Is it really that hard...?
To skip the flamebait douchebaggery? Does the anonymity of the internet + N4G guarantee that EVERY FREAKIN' ARTICLE POSTED has to immediately devolve to MS versus Sony garbage.

I hate this site, and you sir, are emblamatic of the people that have long since ruined it. View

Yes it is
Tech-wise, no. But neither MS nor Sony will allow it. Many have tried, and the answers are always the same. It won't happen. Never. View

NEVER going to happen. NEVER
It isn't like this is some revolutionary idea no one in the industry has ever thought of...we all have. All of us.

In fact, from a networking perspective, it is quite trivial. We had cross-platform play on one of our titles (in house) very early on. There are two main issues that prevent this from happening:

XBL security layers in the protocol make it virtually impossible to interface. Throw in that you can't duplicate any functionality that exists via XBL (matchmaking), it won't happen.

Platform owners don't want it. Period. Many of us have fought for years to get this going...it just isn't going to happen. Ever. View

"That's why they in last place..."
?????????

Really? I mean, really? Are we just making up facts now? The only think I can fathom here is that you are trying to say "that's why they were in last place last month..."

GOD I don't know why I try and come here for actual discussions. View

This site astounds again...
I'm loving my PS3 , I think Sony's momentum is great for us in terms of customer base and increased sales potential for our games, and UC2 is definitely my GOTY thus far, but the rhetoric on this site is amazing.

If you read the comments on this thread, you'd think MS is in some sort of horrible position and they will never sell another console again. We've only been able to see the impact of the slim for ONE MONTH. We saw this same sort of impact after MGS4s release AND MS has had genuinely amazing holiday sales year over year that have surprised all of us.

Be a smart fanboy, please. Use logic. Enjoy the Sony momentum, but be cautiously optimistic and not brazen...it will help the debate on this site be a little more civil and realistic. View

PS3 Owners should _not_ be responding this way...
Before I start, _I_ believe MW2 will sell better on 360 than PS3 simply due to the larger install base. That said:

You are INSANE if you are one of the hundreds of people on this thread who are showing this blase' attitude of "well, we have so many great first party titles that we don't care/have time to but 3rd party titles."

Each and every console owner should deeply and truly want 3rd party titles to succeed, regardless of the relative quality versus 1st party titles. I _DO NOT_ want Sony to turn into Nintendo, where the 1st party titles are steller but the lack of 3rd party sales (amongst other reasons) means that we are stuck with a console with 1/2 ass third party support.

If it is true that Sony has "too many great 1st party titles" right now and people are spending all their money on them, as people on this site are arguing, then Sony has done a serious disservice to the other publishers (who pay the bills at Sony), and needs to work with them to spread their catalogue better. "...with much technological power. "
I really wish some of you could have seen Kojima's presentation at GDC this year. His whole premise was that it was actually the _West_ that has the technological talent and pushes the boundaries in that respect while Kojima productions, representative of the East, focuses on design to overcome the historical technical limitations of technology. The final conclusion was that he wanted to finally merge the technological innovation of the West with the design sensibility of the East for his next project. View

Doesn't add up...
I hate to use empirical evidence, but this just doesn't seem to add up. Of the literally hundreds of developers with PS3s where I work, not one of them used home beyond the initial "check it out" stage, and even on this site you'll notice that even the majority of very-pro PS3 users don't seem to touch it. So either there is this huge demographics of PS3 users that I'm not seeing either in the wild or through survey responses, or the definition of "active" is off.

I'm not saying Home is bad, and yes it is free and all, but I just can't fathom where these people are...the article does say 4 million "users", so the only thing I can imagine that there are _some_ very active households with quite a few accounts/people that may use home regularly. View

RETAIL PROFIT != SONY COSTS
Sigh.

Retailers make profit on all items they sell, regardless of what the manufacturer's margins are. If there is no profit to be made, they won't put the item on their shelves. This is the foundation of a retail economy. The PS3 (and PS2, Wii, 360, etc) has always had retail profit on each unit from day one, even when the losses for Sony per unit were estimated to be huge.

Retail margins have virtually nothing to do with whatever profit or loss Sony or Microsoft make/lose per console. I'm not saying the analysts are correct, for they very rarely are, but you seem to have two distinctly different economic chains mixed up. View

"...a retailer said they are making very little, but not loosing money. "
A retailer knows literally no information about a hardware company's losses or profits...I'm not implying analysts have "true" data, but they at least have the education/experience/time to devote to researching this sort of data.

RETAILERS would know the slim profits THEY are making on the hardware, because obviously Sony needs to provide slim room for a markup lest no retailer would carry the product, but they have no data on the cost of components to Sony.... View

Yes, because I'm sure M.S. execs are sitting around thinking they are at the top of the game and that they can just coast through the rest of this generation on the small lead they have.

Much like I'm sure Sony is sitting around staring at their 10 year plan in isolation without the slightest care that MS is doing so well.

Give it a rest people. Both MS and Sony know their competition, know what their plans are, and are constantly tuning their strategy to ensure they are in the best position to maximize their profits. View

Gypped on NGII last week
I went to buy Ninja Gaiden 2 last week for $10 immediately after the announcement went up, and the website told me that there were no stores in ALL of Chicago (not exactly a small city) with it in stock AND that the game was not available for delivery.

This was not the case with Turok or Condemned, for some reason, which they would deliver.

I call foul and have given up on Best Buy. View

"Nothing that make it into Prologue is a waste of time. "
That's like saying E3 builds aren't a waste of time...

A TON of work goes into putting together any playable build of a game...work that most developers would rather spend working on their actual, final product. There is an INCREDIBLE amount of work that goes into making a demo for an unreleased game, which was one of the reasons the original E3 was killed.

GT5P is an even more complex situation, because it is a "standalone game." Don't kid yourself into thinking that GT5P didn't take months of side-development, polish, testing, fixing and submissions away from development of the core game. View

Simple...
Because when you factor in the cuts that the manufacturer's get in addition to the absolutely astronomical development costs, it is becoming industry standard for games to need to sell 1 million units to BREAK EVEN.

In case you haven't noticed, many of the small and medium sized developers and publishers are having a VERY hard time just staying afloat. I know $60 seems expensive, but $100 million dollar movies have no barrier to entry (owning hardware), and have revenue in theaters, DVD, Blu-Ray, downloads and television that can last for decades.

Modern games essentially have a 3 week window of shelf space to sell whatever they need to make a profit...then that is it. View

"It doesn't have Master Chief ?
and they are labeling it halo?"

Yet people on this site adamantly defend the idea of the potential of the next MGS not including snake.

Do something new!
Metal gear is somewhat "bogged down" with the confines of the universe and the story and whatnot. Even a new protagonist/arc is still going to have a lot of "baggage" to lug around.

I want to see Kojima tackle something COMPLETELY new, with no preconceived notions or history to take into account. I just feel MGS is weighing him down at this point, and I want to see what he can do with his talent applied to a blank canvas.

Sitcoms try and go out on a high note...so should MGS View
