2009: The Year "Red Ring of Death" Died

It was the single biggest issue that could have destroyed Microsoft's hope of being a strong competitor in the gaming industry. In its early days, the Xbox 360 suffered from a number of technical problems that would render the console useless, many of the issues were identified by a series of red flashing lights on the face of the console, with the three red flashing lights" Red Ring of Death" (RROD) being the most infamous. The situation was so bad back in 2005 that the courts almost ordered a recall of the system. But I've noticed something happening, not many are complaining about Xbox 360's shoddy hardware anymore; in fact the internet is so silent about the issue you could hear a pin drop, and with research after research and poll after poll coming out in favor of Microsoft's console, one must wonder, did the RROD plague that almost destroyed the Xbox 360 die in 2009?

This christmas in the UK Modern Warfare 2 holds number one spot after having record-breaking first week sales, crowning it UK's Christmas number 1 game.

Despite the games industry's praise of the PS3's 2009 exclusives, not one managed to reach the top 20 for the week of December 19th, proving to be a huge disappointment.

Gamespot says: We're now getting onto our fifth installment of this feature, and with every passing year the differences between the consoles continue to melt away. When we first started this feature, the differences between some versions of games were astounding. Fight Night Round 3 looked drastically better on the Xbox 360 with its improved lighting and shadowing effects. The following year, the graphics on both platforms got considerably more even--Oblivion even looked better on the PlayStation 3. Every subsequent comparison pretty much ended the same, with the Xbox 360 getting the benefit of slightly higher-resolution textures and other marginal improvements that wouldn't be noticed unless the images were put side by side. We'll see if the trend holds true with some of the best games from this year.

Split-Screen: "Insomniac Games first made a reputation for itself with the Spyro series, before moving onto Ratchet & Clank in the Playstation 2 era. It was only natural that people would associate them with cartoonish games but they stunned everyone with Resistance, a gritty sci-fi FPS with surprising elements of horror incorporated into the creature design. It shouldn't be so surprising that Insomniac's next title would be in the same mature vein but interestingly, they're next effort will be going multi-platform."

Overall, Bayonetta is gorgeous, stylish, entertaining and deliciously unique. To say that it is my favorite action game yet is an understatement. Kamiya and his team at Platinum Games deserve a round of applause (and perhaps a few platonic hugs) for their incredible work on this project. Bayonetta will remind you how cool videogames can be.

Dante's Inferno is EA's attack on the God of War series. The game offers nice visuals - but how well has Visceral Games ported the game to the different consoles? Check out this screenshot comparison between the PS3 and the 360 version of Dante's Inferno.

The uncompressed screenshots have been taken on a professional grabbing system in 720p. The PS3 was set to "Full RGB" and "Superwhite" settings for better comparison purposes.
