Sales do matter because 3rd parties allocate resources based on sales trends. Try to talk yourself into believing some delusional fantasy that sales don't matter if you'd like, but the fact is that Devil May Cry & Final Fantasy didn't go multi-platform because Capcom & Square-Enix saw a healthy sales trend for their titles exclusive to PS3. I think I just heard some 360 fans chuckle, but there's bad news for them as well because Fatal Frame & Monster Hunter didn't go Wii exclusive because 360's trending any better.
IMO this article is spot-on. Sony was the market leader for the previous two generations, but they decided to throw that all away in a rabid attempt to force a new video format on consumers. Pointless, because even if adopted Blu-ray will be short cycled by digital distribution. Yes, Blu-ray sales are up 300% this year, but DD sales are also expected to more than double this year (

I own a PS3, but there's no way it's ever going to achieve the market penetration level of PS2. Consoles typically shed 50 percent of their launch price throughout a console cycle which means the cheapest we can ever expect see a PS3 is $299. Problem for Sony is that when Nintendo releases their HD console for $249 it'll not only have the hype of new, but worse will still be $50 cheaper than Sony's aging dinosaur.
