: Singulus makes hardware to press Blu-ray discs which doesn't translate into any semblance of retail demand given that Sony had around a 60% failure rate pressing Blu-ray discs when they began with everyone else encountering a 90% failure rate. View

Bill Gates could walk on stage, announce the 2nd coming & have Jesus walk out on stage to demo a new Surface enabled Zune, but they still wouldn't be able to upstage Apple. Even if Steve Jobs just mulled about on stage for 30 minutes before saying, "I got nothin'." View

Nintendo was spot on in their decision to avoid Xiotex Studios. I can't imagine any major publisher touching anything from this studio ever given a "bio" that reads, "Xiotex Studios was formed as a small company to host the games that I had been developing in my spare time while working for ‘proper’ games companies." Xiotex is one lawsuit away from being shutdown, because they've just announced to the world that they're looking to publish games OWNED by this guy's former employer.

News flash, if you develop games for a "proper" games company you don't even own the rights to a game you develop in the bedroom of your house in the suburbs on nights & weekends. This guy needs to re-read the intellectual property agreement he signed with his former employer & then either find a new job or develop utility software for the iPhone, but ABSOLUTELY NO GAMES. View

LBP doesn't stand a chance on PS3 because it's appeal tilts heavily toward the casual gamer & they're all waving Wiimotes at Carnival Games. If you think LBP is going to be any more successful on PS3 than Viva Piñata was on the 360 just answer one simple question:

When is the last time you created a map for Quake?

Don't feel bad, because for 99.9 percent of gamers the answer is also, "Never." View

Not surprised, really. None of the big 3rd party developers thought the Wii stood a chance in hell prior to launch so no one was working on games for it, but now that the Wii has amassed an install base that will exceed that of 360 & PS3 combined by the end of Holiday '08 there's no doubt that "grown up games" are going to start appearing for it. My only hope is that enough core gamers have been able to get their hands on a Wii before these titles start shipping so sales encourage the development of more "grown up games."

IMO the only thing holding back sales of Wii software is the fact that everyone who wants one has to wait & demand for Wii is split between core gamers & a mammoth influx of casual gamers. Over time more Wiis will find themselves in the hands of core gamers & the Wii's library will start to amass titles like the PS2 did last generation. Yes, for now we're stuck with a mountain of shovelware, but that's only because shovelware is quick & easy to develop. Who knows, given PS3's poor performance in Japan Wii might even get Final Fantasy proper back. View

I know everyone on this site thinks Blu-ray is the future, but honestly being able to store 1,000+ title movie collection on postage stamp sized SD cards that would fit comfortably inside a shoebox with plenty of room to spare is a helluva lot more enticing to me. View

"I know what Im talking about."

No you don't. Blu-ray vs. HD DVD & DVD is no different that CD vs. vinyl & cassette or DVD vs. LaserDisc & VHS.

The fact that you refuse to acknowledge Blu-ray is performing poorly in the marketplace doesn't make you more intelligent, it makes you a fanatic. View

DVD was launched in '97 so how the hell is it's sales data going to be "new" news? Honestly, do you even stop to think before you type?

No competition? Remember LaserDisc? How about VHS?

"HAHHAHAHAAHHHAHHHAHAHAA HHAHAH HAHHAHAHA, OMFG...that was the dumbest thing i have ever heard."

Really? You might want to try giving your posts a re-read. View

Yes, research would be nice: http://www.kren.com/Global/...

Blu-ray sales are PATHETIC when you consider the forced install base of players. DVD managed to sell 14 million discs in it's first year with an install base of 1 million players. Blu-ray has been on the market for TWO YEARS and JUST passed 11 million in sales with an install base of over 13 million players.

BD-ROM drives MAY hit the $100 mark this winter, but that doesn't mean consumers are going to want Blu-ray anymore than they do now. Hell, you've got 13 million people with FREE Blu-ray players in their living rooms & even they don't want Blu-ray.

Before you blind fanboys go disagreeing ponder the FACT that in it's first year DVD had an attach rate 14 movies per player, while Blu-ray has been on the market for two years & hasn't even been able to muster up an attach rate of 1 movie per player. View

2 years, 13+ million players & only 11 million discs sold equals dead format. DVD sold 14 million discs in it's first year on the market & that was with an install base of 1 million players ( http://www.kren.com/Global/... ). View

Yes, Nintendo knew they could have sold 10 million copies of Wii Fit during the NA launch so they sent 800K. I swear these analysts must have all gotten their degrees from ICS (See video if you aren't old enough to remember Sally Struthers hocking this cr*p in the 80's.) View

Doubtful, because the 60GB & 80GB models didn't sell in the US until Sony announced that they were being discontinued.

EDIT: Sales of the 60GB SKU didn't take off until the threat of the 80GB "PS2 Maybe" and 40GB "PS2 Who?" SKUs were introduced last fall, and sales sales of the 80GB "PS2 Maybe?" SKU didn't take off until rumors surfaced that it was being discontinued leaving the 40GB "PS2 Who?" SKU as the only active SKU. View
