Gah this stupid arguement again... SONY IS A SOFTWARE COMPANY
I hate that argument that Sony is not a software company.

They have way more software developer employees then Microsoft has in it's respective gaming divisions .
They develop software for almost all their hardware (from TVs to Fridges to Blu-ray players - they all have software embedded or not).
They are well know in the Software Engineering Field for having less then 1/4 of the bugs per 1000 lines of code of Microsoft for similar feature sets.

To say they are not a software company implies that they don't make 1/10 of what they do make... heck they have way more programmers then EA and their subsidiaries + T2 and theirs combined... is EA a software company or not? View

Another reason to not care about trophies
They mean nothing other then bragging rights... and is playing a game worth bragging about?

I really am not sure myself. I tend to be against pointless reward systems so maybe I am overally negative. View

We've been saying that all along (since 2005)
Yep... the change from single core and naive multiprocessing to massively parallel is going to kill off a lot of the old guard who were something back in the day but haven't adapted.

Adapt or Die - there is no stopping.

I myself am afraid of quantum computing... I don't understand Qbits enough so if that replaces traditional gates /shudder View

true windows will not work on Cell but:
"So my point is this- Cell based computers (sans the ps3) will NEVER become mainstream if no OS's are written for the Cell's unique architecture."

yep that is why it is not in current computers - but there is a fairly excellent linux distro (partially) that supports it and AUX does as well (fully) so do not be surprised to see a EEE unix based type palmtop or some such that uses a cell processor in the future (not to distant) View

PREACH IT BROTHER!
This is so true:
"What people don’t realize, and I really wish they would, is that Sony aren’t a bunch of technological wizards. They can’t just magic up an in-game XMB out of thin air, or pull it out of a hat. I don’t want to sound like some sort of extremist fanboy here leaping to Sony’s defense as if I’m taking a bullet for the President. I’m trying to look at this situation from a relatively neutral viewpoint. I too have felt a teeny-weeny bit aggravated by the slow rate at which Sony have given us updates but very slowly I started to grow a brain and realized that it’s not as easy as everybody thinks"

but he does make a few fallacies in his statements... 1 that the PS3 only has 256 megs, another that naive multiprocessing is what good programmers due with the cell, and another yet that the system software can't fit more into it at the current moment. The fact is that the system software is even with 2.4 under 1/2 the size it was at launch, Multiprocessing is more than distributing tasks to different processors and 512 != 256

I do agree with his conclusions however:
"I would happily put my money on the in-game XMB’s feature list also being expanded in the coming months with further firmware updates. It’s inevitable that Sony will iron out the kinks and work out efficient ways of including new features alongside ones the PS3 has already, but until then I’m pretty happy with 2.40. Cheers Sony: everyone else might hate you but you’ve got a grateful friend for life right here." View

Hmmm it looks to me that it should trump prototype fairly well. Haven't yet seen it in person though... maybe next month. View

no quite a bit different.

most multicore processors (and massive parallel systems) have turing complete processors as subprocessors - most GPU subcores are not turing complete. View

Cell is different from regular PC architecture. That is true. But as with any good processor it can have programs that replicate everything a Traditional processor (multithreaded or not) does.

We have been saying all along that processors would lean toward the Cell design and that schools need to be teaching students how to handle this (of course we have found many PhDs don't understand it) and so we have been aggressively trying to get teachers to learn and to put out a significant amount of multiprocessing research into parallel algorithms into the publics hand. hold off for a week or two... MGS4 is almost assuredly one that can and will be trophy compliant. (and getting the big boss trophy has to be worth a Gold trophy)

plat only if you get every other trophy.... View

If Alex is smart he would never admit to being the creator of hacks on PS hardware. Sony has a 100 million dollar lawsuit waiting for him. View

No no
I still think that trophies are idiotic - they create tension where there does not need to be.
I argued against and was overruled. /shrug View

How can you say that Achievements and Trophies are a tie when %70 of games are compatible with it but none are guaranteed to support it on PSN. Then you have to go back and replay your games for those trophies to register. With XBL every single game has achievements from retail titles to arcade games.

*********
True enough but for something that wasn't there last week 70% is an amazing number - and going forward eventually all new games will have it.
*********

I love that they make this comparison now and give Sony a free pass on the future of it's video download service. Nobody knows what it will be like. Right now XBL offers hundreds of movies and TV show's. It's been a proven success and is available now.

*********
Sony Pictures and TV have literally thousands of movies and tv shows... and they are already licensed by Sony.
*********

You can't even do cross game messaging with 2.4 while you've been able to do it since day 1 on the 360.

*********
Yes yes you can - now you can recieve or send a message to anyone else while your ingame
*********

Little things like "recommend a game to a friend" on XBL are little differences that are useful features. They make no mention of things like XBL Creators Club where aspiring dev's can make arcade titles and have them available for the public to buy. Then you have the whole MSN integration and web integration where I can send messages/invites/recommend games check my friends list and compare against any XBL user all thru the web.

*********
But it still doesn't have a web browser - so while those features are nice it really isn't a full experience either. With the browser it's easy to send messages to people on PCs... ever heard of webmail?
*********

The matchmaking system is built-in to Live while on the PS3 it is left up to the developers. There is no TrueSkill matchmaking on PSN and everyone is thrown into one group unless the developers do something themselves.

*********
and yet most PSN games have an excellent lobby systems- now how did that happen?
*********

The 360 get's 2 new arcade games a week. PSN is lucky to get 1 new PSN title a month.

*********
True but show me how manhy of those arcade titles can be considered full on games like PSN games can (2-5gigs in size)
*********

No mention of Xbox Originals which is growing all the time.

This sounds more like someone who wants XBL to be free which it will never be. If it did you would see it turn into something like Qore where you are forced to sit thru Burger King Whopper ad's. Any advertising on the 360 is either tied to a gaming promotion or offer's up something free to the user like Themes and Gamerpics and usually tied to 360/game promotion.

*********
well at least you check out the Qore thing - but doesn't the XB Blades system already stuff the ads down your throat?
*********

Like I said amatuer analysis and obviously someone who is hyped up for 2.4 and is losing his objectivity.

*********
it's ok to be hyped and he does have a point that XBL - should be free if their competitors are so close to them in features and are free. He made an unfair comparison as well - when he said PSN downloads are slower - the average PSN game is 10x the size of the average XBL game file .... which means at similar speeds it takes longer.
I did notice you didn't mention any thing about uptime or lag.... the PSN has almost total uptime (except for the 3 days that they told us in advance about) and practically no lag ever
*********

EDIT: Screw the phatom disagree's. If you are going to disagree don't be a puss and tell me why.

*********
here... have a disagree but with my reasons attached.

Disagree if you want but it is true - Sony software development has a much lower error rate per 1000 lines of code then Microsoft does. Care Counts - throwing out a feature because it is made does not mean it is ready for prime time. View

Load of Crap... Most Saves do not transfer
Hmmm

they do forget in this article that many games do not allow their saves to be transferred and are account locked. It is actually more rare that the save works then it doesn't View

Developmental Priorities for the PS3 have been a bit different from what the american audience has desired in the past as the firmware is developed in Japan and so the developers there have used Japanese development priorities. Online is really a nogo/slowgo in Japan so to see that the firmware is reflecting the US preference is actually a major fundamental change in thinking in SCEJ to that of SCEI. Ken started a realignment about online practices before he left and Kaz's continuance of this policy has helped immensely in the new direction of the firmware. Honestly Ken did not expect the outcry about lesser network services so when it hit they had to restart their developmental process on that.

Nintendo is also experiencing this realignment of developmental priorities so eventually expect them to start really picking up the networking slack. View
