CES: Sony accused of being like 'crazy ex-girlfriend'

The worst kind of public relations is to attempt to point out the flaws of your competitors, instead of concentrating on promoting your own strengths.

Sony has been shockingly guilty of committing this PR sin at CES 2009, issuing a press release pointing out the weaknesses of Nintendo's Wii and Microsoft's Xbox 360, in comparison with the (admittedly) feature-rich PlayStation 3.

"Sony sent out a press release that attempted to set the tone of the console debate," wrote Wired's gaming correspondent Chris Kohler this week, adding, hilariously: "Apparently this year's tone will be "crazy ex-girlfriend.""

As a matter of fact many of us have been waiting for Sony to at least trumpet the benefits of the PS3 over the competition. That is all that Sony did. They didn't bash anyone, they simply pointed out the benefits without bashing the competition. They even say. "The Xbox 360 and Wii offer a set of features in their own right." how some people think this is negative. This is done in business all the time. Have you ever seen automobile commercials that point out price difference or quality. How about computer commercials(Apple vs. Microsoft anyone?). Even commercials for restaurants. This happens all the time and is an effective way to advertise your product. When I was in sales I always used comparisons. When you are selling a more expensive product you really have to educate the consumer and that is what SONY is doing. It's not like they are making comments about the 360's reliability or the Wii's lack of mature games...

That rumor was blown out of proportion. It was actually true. The original playstation2 could be used as a missile guidance system in crude rockets like the ones used by Hamas.
They had the original chipset removed in the PS2 and replaced with a Pentium 2, which is why the PS2 wasn't as powerful as they said it would be and why it was delayed in everywhere but Japan. The Japanese games were better because of this.

Yet the PS3 which managed 40% growth year over year is subjected to articles saying their doomed because sales in November and December in the midst of an economic crisis were down 10%. I googled and found a couple of sharp bloggers who noticed that MS seemed to be struggling in 2008, but no mainstream media thought this was worth reporting.
The point, as you well know, is that the PS3 can finish up 40%, can show remarkable strides in the US but if they're down 10% one month the gaming media is all over them. Microsoft was down 35% year over year in Sept, 37% in October, had been down almost everywhere all year long and all we were subjected to was articles proclaiming "360 makes huge strides in Japan!" based of one months sales and "360 has best Black Friday Ever!" with nary a mention of the fact that up to that point they were actually down almost 10% year over year in the US. The reporting is not even.

for the 360, you don't need a $100 wifi add on. You need at most a wireless access point and 2 ft. of cable (aproximately 40 bucks). You also wouldn't buy an arcade if you wanted a hard drive. Also, any model you buy today (making the price comparison at least make sense) has HDMI. They inflated the price by ~$150 and didn't account for the fact that you can get at least 2 games with the system now at that price.

For the wii, it only compares points where the PS3 comes out favorably.

How does "2 feet of cable and a wireless access point" equate to "wireless"? WireLESS. As in, no networking wires required from the console. "2 feet of cable" is not that. In fact, it's quite the opposite. All you've described is a 360 wired to a wireless network source. If you wired it to a satellite modem, would you also consider that wireless (within the obvious context MS and Sony intend it)?

I could keep beating down this horse until it's a bloody pulp but I will stop there. You get my point.

In addition, obviously Sony is referring to the 360's official wireless add-on. They can't account for every silly hack users might come up with. Microsoft would publish those same numbers for crying out loud.

By and large the mainstream media IS balanced because its in their interests to appeal to not just one audience or the other but all of them.

The truth of the matter is that the majority of major sites are run for financial reasons - they have advertisers and they need people to go and read them.

Why would they be biased towrds one system or another when they don't need to be? It makes no sense. The bottom line for companies as big as TechRadar (which is run by Future which published both Official Xbox and Official PS3) IS the bottom line. It's not going to be overtly biased towards one thing or another because it makes no economic sense

That might be true, but I know what he is getting at. I love both consoles and I see a few sites that are a little biased for one console or another, but most sites do a very good job of approaching things in a fair way. IGN, for example, I have noticed is a little bit pro-PS3 and a little anti-Microsoft.

So it definitely goes both ways. Microsoft bashing is just as rampant as Sony bashing. Believe me, I have no favor towards one console in particular and I think things are pretty fair all in all.

Fact is, and I'm running out of bubbles here, is that by approaching this release in this way Sony has put itself in a position to be shot at.

And when Microsoft used the GTA IV figures in the way they did they put themselves in a position to be shot at.

And they both got shot at. Ad if you read the comments on both this article and the one i posetd in comments the site (techradar) got accused of bias.

I'm glas Sony got taken to task for this release. And I'm glad MS got taken to task for the GTA IV thing.

The important thing is that people don't get in the mindset that anything that criticises Sony is wrong or vice versa. If people think for themselves then it's fine to say 'I prefer PS3 and I don't like the way Microsoft operate.'

Banks compare rates to other banks in adverts, supermarkets compare prices to other supermarkets on TV, radio and newspapers, especially since the credit crunch situation.

I personally don't see what is so wrong with a 'money grabbing' corperation telling people that a console ready for plug and play is cheaper than a console that needs numberous additions to have the full experience of owning it, therefore spending more money and getting less at retail.

It's better to pay less for more, isn't that right?

Unless you decide buy a 360 for Gears, Halo or Fable, there really isn't any contest between the total price of the PS3 and the 360 and for that you get the all new rage, a Blu-Ray player to boot and you can play about 80% of the games also on the 360 for FREE once plugging in the first time.

If they dangled the chart off of skyscrapers then fairs fair; thats pushing it and they deserve to be ridiculed, they haven't done this and they've found a brilliant way to get free advertising because of articles complaining how 'desperate' they are instead of not putting 2+2 together and not even realising that they have fell for a tactic for Sony to wisely get free advertisment and value of their product as the bloggers get hits.

I view this as no dirty tactic, I see this as a excellent strategy and a fantastic intellegent way to counterract the behavior of Microsoft over the last 3 years or so.

I have to agree with Butterfinger here. The chart is SELECTIVE information, something ALL companies do. They don't lie, and they get their point across. For instance, I see MS leveraging Netflix all the time... which does nothing for the act of gaming, or for me. Do I think it's a bad PR move to bring it up? That's funny, I could of sworn MS stopped supporting XBOX title software emulation like Serious Sam 2 and Oddworld: Strangerers Wraith before Sony, even though MS were'nt losing a penny at the time and instead forcing you to buy them on Live to play them because they no longer patch the BC Emu software in the updates for free which in turn makes you buy bigger expensive harddrives if you don't have a big enough HDD for storing the game files or just have to buy one if you don't have a HDD.

It's already common practice to release your new system while continuing to support your older system. Just because they say that PS3 is on a 10 year life cycle doesn't mean you won't see the PS4 shortly after the competitors release their systems.

I have read all your post and I can honestly say my day at work this friday afternoon was very good.

Sony vs MS , what a battle.. unfortunately they are in a war that Nintendo owns. The HD brothers should be more friends than enemies, you are going after the same market after all. The systems are similar and different gaming experience at the same time but at the end of the day the battle really is for your HD living room space and right now as it stands they are both doing good and they can both live together.

Mine has never given me a problem either, and most of my friends haven't had a problem. I really love both consoles, but I am sick of people exaggerating and being so negative about the 360. It achieves nothing. It only makes people who enjoy their 360s more negative about the PS3.

Ghandi said "an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind", and he was right. Just look at the situation on the Gaza Strip between the Israelis and Palestinians. We need peace in this world, people, and if we can't even have peace in the mundane world of videogames, it is going to be even harder in the larger cultural and political realms. But I know that we will achieve it. More and more people are realizing that it gets us nowhere.

I am actually on my fourth 360. Also, two of my 20GB hard drives failed, the first time with saved games on it (the second one I wasn't willing to risk another piece of sh*t failure so I used a memory card, but why should I even buy one just to prevent myself?), and the second one just with a few demos (rendering the HDD pretty much useless as I could simply rent the game instead and save myself a $100 bucks), so I'm on my third HDD. I also got my copies of Rainbow Six and Just Cause scratched by my 360.

To add insult to injury, the friends that I know that have a 360 (including Ariel, Louie, George, Diego and David) have all gotten the RROD at least once. And then you dumb ass liars dare to come here and say "well I know nobody with rrod and my 360 has been running perfectly", who the hell are you trying to fool? Just because you are trying to fool us into thinking you were that lucky doesn't mean it doesn't happen, use your brains for a sec at least.

And by the way, no console before my 360 had ever failed me and I had NES, SNES, Genesis, PS1, PS2, Gamecube, and N64. Xbox 360 was the first Microsoft console I bought and I have buyers remorse because it's been painful because of how shoddy it is, and an expensive experience because it doesn't include jack sh1t. I had to pay at least $99 bucks for a WiFi add-on (because I'll be damned if Microshaft makes me wire my entire home just to get my console connected), and have already paid 3 years of LIVE. My 360 bought in May 2006 cost me at least $399.99. That doesn't include the fact that I have no HDMI on my 360 (at least the last replacement unit they sent, the fourth one I have, doesn't have HDMI, so lets hope that the next one they send has one)

With my PS3 it was all a single purchase of $599.99 and have been enjoying the hell out of it with not a single issue. I play more games on PS3 than on my 360 because I don't want to risk having another RROD soon. I also installed a 250 GB HDD to my PS3 because on 360 I can't do that for lack of availability, price and compatibility issues (only proprietary HDDs); so my PS3 has become my entertainment center and default console. That doesn't even include all the PS2 and PS1 games I play on it.

If PS3 was a girlfriend, I think it would be considered the best ever since she's open for pretty much anything, anytime and doesn't decide to get sick right in the middle of sex. You guys are in denial if you think the 360 is as reliable or if you think you can do half the things you can do with PS3. Only blind fanboys would defend a defective product.

Another sensationalist article! All that Sony is trying to do is demonstrate the value of their console over the competition and all the media does is label Sony as "Clutching at straws." I think Sony should continue marketing their consoles FEATURES over the compeitition much like other industries.
For example the automotive industry BMW M3 versus Lexus ISF. If you go to either dealership they label the value proposition over the competition, thus making the consumer AWARE OF THE FEATURES that each vehicle has over the other!

Sony should continue by adding Internet browser, home, Life with Playstation, and the ability to spend actual currency versus MS points and Wii whatevers!

They should roll this out as a full marketing plan for the Playstation 3.

Man it's getting ugly at the bottom. I thought the fans would kill off each other own console but it seems like MS and SONY want to fan the fire.

I remember Sega and nintendo fans fighting online pretty hard then they both fell. The fan where still there but nintendo fans wanted sequels to the old snes games and sega fan just wanted some thing cool... Then PS came out and solved every ones problems by combining the two....

Now the same thing is happening. Xbox is the sequel king while the PS3 is selling off being cool because of high tech features. I'm sure it's to other way around for each type of hardcore gamer but this is not going to end well for these guys or companies.

The truth is every one has done this before yet only one company is not even competing this way. Is it because they are no longer a gaming company or are they the only true gaming company in town?

With out 3rd parties both of these systems would be dead in their tracks and we all know they like to jump ship even if the graphics are not capable of doing what they can on more powerful systems. The PS is proof of this along with the nes during the 16 bit PC days.

The last thing for them to try is to sell the system as a electronic component it seems by putting the specs side by side. If SONY truly believed in their games they would put down specs for the other system and then list their exclusives as the reason why their system is better. I'm not 16 any more I don't buy systems off of specs any more. The industry has changed so much and not all of it is good. Developers have so much power now they end up making thesis statements proofs on physics and high end rendering rather than fun games.

The other bad thing is when I did buy console because of specs I bough systems that actually did hardcore games better than the PC. This gen it is not really even close spec wise unless you are cashed strapped which shouldn't be the case if you have a real HDtv with some good tech in it.

I actually thought Sony should have come out and explained to people what they get compared to other companies products for the same ammount of money. I think it's lame how all the media seems to be flipping this into a negative. I haven't read this article, but I've seen the cost break down list and I can't remember if it made note that the 360 has a yearly $50 charge or if they simpily listed it as 50 bucks, like 50 flat, gets you multiplayer. Anyway, car makers have been doing this same thing forever when they offer more for your money.

You do have to admit though that the Ps3 isn't doing as well because their online isn't much. look at the Xbox360, its online community is outstanding, I would pay extra for That, and if your watching Blueray Movies you can definitely afford to buy a Blueray Player. The Ps3 is obsolete and needs to be destroyed. the only thing keeping the Ps3 alive is the fact that that they have games only for their console, like Killzone 2.
