How petty must you be to adopt HD DVD and then shun HD media when Blu-ray wins?

Because it's your only choice for a physical HD copy of a movie! :-(.. But don't worry, this time Its only 1 choice, AND the format will be out longer than a year! haha!

HD DVD sales have still been pretty strong according to some recent reports because its dirt cheap now and liquidators were buying up stock left and right.

Their are people out their who supported HD DVD but are waiting for either cheaper prices or a better 2.0 player that's not the PS3.

This isn't even beating a dead horse, it's taking a dead horse, hanging it by the ceiling and playing pinata with a barbed wired bat.

I've always been in the Blu, I have a 360 & PS3 so I would always watch the movies that were available for Hd-dvd at the time then watch Blu-ray movies.:)

@ Danja: Their are alternatives, HD VMD, CBHD, etc are all plausible alternatives if someone REALLY wants to avoid Blu Ray.

Ju, that's why he said REALLY. If somebody wants to avoid Blu-ray that badly, they could with a little extra effort than going to your local retailer.

1 reason...HD DVD is dead, gone, mortuus...you don't find HD DVD here in Scandinavia, those sections at any retailer/webstore have been renamed from "HD format" to 'Blu-Ray'

The day Blu-Ray was declared winner it reached news papers, TV, etc...it reached the masses hence the average Joe...before that only 5% of the people knew there was a "HD war" going on...today many of them don't even know there was a format called HD DVD nor care...Blu-Ray = HD for them as you find it anywhere unlike LaserDisc after it came out.

Elvan, yes but why continuely invest your money in an all but obsolete product. What happens when your player dies, what you gonna do with your HD collection then, bin them or sell them for pennies? Better to cut your loses now and adopt BR.

Also, still available in stores? No store I've been in. You cant get any new releases.

My point is that if you want to continue to expand your HD library with future releases, you're going to need to move to Blu-Ray.

Yeah, but at least with a dead horse you get that satisfying squelch. Here you'll just get a plasticy tap, which is no fun at all.

I buy both. I opted for The Ultimate Matrix on HD-DVD because it was half the price of Blu-Ray but the same quality. There are tons of HD-DVD players available and if you are really worried about not finding one if yours breaks, get the Samsung HD-DVD/Blu-Ray combo player. HD-DVD rocks and I can buy movies on the real cheap at inetvideo.com I support both formats.

Look at the Laserdisc market, years after it collapsed it was still a highly collected item, and in many cases it still is today but on a much smaller scale compared to a few years ago.

@ Below: Like I said I own both formats and then some so their is no reason for me to go out and "defend" a format by any means.

Cliffbo: Well said, bubbles for you! And again I have a few formats including Blu Ray and HD DVD. I use my HD DVD player from time to time because their are things on it that probably won't be on Blu Ray for a while or with the slightest possibility, never!

I am a hundred percent with you. I own a ps3 and xbox 360 with hd-dvd add-on. I purchase alot of hd-dvd movies of amazon because they are dirt cheap. When I say dirt cheap I mean five to ten dollars a film. To those of you who say why waste your money your hd-dvd player might die, well I can always by another one for $30 to $50 dollars. Bluray movies are to expensive so I purchase titles that I really want.

WTF are you buying? No good films have released on hd dud since may 08'.

This article must be geared to hardcore xbox fans who are just too "smart" to let go a dead format. LMAO

17 - Funny they mention this
I was looking at Bluray players the other day. I want a brand name unit for no more than 200 bux, anybody know of any?

HD-DVDs tend to look better you know, studios are still not doing reproductions on bluray at the level of quality that HD-DVD had. Until Bluray gets that right more often, I am not spending over 200 bux on a player.

Transformers and Dark knight maybe exceptions, if they are, try to understand that pretty much all HD-DVDs look that good, not just a few big releases here and there, that is why HDDVD fans are slow to give up the format.

no HD DVD and Bluray are the same they use the same Codecs and all but blu ray does have a higher bitrate and hold more information than a HDDVD disk. Personally id know what one id go for

WRONG! HD-DVD and Blu-Ray use the same compression codecs, AVC and VC1.
Shut this user up Let user speak
Mr Marbles - 352 days 16 hours ago
17.3 - I understand
that they use many of the same codecs, but studios do a few things different with many of the bluray releases, you would have to google the details.

If you look at just bluray releases, you will see a difference in picture quality depending on the movie, they do not all look as good as Dark knight, even though they are all bluray and use the same codecs.

Well HD-DVD is the same, its just that a higher percentage of HDDVD releases have the top tier picture quality. Where as quite a few bluray releases have far less than perfect picture quality.

Fanboy Slaughter - 352 days 11 hours ago
18.1 - Sure they can go DD.....
If they wanna pay for things they'll never own, enjoy a pseudo-HD picture with the sound quality of a 96 bitrate MP3, and, depending on their connection, have intermittent hiccups during their movie, creating time for things like, oh, I don't know...getting pissed that their movie has been interrupted?

I know everyone has experienced this a LOT....watching a movie, only to have either: a) the power to go out, or b) get into a phone conversation, resulting in interruption of the movie. Either way, when it's time to watch the rest of the movie, no one is really in the mood to watch it anymore.

And while I expect DD to stick around for a bit, maybe even get better as net connections skyrocket (along with the monthly fee), I don't expect them to become a dominant format. There a certain consumer satisfaction with having a tangible object in their hands when they part ways with their hard-earned money.
