Mods are nazi fascist scum.
76 days 15 hours ago | by: robbiedillona

As a forum grows, it is highly likely you will need additional help when it comes to moderation. Even if your members are fantastically well behaved, moderators are useful to have as they are a reassuring, visible presence in your community. They help encourage conversations and are a reflection of the care and attention you pay to your site. It is important to choose the right members to become forum moderators.

Unfortunately though, even the best people can turn out to be wholly unsuitable, act inappropriately or get drunk on power.

When forum moderators go bad

Before taking any action at all, you need to consider whether your moderator really has gone bad. Did you issue them with guidelines on what you expect from them before giving them the position? If not, how can they be acting incorrectly if they have not been told how to act in the first place?!?

A rogue forum moderator can do your community untold damage. Every moderator of your site is a reflection of you – your professionalism, your dedication, your commitment. One bad forum moderator can ruin both your reputation and that of your site; therefore, you need to take decisive action when dealing with a rogue moderator.

How should you react?

This all depends on the problem you are having with the staff member in question. If the problem at hand is relatively minor, for example they are deleting/moving/editing threads that you feel should have been left alone, simply speak to your moderator privately and make your concerns clear.

Remain calm, professional, friendly and approachable. Use examples, and explain why you disagree with their actions. Don’t exaggerate, don’t generalise and don’t attack your staff member. Remember – the chances are, they are working for you absolutely free of charge. This in itself demands a certain level of respect from the outset.

The following example email/private message to a moderator is wholly inappropriate and should never be sent:

You keep on deleting loads of threads, and moving every post you don’t like. If you don’t stop doing this, you aren’t going to be a moderator on the site anymore. Either change your ways, or you are gone.

Instead, your message should be something along the following lines:

Hi (Insert Moderator’s Name)

I noticed that you moved the following thread (Insert URL) – may I ask why you felt this was necessary? I also noticed that you deleted posts on the following thread (Insert URL) although I think they were OK to stay . I am a little confused as to why you took action against these threads and posts and would appreciate you taking the time to fill me in on your reasoning.

Thanks!

(Your Name)

The second example ensures a constructive dialogue with your moderator. You have kept to the facts, used examples and explained why you are contacting them. Remember, to get the best out of your forum moderators you need to communicate with them. This includes making them aware of any mistakes you feel they are making. Unless you communicate, your moderator will never learn what is considered acceptable within your community.

How to react if your forum moderator completely loses the plot

Of course, the time may come when a staff member abuses their position to such an extent that more immediate and direct action needs to be taken. I would immediately remove staff logins for any moderators that become abusive or publish any member’s personal information, for example.

Should I need to take such action, the moderator login would immediately be disabled to prevent such behaviour continuing, and a message would be sent to the moderator explaining my actions.

In a future article I will write about the process of firing a forum moderator – although the need to do this shouldn’t come around, if the worst happens you need to do it properly and professionally.

Your thoughts

Have you had to warn or take action against any of your forum moderators? How did you do it? Did your moderator improve as a result, or did you have to let them go? Share your thoughts, ideas and experiences by leaving a comment

1.1 - Why does it matter what picture he chooses?
It's supposed to represents (how I see it) what he feels the moderators are like I suppose, but I don't see why that should matter.

But to be honest I haven't encountered that problem, I have seen it happen on a few occasions but so ever so rarely, but if this is a problem then indeed it does prove problematic and perhaps other moderators(reliable) should be informed of this so propper action could be taken.

The moderators on N4G are way to easy on the fanboys. As it is now the gamer zone is just as fanboy ridden as the open zone. Less curse words but the same mentality. It's like they've given up.

Couple of examples of what I mean.

This last one just to give you an idea of how the PS3/360 fanboy ratio looks on N4G. Check agree/disagree. This is the gamer zone, mind you.

PS3 has the best games.

"best" is so subjective, though. if you like FPS, shooters and Multiplayer, 360 has it hands down. If you like more innovative, single player games, then I'll say PS3 has it covered.

I look at the comment section on N4G I die a little inside. In the past 2 weeks I have been called a PS3 fanboy (for acknowledging that GT PSP had double the amount of cars that Forza 3 has), and I was called a 360 fanboy SEVERAL times for various reasons (mostly because I called out PS3 fanboys on their hypocrisy especially in terms of sales). I really can't stand 90% of the members on N4G anymore, and even the forums are beginning to be overtaken with fanboys from the mainsite. The times they are a changin'.

@Butterfinger
Indeed, I agree about the forums. Fanboys seem to be taking control of that also.

But the forums are much more heavily moderated. In fact I believe the main site is the only place where flame wars are present.

The Mods are just lazy and inconsistent. I messaged a few of them before and they said that they were to busy to do their mod work. The real problem is the Admin on this site. He's letting this site get out of hand. But I suspect he's not going to do anything since the fanboy wars is what gives this site so many hits. This is a sellout site.

Indeed, they are nazy scum.
The open zone in forza and halo topics are always crawling with trolls that hardly ever get banned.

But if you even dare to criticize a ps3 game (no matter how honest you opinion is), you get shafted to the open zone and you post gets deleted to oblivion.

Everytime someone post he doesnt like gt, the post is deleted in minutes, but at the same time people trolling on Forza or Halo hardly ever get banned/deleted.

My proof is that when my acc was just new, i acted like i owned a ps3 and trew insults at 360 games, my posts never got deleted.
Now that i trow the same insults at ps3 games my posts get deleted all the time.

what a bunch of cry babies.

@Soda. What do you want mods to do?. Control how people think?. Mods are not perfect. Nothing is perfect. All i know is they are fair most of the time. That to me is enough.

would think they are "fair". He is a PS3 fanboy, like the majority of the people associated with this site. lmao. Biased opinions really don't matter to anyone in here.

10 - wonders if the people who post about so called bad moderators knows of Godwin's law
http://catb.org/jargon/html...

Usenet] “As a Usenet discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one.” There is a tradition in many groups that, once this occurs, that thread is over, and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically lost whatever argument was in progress. Godwin's Law thus practically guarantees the existence of an upper bound on thread length in those groups.

as someone who has been a head moderator at the gotfrag.com forums for over 6 years now i can say that there are times where a heavy hand is needed but for the most part small steps are the approach to take. in every instance whether it be removing posts/threads or banning a user i have striven to inform them as to what they did wrong and use it as a springboard for better forum usage and behaviour in the future.

I just love how some of this sites worst trolls/fanboys are the ones complaining about there being too many opposing fanboys.

I think it is psychologically unhealthy to be so devoted to segregating the gaming community. We do afterall all have the same hobby. What you little kids, and I'm assuming you guys are little kids based off your comments in other threads, need to realise is that because someone voices/has an opinion different to yours doesn't make either of your opinions invalid. However going out of your way to deliberately lie and mis-inform people, or to attack someones opinion without giving clear and intelligent rebutal makes you part of the problem.
