A step forward for consoles
This is great news.

As far as I know a lot of videos now use Xvid, which requires separate codecs to DivX, I wonder what the chances of that being included too? As Xvid is free hopefully it will follow soon after.

Edit: I've been told Xvid will work. View

On GameRankings Munch averaged 79%, Stranger 87%. They were still very enjoyable but the gameplay obviously changes a fair bit compared to the originals. If even fans didn't buy them the games never stood a chance ;)

In principle I'd agree with you on 2D vs 3D - the latter should only be used when it adds something to the game - but as Mario has proven it can work well in both, and Oddworld was no exception.

The Oddworld series suffered from being too odd, and although this goes down well with knowledgeable gamers and critics, it often doesn't translate into good sales figures. View

They released Munch's Oddysee and Stranger's Wrath on the Xbox but sales were not great.

Or maybe you mean another 2D game, as the 3D ones played rather differently. View

What happens when you combine the best unit in C&C Red Alert with the Mario soundtrack? One awesome video!

Excellent game
I would think this would only be playable for those with HDTVs as in SupCom it's necessary to see a lot of details. There are so many units and because of the zooming you typically view it from further afield than C&C3.

The PC version was largely overlooked by everyone but the hardcore gamers because of system requirements and learning curve. At first it seems slow paced and boring but it's one of the deepest multiplayer games available. I hope this gets the mainstream love it deserves. View

Old but essential viewing
The band is called Press Play On Tape - "The Commodore 64 Revival Band".

Video in question is the Cannon Fodder theme tune with special guest Jon Hare from the legendary Sensible Software.

On their homepage (www.pressplayontape.com) you can see other videos. One of my favourites is an excellent live performance of the Monkey Island theme tune. View

Agreed
This is an important issue. Despite games advancing graphically the storytelling aspect across the various platforms is largely underdeveloped and doesn't match the standard of the gameplay. Stories seem to be low on the priority list, behind the likes of gameplay and graphics, but for games to really compete with films we need greater investment in high quality scripts and plot. So many games today have predictable stories and although some gems do exist there are a lot of generic stories around.

When we look back over the years the most memorable games, such as Final Fantasy VII, are those with real investment in the storylines. Although I enjoyed Gears of War I can't even remember the ending, and the dialogue throughout was unimaginative and these detracted from its long term contribution to gaming.

There are some games like Mario, to which a story isn't necessary, but we still need more high quality involving story driven games. At the very least we deserve a decent ending! View

Indeed, the article is not as cut and dry as first appears..
It should be taken as what was said in the conversation, not as the official outcome. It's only when someone listens to the recording that they realise the situation with that guy's dusty console isn't over. This is explained (albeit vaguely) at the end of the article as we still need an official response from Sony so this situation doesn't happen again. View

It's sad that parts of the media are making the problem sound worse than it is. Since the reported problems with the 360 people have been too quick to jump at every problem someone claims to have with their console.

I know one person who is nearly into double figures for their Xbox 360, and a handful of others who had to get a replacement unit. I've had my problems with it too, although I've not had to send it back yet. Whereas I don't know anyone personally who has experienced any hardware issue with their PS3.

I guess my point is that the criticism of the 360's reliability is justified. Hardware problems should only be given widespread coverage once they are proven not to be a one off incident. View

Supreme Commander was an excellent game if you have powerful PC. There is a lot of criticism about the heights this game aims for and whilst it means many people won't be able to play the game it's no reason to mark it down. SupCom remains well ahead of its time and is far more realistic, deep and impressive compared to C&C3 if you're willing to give it a chance.

I can't wait till Forged Alliance comes out in the UK, but I fear there won't be enough hours in the day to get the most out of it. View

Can someone confirm the RAR file is legit? I.e. contains what is stated AND scanned for malicious code.

As a general rule you should never download archives unless it's from an official or trusted source. View

Content is good but why do they only show 2 paragraphs per page? Talk about increasing page impressions artificially.

Mr Robot is a good indie game, there's quite a few out these days. It's a shame they're largely restricted to the PC but hopefully PSN and XBL Arcade start to become more viable options for those without a budget. View

I have the original
The idea is interesting and at first I enjoyed the GP2X. But unless you're happy only playing retro games illegally there's no point in getting it. Music playback is pointless because of the poor battery life and it was too underpowered to handle high quality Xvid without lowering the filesize (Xvid support is a great addition but useless as few people have the time to re-encode their videos).

Why the new version has AA batteries is beyond me. It is the most annoying thing having to try and get them out of the machine after a few hours of play. I bought high quality rechargables and a charger and it still runs out of battery far too quickly.

The other issue I have with the GP2X is they promised new games but the only main one was Payback which is the biggest GTA ripoff I've ever played. It was clearly a one man bedroom effort and although it's an achievement for what it is there was no ambition to add anything GTA didn't already do.

I'm still really surprised they've not ran into more problems regarding the emulator legality. View

Capt CHAOS - I was referring specifically about when the interface slides in from the left. It isn't bad as such but isn't as smooth as it could be when the 360 is using all of its resources in 720p mode. Performing tasks like signing in takes just long enough to be a chore.

I've had the 360 since launch and think the PS3 interface is more responsive, but I sympathise for those who had the PS3 since launch and expect improvements by now. View

Their #1 priority is to ensure their updates are of high quality and don't make the interface unresponsive. Every time you press the Xbox 360 button the interface is jerky and it's not a pleasant experience. It could be Sony are trying to make sure the feature is perfect, otherwise everyone would be complaining because of that too.

Nevertheless 1 year is quite a long time! View

PC gaming will live on as long as people use PCs. Even if you look outside of the hardcore gaming scene it is just very convenient for someone to have a few games around. So many people use PCs on a daily basis but aren't into games enough to warrant getting a dedicated console.

Long term PC gaming will face increasing challenges:
- Could suffer if games continue to require increasingly good hardware, but people stop upgrading because they're happy with the OS. - The rise in Ubuntu and Leopard is going to cause developers even more problems as time goes on. If it gets to the stage where Windows doesn't have such a big share then they will have to develop 3 versions.

Like it or not PC gaming sales aren't as high as that of consoles, but the upside is the development costs are much lower, which is why you see many small outfits releasing games on the format. View

Suffice to say most TV shows should stay where they are and not venture into our consoles.

Eastenders is probably going to be one of the worst games ever if they give you missions involing Mark Fowler trying to sell all the apples before Peggy gives you an ear bashing.

The only hope they have is if they allow people to set up their own episodes, write the script and share them with others. That model would work with most TV shows. View

A small step for Sony, an even smaller step for gamers.
labelling it 2.0 is a mistake, it would have been better saved for something bigger, but after all it is just a number. Maybe they're saving the big stuff for 3.0.

It's a small step but one in the right direction. At least the PSP guys will be fairly happy.

What I'd really like is Xvid and DivX support. View

I've been really enjoying Tekken so far, this will add another dimension.

Wonder if Tekken 6 will have online play as standard? View

The Xbox 360 really needs that hardware update.. despite the likes of BioShock it's hard to recommend one to a friend when the reliability and noise is such an issue. Every time I play it I worry it will stop working.

There's no mention of the Wii in the original post (is there no doubt one should have one?) but both the Wii and PS3 look like great long term buys in terms of reliability. Right now there are not many good games to warrant a PS3 purchase right away.

I'd probably recommend to someone wanting a console to buy a Wii now, then reconsider PS3 vs 360 in a year's time. By then HD-DVD vs Blu-ray may be more of a factor and I think PS3 might have the edge as it's all built in. View
