Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 X2 Video Card 100251SR (Benchmark Reviews)

Technology doesn't play favorites, and when it reaches an apex there is an indifference towards who develops it. ATI has learned this lesson the hard way, having watched from the sidelines for so long that most have forgotten that AMD could be a leader in technology. The Radeon HD 4870 X2 is the latest evolution in graphics cards, and ATI has delivered something bigger than we've ever seen before. Benchmark Reviews is fortunate to test the Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 X2 Dual-RV770 GPU video card 100251SR against a collection of todays hottest video cards available.

I'm sorry but this 4870 X2 was rather disappointing. First it failed to edge out the single GPU OC 280 GTX in the Crysis benchmarks and thats a biggie. The second problem is the heat. A single a 4870 is already like opening the gateway to hell on top of your motherboard, the card is dangerously hot. Now with two GPU the card is running at a blistering 90 C and the heat completely unacceptable. That isn't just hot, thats enough to burn the skin off your hand.

nice performance but far from good.

the small fps gain against a gtx280 is kinda disapointing and the watt usage and heat is kinda horrible

Crysis does appear to be the exception with dual-gpu / crossfire/sli cards and performance gains though, according to the vast majority of reviews out there. Still, the heat is excessive...

It's a great card, but the heat output is just so high, you pretty much have to water cool it, but full cover blocks for them cost over 150 dollars right now, ouch. $550-600 plus GPU block + pump + rad = close to a grand to properly cool this card down.
