BUT the PS3 is catching up on the worldwide basis.
Now, Western developers can forget about the Japanese market, because Japanese don't buy/play Western games in general.
The same holds true for Japanese developer - most Western consumers are moving away from buying/playing Japanese games, and the market for Japanese games are shrinking in the West.
The gap in taste between Western and Japanese gamers are getting bigger and bigger.
So, it does not matter if the PS3 is outselling Xbox 360 in Japan.
A while ago, I posted a question in BioWare forum and asked them if they'd ever make games for the PS3 because the PS3 will have a bigger market than Xbox 360 in Japan. Here's how one BioWare employee replied to my curiosity, it goes something like this: "It does not matter how well the PS3 is doing in Japan. Japanese don't buy Western games anyway. We don't have a market there. So we don't base our platform decision on Japanese sales and market shares. Whatever market shares the PS3 can grab in Japan is basically meaningless to us or any Western developer/publisher for that matter."
