Resident Evil: What's your perspective?

reHorror writes: "The Resident Evil series over the years has grown, branched off and changed in a few directions over the years since its first release back in 1996. Some of these changes have been commended and been thought of as good improvements by newcomers and hardcore Resident Evil fans the world over, but the one area other than story that has probably divided fans more is that of the camera perspective."

I personally didn't enjoy any of the RE movies, except for MJ being in them of course, but one thing that could revitalize the RE game series would be to take at least one aspect from the movies and put it into a game; you, the player, gets to play as one of the bio weapons, one of the test subjects that breaks free of the lab, or is inadvertently set loose instead of always playing as a kind of "investigator" thrown into the fray; it's not like you'd have to be a zombie/mutant thing or anything, just regenerative health, maybe some kind of augmented perceptions and then standard run and gun with a bit more of the old fashioned, close quarters, tension combat stuff..

Res Evil peaked for me with Res Evil 2 (that game was awesome!), Res 3 was enjoyable but just didn't capture the same vibe as Res 2 in my opinion, close, but no cigar.

I liked the Gamecube remakes alot and thought they were outstanding graphically for the time, the story was also solid.

I enjoyed the new gameplay style of Res 4 and thought it was a step in the right direction with the over the shoulder camera but the story had already started to lose what made it so great by then in my opinion (the whole Ganados thing just didn't feel like true Res Evil).

Since then it's lost alot of it's appeal for me, it just feels tainted and the story has lost it's direction. I played the demo of 5 hoping for good things but it just didn't do it for me, i still haven't bothered to pick it up.

For me Dead Space stepped up and took Res Evil's rightful place as the true survival horror king, that game was awesome and the series has lots of potential story wise.

I think Capcom should do a Barry Burton on the Res Evil series now......give it a Magnum round to the head and put it down for good. It's tried to get back up way too many times already.

3 - For the next one......
I think they should combine the new style camera and action elements with the old style horror feel. I would like the next RE game to have a more "spooky" feel. I want to be kept nervous and tense. I want the corridors I walk to be creepy and ominous. These are elements the first game had about right.

I know it's not a RE staple but as we are talking about reinvention I think it would be fun to see a more paranormal/ghost based RE. In fact, thinking about it, did any of you see the "hook man" gameplay from RE 4? I think that nicely sums up the atmosphere and mechanics I would like to see for the next game. In RE 4 I agree it didn't fit but in a new game it might.

IMO, the series ended when Raccoon City got nuked. There was no need for 0, C.V., the Outbreak games and 4 and 5. Those games were basically Capcom milking the franchise.

I hope they don't make another one...but they will. I won't be buying it, though. That being said, Capcom could learn a thing or two from E.A. Redwood.

A little off-topic, but I hope that everyone involved with the RE films die very slow and painfull deaths from cancer and AIDS. Especially Paul W.S. Anderson.
