Blu-ray Loses

I was one of the folks who thought that Blu-ray was going to eliminate HD-DVD and by this time HD-DVD would be toast. In fact, I was one of the analysts who helped convince Time Warner to hedge its bets and go with both formats. However, this was all before I knew the cost of the Blu-ray technology, and it was based on the assumption that Sony would never be stupid enough to price itself out of the game console market.

This week, we'll look at why DreamWorks and Paramount backed HD-DVD, effectively assuring that Blu-ray will lose whether HD-DVD wins or not -- and it may still not win either.

PlayStation3 Impact
Not only was Blu-ray too expensive, the technology wasn't as far along as Sony led us to believe. The delays not only make the PS3 too expensive; they made it late. That was effectively a one-two punch, knocking Sony out of the lead so far in the game console business. Now, Sony is dead last by a significant margin.

So instead of the PS3 ensuring Blu-ray's success, right now it appears that Blu-ray may have effectively killed the PS3, at least in terms of market leadership. We'll have to wait until the PS4 before Sony has a chance to come back.

Nobody knows who will win this war. The article thinks it has gone on too long. I think it's too early to call a winner. The article points out that the PS3 isn't selling very well (which is true), and that HD-DVD is cheaper to manufacture.

Blu-Ray has Blockbuster exclusively which I believe is important.

A final note is that HDTV is still new, so the market for HD-DVD/Blu-Ray is not for the masses, yet.

I agree with everything in this article. The PS3 should have come out a year sooner and without Blu-ray at $299. BR is the reason the PS3 is in last place.

I was an early adopter of both DVD Audio and SACD's a few years ago. I watched to see which format would win and knock regular CDs into the land of 8-track tapes. They both lost.

All it would take is for some slickly packaged "iDVD" or something to come along next year and both HD DVD and Blu-ray would be toast overnight.

He raises a lot of very valid points (I'm more of the opinion that both formats will lose) but I don't think one could call blu-ray 'dead'. The point I like from his analysis is the fact that neither of the formats is really selling. Yeah, BR may be beating HD-DVD by a margin of 2-1, but both are ridiculously small potatoes in the movie scene. They've gotta gain traction or they'll both end up the next laser disc.

there will be a HD standard same like B&W TV made the move to color. And then, the format ain't be DVD no more. So...what's it gonna be ? I am pretty sure it won't be laser disk (or maybe it will be a laser disk, a blue laser or not).

IMO, one of the format could have put a DVD on the other side of the disk (I think HD-DVD does that now), which effectively would allow you to play movies in std DVD players as well.

In Australia Blu-ray movies are selling at the rate of 1500 per week, where HD-DVD is selling only 200 per week. There are more stand alone HD-DVD units than Blu-ray units. So the PS3 has to be pushing the sales, there can be no other explanation. Yet Toshiba simply refuses to believe this. They still want to believe PS3 owners only buy games. They are living in fantasy land. And the PS3 is actually selling better than the PS2 did in its first year of launch. So I really can't understand why people keep saying it's "not selling", or "it's dead". The PS3 is down in price, great AAA titles are nearly here, and it's taking market share away from an already crippled 360. It really can't lose.

exactly...he fails to point out Universal making the move to both also...with multiple reports of other studios dropping HD-DVD in light of Blockbusters Blu Ray only...

BD did hurt the PS3 in the short run...that is obvious, being that it has already happen..."if" the games get to the point where they need BD for the best experience (like KZ2's reported 2 gigs in one level, etc...) then it may not hurt the PS3 in the long run, and dare I say...it may help it...

Also, he doesn't point out that Spielberg will continue to support BD over HD DVD...and that his films will be "superior" on BD...and considering that his movies are by far Dreamwork's and sometimes Paramounts biggest grossing films, that takes a lot of steam out of what this guy is saying...

BD's biggest loss this year is Transformers, which will only go to HD DVD in terms of high def...I am interested in seeing how well it sticks...there is still over a month before its rumored release date...and apperantly Michael Bay is flipping out about it...Is Paramount under the impression that people will buy an HDDVD player just for their movies?...are they aware that they are the only big film company that is soley supporting HD DVD now?, except spielberg's stuff...

I don't really know or care enough about this war to determine a winner...its irrelevant...BD isn't going to lose to the point where it is not around...and even if it slips behind HD DVD at some point, that doesn't hurt the PS3 as much as you would think imo...the price will be down regardless, so the PS3 will become cheaper no matter what the outcome of the film industry...and the benefits of BD will always be there for the PS3 (with the price problem quickly going away)...no matter what the squabbling execs in the film industry decide, deves making ps3 games will always have the storage capacity of BD to deal with...which will not hurt anything...

to 7.2 where do you see Universal going neutral? Links please. What other movie companies in HD DVD's camp would go neutral? The only 3 that are exclusive are Universal(anything ever mentioned of this was just FUD), Paramount/Dreamworks (Hello Shrek Franchise, and Star Trek), and the Weinstein Co. WB is already neutral but has released several movies exclusive (Batman Begins, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire(Imported from the UK), Matrix collection, Constantine, and a few others) on HD DVD since that HDi is mandatory on all players. Since BD-J is not implemented yet these titles have not been released They have also stated that they enjoy being neutral.

So out of those 3 "Exclusive" companies which is going to the Blu Ray camp? Paramount/Dreamworks? Not for at least 18 months. Universal? Highly unlikely. Weinstein Company? This could be one that switches, but I haven't read or heard anything to that.

As to the original article what I find interesting is that this analysts didn't do his research to well from the beginning. Most people aren't even interested right now, so it's really a moot point.

Dual Format is the best solution for consumers, and if the timing of mass adoption is a couple of years away, then all that has to happen is for hd-dvd to fight a delaying game and rely on an appreciable amount of sales.

This is the first time I’ve seen the Blu-ray logo on a Tombstone on N4G (the HD DVD logo has been there a few times already).

It’s still way too early to declare anyone the winner or loser. Although I do think that HD DVD is ready for a big surge and Blu-ray has many flaws in concept & manufacturing that could prevent it from gaining market beyond the PS3.

Usually people like this are not hired for their accuracy, rather their ability to "stimulate" or manipulate the market. everyone knows if Sony did not put BD drives in the Ps3, and now have to justify it , as well as developers, sony would be number #1 in this sh#t instead of 3. As of right now. They gave MS the oppotunity, eventhough Ms fumbled a couple of times. They still took it and is now leading.

BD hardware is sitll not ready as HD-DVD is, as far as features and such. I'm sure Sony knew this.

The sale of the Ps3 is not what it could of been. Imagine $400 or less Ps3, it would of been game over. Now they have to cathup to MS, and if MS continues to do well it won't be easy. Even if alot of gamers have Ps2. Plenty Xbox gamers were PS 1/2 owners.

Also the Ps3 was late ofcourse because of the BD issue. coupled with the cell's difficulty of non-traditional programming, we all can see why Sony is behind and playing catchup.

This guy has some gooid points that have been argured in terms of strategy, but we don't know who will win. so disagree with that.

This guy is nuts. It's true that Blu-Ray could lose. Nothing is set in stone. But the PS3 has been on the market for less than a year and has sold over 4 million systems and that's with competition. The 360 sold a little less than 6 million in a year with no competition. How is the PS3 failing. And I don't care what people think, it will be a very long time before digital downloads take over optical discs. Yes it's a viable option but thats all it is, an option. Who would want to sit and download a multiple gig game when there several hundred thousand or more people trying to do the same. It's frustrating enough to download a 800mb demo when everybody else doing it. I love being able to download games and music and such but I don't want it to be the primary source for me at least not in the near future.

The format war is still very much in the air, with Blu-ray having a edge in Studio support (even with Paramount being paid by HDDVD) but HDDVD has the better price point on the stand alone players.

Wallmart has plenty of Blu-ray discs for sale, in fact the 3 Wallmarts around me have a little more Blu-ray than HDDVD (not a lot lot more, but more). Blockbuster is exclusive to Blu-ray now and the Blockbuster near me is currently expanding their Blu-ray section by about 5x (from approx. 3 ft of wall to 15 ft)

One thing will never change. People want to buy a movie and have something to show for it like a disk and case. For both formats to get popular its going to be a few years for movie prices to go down. If i remember correctly dvds were quite expensive and dvd players at first were pretty expensive.

So we kinda do have to wait a while to see what happens.

Apparently from what i have heard, HDDVD has more features(if someone could explain the differences in features please do and don't be a fanboy about it).

But Bluray has more space.

Video and audio wise they seem to basically be the same, if any difference its probably minor.

I can't say I agree with this article at all. The author makes a lot of assumptions and predictions. Personally, I prefer to deal with the facts as they stand. Is it a blow that Paramount went from neutral to HD DVD exclusive? Yes. But the situation remains unclear.

Blu-ray has been outselling HD DVD for whatever reason for a long time now. Their is a swing in its favor and despite losing a studio it has a lot going for it. Here are a few things:

1) I used to work at a video store. My experience in my years there were that people would consistantly ask for a) horror movies and b) kids/family movies. Blu-ray has the monopoly of the latter category with Disney being an exclusive partner.

2) The PS3 is a strength. Despite what the author here believes, 5 million PS3's worldwide adds a lot of support to Blu-ray. I have friends and co-workers that have purchased a PS3 and all have amassed fair Blu-ray collections. I'm confident this wouldn't be so (yet) if not for the PS3. Some own XBox 360's and Wii's as well, if HD DVD were included in either their movie purchasing habits may have been different.

3) Storage. Again the author of this article comes off as an amateur. He talks about how Blu-ray is not a viable storage option comparing it to an internal HDD. For convenience purposes it certainly is viable, I don't want to be pulling out my internal HDD everytime I want to transfer/share large files with family and friends. Also, it should be noted that he calls the disk 25GB and almost unknowingly doesn't mention the dual layer options that double the capacity.

...and finally:

4) Advertising. I have seen numerous ads that are either a) Blu-ray promotions or b) mention Blu-ray in someway. Honestly yesterday my uncle asked what I thought of Blu-ray. I gave a few thoughts of how I haven't adopted it because of HD DVD. After I explained a little he told me he had never heard of HD DVD. There is something to be said about a catchy name.

PS fanbase to speed up the adoption of Bluray. They knew being second on the market that they would stand no chance of beating toshiba. Toshiba had a year headstart and a huge pricepoint advantage. However, one format can beat the other. This is a showdown, or a battle of pride, at this point.

This Christams, HD DVD will stomp Blu-Ray - no doubt about it. Blu-Ray has Spider-Man 3 and Pirates 3, but it will still cost much more than HD DVD in terms of players and the movies themselves. The lower price, and the Paramount deal will make waves. Transformers will help out HD DVD in conjunction with a price drop on the players, and Sony can't match both.

If I were Toshiba, here is what I would do:

Since Toshiba has started using payoffs just like Sony has, Toshiba needs to get with Paramount and universal and work out an arrangement (payoff) to stop putting their movies on DVD format completely. Instead, what they need to do is put all of their movies on an HD DVD/DVD combo disc at an affordable price, which I would say should be about $20/movie. They won't make a fortune on movie sales, but they will make something. Right now, all they are trying to do is secure the market, and this would do it. Basically, Blockbuster would have to crawl out from under the table and rent HD DVD movies because Transformers, Shrek, etc would only be available on combo disc. Also, when people want Transformers to watch in their DVD players, they will get "trojan horsed" with the HD DVD version because it is simply printed on the other side of the disc. Once people build a nice library of HD DVD/DVD combo movies, they will be inclined to purchase an HD DVD player.

What would this do statistically for Toshiba?

1 - It would instantly crush Blu-Ray disc sales in comparison. Toshiba could count all movie sales as legitimate HD DVD movie sales... much in the same way the Sony crowd likes to call PS3 sales legitimate Blu-Ray movie player sales. Yet again, give them a taste of their own medicine.
2 - It would provide a nice transition from DVD. People don't have to make the plunge into an entirely new format.
3 - Transformers HD DVD/DVD combo disc would sell 25 million copies on its first day of release.
4 - Blockbuster would rent Transformers, lol. so, they have to rent HD DVD discs at this point. After all, their customers will want to see Transformers.
5 - It would build studio confidence any sway the likes of Disney and Fox within weeks.
6 - Win. Format war will be over with instantly, Sony would probably try to sue, but lose.

What would Sony do?

1 - Nothing. Blu-Ray movies are incapable of doing a combo format, so they would instantly be knocked out of the competition.
2 - Die. They would die a very fast, yet painful death.

They're not even that much different. It's not nearly the leap in technology from VHS to DVD. It's a nonsense format war fueled by the fact that the PS3 was bundled with a blu-ray player.

Of course 360 is being outsold by PS3 in Japan - it's Japan. If you can watch cartoon porn on it, they'll buy it. Case in point, PS3. Also, Japanese people hate American products that are competing with their own. Unfortunately Americans, for the most part, lack the capacity to return the favor.

As far as being outsold in the rest of the world, use your head a little. The 360 has been out for about 2 years now. It's sales are going to drop because most people who want one already own one. The PS3 on the other hand has only been out for about 1 year, so people are still buying it. They are called early adopters. PS3 will stop selling after 2 years all together. I could make the argument you are making with car sales. For example, I could say:

After this christmas...it will all be over...there is no way HD-DVD will sale over 4 million HD-DVD players in the next 6 months to 1 year....PS3 is almost at 5 million and there are over 300k standalone bluray players...and more comming out soon to be sold. PS3 will sale at least 3 to 4 million in the next 6 months to early march 2008....There will be another price drop of the PS3...and there will be sub $300 bluray players before christmas.

The paramount deal is only for 18 months.

As mentioned before... it is irrelevant for whom he works and he does bring up some interesting points. However, I would have to say that the only people going to lose are the consumers in this war between HD and BR. I personally prefer Bluray and have been on that bandwagon since its launch. I like what it is capable of and what it has the potential to do. Sure, the tech is expensive...but so is the HDDVD side. No new technology is cheap (at first)... but I am willing (and have) to whip out the extra cash for the state of the art. Right now... I think of the major consumer market of HDDVD and Bluray as a niche market since everyone can't afford it and some will never be able to. I was quite happy with DVD's until I stepped up my arsenal of equipment to include BR and HDDVD and WILL NEVER go back to regular dvds entirely. As for the movie companies deciding sides...they are crazy.... I refuse to buy HDDVD movies and I am sure that there are some that like HDDVD that feel the same way... am I missing out much...no...not as long as my console will upconvert the regular DVDs to semi-HD quality. I gave away my HDDVD player because I do believe Bluray is stronger in potential.
As far as the PS3 goes... I was never a PS1/PS2 fan.... still not really... but I have been nothing but impressed with my PS3 (granted, the ports from games made first for the 360 are crappy because developers don't take the time to redo the software to take full advantage of the PS3). I actually play it more than my 360 now. For those who say it was overpriced....maybe a little...after all...it is all new hardware....and you get what you pay for....

Now Microsoft is threating Linux vendors, accusing Linux vendors of stealing code, but they REFUSE to say what code. They tried this with SCO, and it failed. So, it will be interesting to see what MS tries to do next with NO evidence, and post SCO failure.

So MS is actually requesting Linux vendors to buy vouchers from Microsoft, for Linux distributions, to guarantee that MS will not sue them. Sounds like extortion. This will end up biting MS again as well.

this is a gaming site, not a video format site. my ps3 plays blue-ray, your nintendo ds plays on cartridge, in the end its just another format to play games on. even if sony's blue ray failed it wouldnt effect my having fun with warhawk or final fantasy 13.

on the otherhand, when they have to cut stuff out of a game because theres not enough space (ff7 on n64, and DOA4 and some other games) then theres a prob. but aslong as i can play my games with no problem, then i dont care.

i bought my ps3/ps2/GC/xbox/psp to play games, not watch movies, which im sure thats why you guys bought them aswell

Take notice of the charts, and you'll see 360's sales have declined while PS3's are improving. Probably because more people are aware of 360's defects now. And another point! O.K., external hard drives are getting bigger and cheaper, blah, blah. But exactly how much data are you going to stream into those things, eventually you're going to run out of space. How many hard drives are you going to buy? Blu-ray is by far the most convenient storage medium. Especially when they release the 200GB version. And 360 owners don't work overtime, because they are too busy taking their 360 to and from the repair shop!
