Pioneer Produces 500GB Blu-ray Disc

The article reports: -

If at first you succeed, just go and raise the bar anyway...

Since seems to be the motto at Pioneer since it has followed up its ground breaking (and potentially Blu-ray compatible) 16 layer 400GB optical disc (below) with a 500GB version less than one month later.

A mammoth 25 layers were jammed onto the disc this time around and it also has the same potential to be made Blu-ray compatible - though whether a disc with the capability to handle around 20+ 1080p flicks has really any use other than as a storage medium is open to some debate (2160p Fuller HD anyone?!).

"While Blu-ray discs (BD), offering both 25GB and 50GB, are sufficient for users' current demands, we envision the need for a technology that can support far greater capacities as HD streaming in particular becomes commonplace and users build larger files of digital content," said Pioneer Multimedia Division Product Manager Brendan Sheridan. "The multi-layered method is compatible with Blu-ray devices providing a long term future for the technology and is more easily produced when compared to competing technologies such as holographic storage."

Sheridan admits the disc is only a research project at present though talks are ongoing with the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) about formalising the standard. Public availability? Between two and four years it claims - though I'm guessing it will take a brave man to risk a 500GB coaster...

Care to tell me where I was being negative?
"is compatible with existing blu-ray players" is what he said, and "potentially Blu-ray compatible" is what the article says.

This has nothing to do with childish my system is better than yours crap. It's about stating false information as fact, but I guess state falls on deaf ears...

But if you wish go through my past comments and find some "anti-PS3" comment. Hell you would even find I already own a PS3... *gasp*

That is a rather sizable disc. It is good to know that if needed, they can produce a disc with that much space.

There's not really much use at the moment, but in the future, it would be amazing for entire TV show series or even movie triologies and a lot of extra features.

However, 500GB discs would be more useful for business level storage instead of consumer use.

Oh they'll still find a way to screw you out of money and make a box for something that could have totally fit on one disc without a sacrifice in quality.

7 - Ultra HD possible?
7,680 × 4,320
4320p?

With this amount of space, Blu Ray might be the first player to support it. If not, then more gaming for the PS3!!!

Whooho!!!

*edit*

My bad, I forgot about how much 4320p takes, not possible maybe for a couple of minutes, but still not possible, still it might grow for it to exceed Ultra HD

I don't think we need much more than 1080p. Considering you have to be sitting about 6 feet from a 50 inch screen and have 20/20 vision to see the full difference between 720p and 1080p i think we are good with 1080p.
Here is a full explanation if you are interested.

The company doing this is Pioneer after all.

The definition of pioneer is: One that originates or helps open up a new line of thought or activity.

18.2 - Now they need to make multiple laser devices.
(This was suppose to be a separate comment not a reply to another user. I apologise)

I've seen this as a problem. 500+ gigabytes is nice but what about having multiple lasers? If the disc speed was kept constant then multiple layers could be read at different locations on the disk increasing the read performance without raising the RPMS. This would significantly increase the price though on the readers.

It seems like having all those layers would cause even more latency if a request requires random reads from multiple layers. This wouldn't be a big problem for movies but fragmented this would require the lenses to realign every time it changes layers. Wouldn't it make sense to have multiple lasers so that two layers or more could be read independently or simultaneously to reduce latancy and low transfers?

Sure current technology might be compatible but it'd probably still be very slow to access it with only one laser, especially if the data is fragmented.

All in all I doubt we've even scratched the surface of what can be done with this storage technology.

I love Pioneer I got a nice Tv from them they truly are the best. Now if we can get some specs and some ideas on how it's going to hold up to scratches then a price things could really get moving. Man are some people going to be pissed when I tell them their 30,000 storage archive was just eclipsed with an expandable medium. I know lots of people wanting to do HD video editing and disk creation yet the data storage is going to be a big problem. Terabytes are used up in a week of editing. It would be nice to store these on permanent disks. I would rather have a hot swappable drive with about 12 of these puppies in there ready to be archived all sealed just incase dust and scratches are a problem. I bet if it is the real deal we will see data center get the first batch.

If this does work on the PS3 then good for them! As long as heavy premiums don't come with it. Pioneer is not cheap and neither is SONY.
