PC vs Mac - Open your eyes
44 days 23 hours ago | by: Kakkoii

These days I can't go a week without seeing some site claiming of Mac's superiority. But what exactly makes it so superior to a PC?

Some may claim that it has less virus's, is more stable, better built, better looking and some other, more ridiculous claims....

So let's take a look at some of these claims. (I'll try to keep it short, but it's hard with this type of topic.)

Virus's

This is one of the most claimed things. Less virus's. But how true is this?

Well it is true to a certain extent. Yes Mac has less virus's. But do you happen to know why?

The reason can be seen by simply looking at the market share between Windows and Mac. Windows is used by more then 80% of computer users. Which makes it the prime target of hackers and other people looking to do harm to you or your computer. This is the main reason why Windows has so many more virus problems then Mac. Due to it's popularity it's the prime target.

So, if in some twist of fate, Mac had been the prime OS people used all these years. It would be safe to bet that Mac would have just as much virus issues as Windows.

There are many claims of the expenses people pay to bring there computers in to be ridden of virus's. But virus's are your own fault for not being educated. And paying to have virus's removed is also due to being uneducated in the subject. Your being scammed if you do that, It's one of the biggest scam business's in the industry. Those places have been known to tell people they have more problems then they really do, thus grabbing more money out of peoples wallets. All you really need to do is download some anti-virus programs and run them. Cause I can assure you that's all those places are doing when you bring it in. And I would advise not going on so many porn sites or installing things from websites you just found. Cause that's where most of the virus's come from. Make sure to search around about a program before installing it.

People complain about AD-WARE. Mac has Ad-ware also. Like I've said before. Windows has more because of it's popularity. More ad-ware is produced towards Windows. That's a plain fact. So if you want to get rid of it. Download Spy-bot Search & Destroy.

More Stable

Every time I see a story talking about how Mac is better. I usually see a poster claiming of there friends or parents getting the dreaded Blue Screen of death...

Now.. I don't know what kind of overzealous illegal file downloading and porn surfing these people are doing. But in my 11 years or Windows use. I have never had the blue screen of death. And I do a TON of files downloading, Installed tons of programs many of which were very shady. And on the subject of porn... Well lets just say that if there was a profession for porn surfing. I would be one of the richest people on earth.

If the blue screen of death was such an issue. There would be a lot more stories about it. Just like all the stories about the XBOX 360's RROD problems.

Many people may not know this, but Mac's have there own so called Blue screen's of death. There's just a lot less coverage about them due to such a lower percent of the computer community using Mac's. So a lot less chances of Mac problems to be reported and a lot less things around to cause those problems.

Now onto the crashing of the OS. Mac user's will claim of Window's being a OS that constantly crashes and hangs. But why is this? Well.. Because there is some truth behind it. But the main reason why Window's crashes for many people is that they are uneducated about things they install. Many users will blindly install something not knowing whether it's safe or not. And can lead to an unstable system.

So the Problem with Windows is not the OS itself. But uneducated users. Windows is built to give freedom to it's users. But with freedom one must also take responsibility for there actions and know what they are doing. So it's not that the Mac is a whole lot more stable, but that there's more security restrictions put in place to keep uneducated people from doing something bad.

Better Built

Ahh.. Better built. How exactly is a Mac better built?

It isn't. This is one of the biggest reasons I prefer PC over Mac's. FREEDOM.

Apple forces you to buy a whole new computer if you want to upgrade your computer to play the latest game, or run the newest generation of software smoothly. Because you can't buy new parts, open up a Mac and stick new parts in. They make you pay a huge amount of money for a new computer. It's a marketing strategy. And it brings in a lot of money for big ol' Steve Jobs.

But with a PC. As technology advances, so does your computer. You do not have to buy a whole new computer. Games get better? Order a newer graphics card that's compatible with your motherboard and pop it in. Newer software? Buy a newer CPU that uses the same socket as your motherboard. Want to be an extreme gamer? Buy a new power source, motherboard, ram, gpu, cpu, cooling and all for a lot cheaper then buying a whole new computer. (A simple Google search will guide you on how to put those parts together. And find the best price to performance parts.)

If something goes wrong with your PC. Your able to take parts out to find out what's wrong and replace those parts with ease. And not have to get a whole new computer.

So PC's are better built and more future proof. If only Apple would adopt this kind of open hardware thinking.

Cost

For a lot of people. This is one of the biggest driving factors of what to choose. Because not everyone's a gamer right? So when your not a gamer. Then Windows doesn't have to be the likely choice.

So the average consumer is looking for a new computer. They want something to compose music or artwork on. Or maybe they just want one to surf the internet. With that intention, they are looking for something cheap that will get the job done.

They will be told usually that a Mac is better for them in that situation. But that is not true either.

Firstly, If you were to look for a Mac and a PC that had the same Technical specifications. The Mac would cost more. So right off the bat, Mac is down 1 point for being more expensive.

Secondly, for the average user Windows is more simplistic and easier to learn. And has a lot more to offer in terms of programs for music or art production and for surfing the internet and using the computer for your every day tasks.

Thirdly, even when your warranty runs out on your computer. If it stops working, that doesn't mean you need a whole new computer. You merely need to replace a part in your computer. And most parts for an average consumers PC are fairly cheap. Unlike a Mac where you would have to buy a new Mac if you had no warranty left. Or pay a hefty fee to have it looked at and fixed, ON TOP of the expensive cost to replace the broken custom made parts.

PC will always be cheaper for the average consumer. Even with the cost of buying Vista with it.

If you just want a computer to surf the internet. Then you can find some VERY cheap PC's that will do the job.

Gaming

Do I even need to say anything?

Windows is the platform you'll want to use if your a Gamer. That's a strong fact. Since AT LEAST 90% of computer games are made for Windows platform. And you have the freedom to upgrade parts in your computer over the years to keep up with the fastly growing game technology.

Crapware

Many of the recent stories talk about all the supposed "crapware" that Windows OS's come with. And with overzealous Mac fanboy's claiming that it's very hard to uninstall them. But in reality, it's not very hard to uninstall the extras that a Windows OS comes with. And if your ever stumped. A simple Google search will always bring a fix for your problem.

In most cases all it takes is a trip to the Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and clicking the Uninstall button on the "crapware" you don't want. And if that doesn't work. I'm sure a quick Google search will fix any issues you have. It's almost always as simple as that. With even some programs out there made specifically to remove the crapware that comes with an OS after you install it.

Conclusion

This post is getting a little long so I should end it. Basically, I see no reason for anyone to really use Mac if your already using Windows. Since PC's are the majority. And a large majority at that. So if you want your freedom and you want to get the most out of your experiences on a computer. Then the PC will be the best choice for you.

If I was to compare Mac to something. I would compare it to South Korea. In such that it tries to restrict it's user's to what it wants and control what there aloud to do.

And Windows is like Amsterdam. Your free to do a lot more. But if you don't know what your doing you could get to high and run your car off a cliff :) Or catch a virus ;).

* I will put my love for XP to the side for a minute and say that. I do not think that Mac's are horrible. I think that the Operating systems they use are built very well. But that they can't reach there potential due to how everything is marketed. (Closed Hardware, Closed Software, Tighter holds on what you do. More expensive.)

If Mac's used the same kind of IDEALS that Window's uses. The same kind of Open Freedom. And ran on PC's just like Windows.. Then I would actually love to dual boot a Mac OS on my PC. And would hope for more games to be developed for it. But until that day comes. PC will always be better.*

Side Notes:
I've been seeing way to much Fanboyism for Mac these day's due to the way Vista has been going. As if they've been waiting for Microsoft to trip so they could make there attack. They've been over exaggerating things to the extreme these days. Yes Vista is a bit of a blunder right now. But it's not as bad as the media is making it out to be. Win XP was pretty bad when it first came out also. But with time it improved. One of the main reasons I think Vista is doing bad, is that it's come to early. It takes to much resources for current technology. On a price/performance type scale. It would have had a better reception in maybe 2010 or 2012. But much of it is Microsoft's own fault to. They should have found a way to improve on XP but still make money. Like an Update that cost's money. Windows XP2! XD.

Me personally, I'm still staying with Windows XP for a good few years. Since I use a PC. I can just upgrade my parts if I need more performance for new games.(Unlike Mac..cough) I have no need for Vista. And with Microsoft's upcoming SP3 update for XP. It brings some added performance to your computer :). (Try the beta you'll see.)

Sorry for any subjects I've left out. But there's just so much to talk about that my ADD/Dislexic mind just couldn't handle it lol. And also sorry if I come off as a little fanboyish myself toward Windows XP. It's hard to keep ones own feelings out of what there writing.

(When I say "fanboy" I just mean a person who lets there own love for what they use get in the way of the truth.)

Mac OS = Linux for dumb (or rich/snobby) people

I can't think of a single use that I would rather have a Mac than a PC/Linux.

3.1 - Lots of mac owners are angry
And w/ reason. I would be too if I shelled out that much to do everything that a PC that costs half as much can do. Or the fact that I can get build a great gaming rig for the cost of an Apple tower. The cost/benefit of macs compared to PC's is horrible.

4 - Open my eyes?!?!
I switched to mac almost 7 years ago and I have been very satisfied with my computers. Not being a PC gamer I think makes a difference at how you look at a Mac. I just want a computer that I can use hassle free, have all the apps I want and need, and just work as advertised. I have not been disappointed with it since I switched over: It has no viruses, is very stable, is well built, is sensibly priced (maybe not so much ten years ago, but today it's true), and the software that is included with my mac is excellent. Once again I state that as a non-gamer, I believe that my approach to this topic might be difference but regardless, I love my mac.

5 - Macs are way easier
to use and do not require the constant coddling anything that MS touches needs. I don't like playing games on computers so for a purely enjoyment of use standpoint, Macs freaking rule.

6 - Whover wrote this doesnt have his eyes open
chances are the author of this opinion, simply uses his computer for web browsing and writing shoddy articles. When you do complex things like render video in HD or better or render 3D or work with huge raw images, the stability and speed of a mac cant be beat. Even if you are a common person looking for stable worry free photo and video, mac is your answer...

I was a die hard Windows user, and I am the head of visual effects for a major design house. I think my girlfriend put it best when she said " I love that you moved to mac, you spend less time fixing it and more time working, that means you have more time for me." Though I dont see girlfriend time as an asset... I do have to say everything this "author" picked to argue about, is simply what makes mac great. I also agree with the Linux users, but there simply isnt software support yet.

Mac is the easiest, most stable, and worry free combination of hardware and software available. Trust me, the success of my company is partially due to the apple "platform"... and we dont have / need an IT department.

Lol, ok there buddy.

I do a lot more on my computer then just those things.

I do hi-quality work in Photoshop CS3. Rendering in 3dsmax. I am converting videos of many different formats all the time. I'm Torrenting almost 24/7. Installing and uninstalling tons of programs. I do coding. I do overclocking. I surf porn with a passion and a lot more.

I put my computer threw the trials constantly. And it has never failed me.

Windows XP Professional ftw.

6.2 - Didnt mean to flame you horribly..
Look, I know you do more than that... sorry to belittle you...

I was commenting more on the fact that I tax my Apple computers very hard in example... 12 mo ++ running, no down time rendering Maya 3d scenes, 1080p HD or film rendering. I too LOVE porn, and browse it at home on my mac. All of this and I dont need an IT department to keep things running or deploy new software etc.

I am simply stating that it offers worry free operation at the extreme usage levels I require.. so for the common person it is about as worry free as you can get.

im also not saying its security is as tight as a chastity belt on a virgin, but regardless of user base, it's more secure than any windows install I have ever seen / used.

8 - Not everyone WANTS to fiddle with their computer all the time.
I see where both sides of this debate are coming from, the PC guys call the MAC users elitist tools who don't know a usb port from a hole in the ground and the MAC guys call the PC users elitist pricks who scoff at those without "leet" skillz on building and maintaining PCs.

Think about this, if I buy a car that is known for reliability and ease of ownership because I know I am not a good mechanic and don't like fixing cars does that make me a car "noob" or automobile elitist prick?

PC users, if you or someone you know/care about don't like working on cars and in turn own a reliable one that doesn't give you lots of trouble, how can you turn up your noses at those of us who don't like working on computers?

I am not advocating computer illiteracy but not everyone wants to compete in a PC speed building competition at GenCon.

Both Macs and PCs are different interfaces with their respective pros and cons. Everyone has their own preferences, and no one should state one is better than the other because, at the end of the day all they are is opinions. (In other words, go with the OS you like and shut up).

I agree 100% with this post. I find macs very complicated and annoying. I bought a mac laptop 2 years ago.. kept it for a week and had to call apple and return the damn thing back.. Its very annoying. The reason I got it is because it looked good thats about it. Then I realized what mistake i made, fortunately it was not too late.

12 - It's Subjective.
I'm pretty sure this whole argument really depends on how computer capable you are, and what you want to use your computer for. People who are very computer literate, and maybe even understand command line/computer coding will appreciate the benefits of linux and it's advanced customization for example. Where as someone who wishes to merely browse the internet/access email, and doesn't want to work on their computer, will be content with a mac.

I agree with the author only on 2 points - **hardware** customization that the PC brings about, and the gaming advantages with Windows (which is dying out to gaming consols anyway)

Coming from a user who owns both Mac and Windows, I can confirm based on my own experience that Mac is more secure/stable than PC. I mean, I can use my Mac during the time I have to kill fixing Windows; that's probably saying something right there. Mac and Linux are unix based, which is much more secure from viruses than the Windows kernel. And both Linux and Mac are going in the direction of tightening down code - making it faster, and more stable, where as windows is become bloated; remaining unsecure, sluggish, and is less compatible with older programs/hardware (Vista anyone? seriously???)

I only use windows for games (dual boot with linux). I jumped the windows ship a long time ago.

@ original poster:

I have used Macs and all styles of Unix / Linux....and needless to say...they are FAR more of a pleasure to use than ugly and brash Windows.

The only point that is valid is gaming. If you want a proper gaming machine, you at least need Windows XP. You really can't argue that.

But for everything else, I have Ubuntu with Compiz Fusion dual-booted, so I'm set =)

the only people who say Macs suck are the ones too broke to afford one, a "good" computer for tech savvy people will cost AT LEAST $1000 (anything less is for people who dont use their computers too much for media/programs etc.) the new iMac costs 1200 and people act like that's mega expensive........ this is the same with the iPhone, the only people who say it sucks are the ones who cant afford them

window vista is probably the worst developed and marketed piece of software ever. and this is to coincide with leopard, which is the finest os apple has ever produced. i'm guessing the author of this piece does realize that all intel based mac does run windows and not vice versa. regarding games: i made the move to PS3 (i would never touch MS product ever again) and never looked back. if i were to equate PC to a country- it would have to be some war torn middle eastern country. total chaos. while mac would have to be some scandinavian country. there's a reason why apple chose to have complete control over the production of both hardware and software: it guarantees a productive environment. i don't like to fiddle with my computer (with windows, i had no choice). I like to switch my computer on and go straight to work: on my macbook pro, boot up takes less than a minute. i also have to add that i have not seen a better looking laptop than than a macbook pro. the sony comes close but still no cigars.
