Intel Confirms 'Larrabee' First Half 2010; No Delay

TH: "Guru3D noted in its story that Intel's Joseph Schultz said Larrabee was pushed back from its original target, but we spoke to Intel to get the full story.

"There is no delay. We always said it would launch in the 2009/2010 timeframe," an Intel representative told Tom's Hardware. "We are narrowing that timeframe to the 1st half of 2010."

"Larrabee is healthy and in our labs right now," added the representative. "There will be multiple versions of Larrabee over time. We are not releasing additional details at this time." "

Gonna be interesting when this comes out. Based on the specs, I can't really see how this will be anything near amazing. But it looks interesting none the less, can't wait!

SuperSaiyan45458d ago

Especially when hit with a billion dollar law suit lol

AMD FTW!!

Kakkoii5458d ago

A billion dollars is a drop in the bucket for Intel. Plus they are pretty much done designing the chips. So they are pretty much in the clear with this one.

Ah, then we'll see the PS4 at the end of 2010 or somewhere in 2011 with the Larrabee GPU, as they want to be earlier then Microsoft with their next gen console this time around.

And they use more standard stuff this time around, because their gambles with the PS3 hardware don't pay off.

TOO PAWNED5458d ago

Gamble? CELL 2.0 or what ever will be used in PS4 that is 99% for sure, PS4 was rumored that it is going to have Larrabee GPU. CELL is CPU. Only gamble PS3 did was with BluRay, they won but it costed them a ton of money, which they will return in the long run

Foxgod5458d ago (Edited 5458d ago )

They can put the larrabee in the ps4.
Hopefully the next xbox will feature something like an I7 with a powerfull GPU along it.

Larrabee is for people who cant afford a decent gpu and a decent cpu.
Or for people who are content with running windows 7, and just using it for internet.

Oh,and for the fritzl up there, Larrabee is a CPU with Gpu capabilities, if Sony uses it as a GPU then the ps4 will be weaksauce.

Mr Fancy Pants5458d ago (Edited 5458d ago )

Mjum, and from where did you get this info eh Mart? Tell us.

Last time I checked Sony's always the only company that supports their console for so long. In 2010 the PS2 will still be living in the wild! While the X360 will be burning houses because M$ can't even get their console's problems fixed... What a shame.

the X720 can't come any sooner! I want to see the next-gen RRoD!!!! lol

edit:

"Intel spoke at the at the opening of Saarland University's Visual Computing Institute and revealed that Larrabee uses 32 processor cores and mates each of these with its own vector math unit, according to Guru3D."

Holy mother of god!!! 32 cores running at only god knows what speed! That equals 64 procedures without even using its main CPU. I mean, this is something that we'll need to see to believe!

Imagine each core running at 6.0GHZ! Whoa! This is the most impressive part: "...each of these with its own vector math unit...".

ZuperAmazingCooKie5458d ago

An 8-core Larrabee @ 3.2Ghz is, according to the benchmarks, as powerful as a 360 (i.e. as powerful as the combination of its CPU and GPU). If Sony uses a 32-core Larrabee as a GPU (25 cores have already been achieved) and a 32-core Cell 2.0 as a CPU, I don't see the problem, as long as they keep the OS to a size minimum and make all of the memory XDR2 RAM to avoid bottlenecks, all running at the same clock speed.

4-times the CPU, 4-times the current gen console GPU, 4 times the memory, 4-times the disc space (8x layered BD) and 4 times the speed of reading the disc (at least), except everything being more efficient and more standard or known by the industry. I doubt Sony will go higher than that as they got burned this gen by going a few dozens of times higher than last. They may focus on other innovations, such as using "smell" for games, among other things, that would be better if they want a runnaway Wii success and still not alienate the hardcore.

In the end CPU and GPU specs won't matter because cloud gaming will probably take off. Perhaps a PS4 won't be needed as PS3 has 1 Gigabit Ethernet connection capabilities, so the rumored PS Cloud could even debut on PS3. That would make sense and would eliminate the need to ever upgrade, the upgrades would be on the server side and we would continually see Sony and Microsoft raise the graphics bar instead of every 5-years.

Foxgod5458d ago

First 32 core processor will be out in 2016, max cores in a cpu right now is 4.

ZuperAmazingCooKie5457d ago

And there are also 25-core Larrabee prototypes running. Wikipedia, which has many sources, backs me up.

You say that because... ? Oh that's right, you're FoxGod. Nevermind.

Wasn't Larabee motherboard been rumored for PS4 or something like that?
Actually it was GPU
http://www.i4u.com/article2...

micro_invader5458d ago

From what I know the larrabee is a hybrid between a CPU and GPU, so you wouldn't really call it a GPU, more like a CPGPU?

Anyway, I don't know anything about it being used in the PS4, I'd like to see how it performs first.

ChickeyCantor5458d ago (Edited 5458d ago )

more like CGPU
Central graphic processor unit
(Central processor grapphic processor unit sounds off don't you think ?XD)

Or HPU
Hybrid processor unit XD

micro_invader5458d ago

Indeed it does sound wierd :p

In fact, I think your suggestion was the actual name(read it in an article somewhere.)

N4g_null5457d ago

sidar are you still programming? If so you have to read up on this thing now, it's going to be pretty cool though.

Oh yeah it's going to use a different API and a compiler that will let you pretty much vectorize all of your code. Just look up LRBNI ok it's a dream come true, that is the key to it's success right there. I mean you could write a rasterizer in software again that can pretty much keep up with what we have right now. Remember when UT use to run faster in software mode LOL. Oh yeah guess who is already helping...

The multiple version thing leans to this chip being in different flavors, like console flavors also.

divideby05458d ago

the real version of the chip set we really want wont be out until early 2011..

N4g_null5457d ago

Why do you believe that? If intel does not do this right nvidia will eat their lunch and AMD will repo their house with a monster truck.

The stuff they are showing is very cool, but the GPU guys are really really quite about this right now. This is the best kind of competition.
