Blu-ray 3D Good News, And Very Bad

The bad news concerns the cost of viewing Blu-ray discs. While Sony, Panasonic and LG have all promised they'll have 3D sets available shortly in 2010 (LG says it expects to sell 400,000 3D sets next year), it seems that suitable 3D specs will cost users in the region of $75-$150 each!

The NPD retail reports hit late last week, and with it, the usual brouhaha following the PS3's 'lackluster' performance. This month, the furor was fueled by the fact that Uncharted 2, which topped sales charts in the previous month, failed to make an appearance in the top 20. Allegations were levied against PS3 owners, accusing them of not being real gamers, and not supporting software with their wallets.

The fact of the matter is that this just isn't the case.

The ads seem to suggest that the PS3 allows the player to experience an altered state of reality where the real and the unreal merge. MAG Could Support More Than 256 players – Zipper

"We built a technology that can support a huge number of players - we picked 256 because of gameplay balance, how we divide squads up, etc. But with our infrastructure, we can increase the number of players to beyond even 256 if we wanted to. There are trade-offs that would have to be made, of course, but the technology supports even more players if the need was there. That's why MAG only runs on the PS3 [...] – because the system's SPUs are so powerful that they give us the technical capability to simultaneously run 256 players in the way we do."

It was a big week, as FFXIII sold 1.35m units (1.25m standalone, ~100k bundles), hardware rose across the board, and alot of big older Wii & DS titles saw big rises. Wii, PS3, & DS are near 200k.

CC: It wasn't a total shock when we heard that Crysis 2 would be coming to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, basically because it's going to do well on the PC, and the addition of two huge entertainment systems wasn't going to do it harm. However, it seems the reason that CryTek moved to consoles in the first place, was because of piracy.
