Don't worry guys, a price cut is coming. It's a matter of when not if.
Everyone also seems to forget that the PS3 is also a prototype of a sort for the PS4. I can almost guarantee the PS4 will be very identical to the PS3 and will launch at lower price.
Come on guys, think about it. Do you really think Sony would invest billions on tech that would be useless next gen?
The PS4 will most certainly use a Blu-ray drive, a vastly improved and more powerful version of the Cell and XDR ram.
Rambus has a new XDR ram called XDR2 which will probably power the PS4.
http://www.rambus.com/us/pr... Warning: Do not click link before getting a fresh pair of pants because if you're a technophile, you will have a nerdgasm of epic proportions.
As you all know, IBM has more powerful cell processors already and pioneer has 400GB Blu-Ray discs.
The only thing the PS4 needs is a graphics card. They can just get a cheap one of the counter anyway.
Anyway my point is that Sony won't have to spend any money on PS4 R&D because they'll be using more advanced PS3 tech.
Not only will the PS4 be able to launch at an incredibly lower price, game development will be easier if Sony uses the Cell again. Game developers with Ps3 experience will basically just sit back and let the games develop themselves and they'll all start to look like Gabe Newell.
Essentially, all the loses made on the Ps3 will be made up with the PS4. Mark my words.
Aside: I wish SCE were a separate company from SONY because I understand SCE's strategy and I would make a killing in the stock market.
