Starting Wednesday evening is the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where hundreds of companies will be showing off new products and stuff they have in the works.

Continuing his role as Bill Gates' opening-speech successor, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is headlining the opening CES keynote Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. He'll be on stage with Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices Division.

So, what in the heck will Microsoft be talking about? Mark Rein showed off a playable Unreal Tournament level running on an iPod Touch to the guys at AnandTech last week as an example of Epic Games' commitment to graphical innovation.

Though Epic has not announced any plans to develop mobile games, Rein hinted that consumers might see a playable UE3 game running on the iPhone and other mobile platforms at CES 2010 next week. Unfortunately the mobile Unreal Engine still requires OpenGL ES 2.0, and thus the only Apple smartphone capable of playing such a game is the latest iPhone 3GS. Rein suggested that developers who paid for an Unreal Development Kit license will have access to the mobile graphics tech in the near future, meaning we may see Unreal Engine games on the iPhone and other platforms (like the Motorola Droid) as early as 2010.

Top 10 Most Anticipated iPhone Games for 2010

Picking the games with the greatest potential in the year ahead is tough. After the huge success of Activision's Guitar Hero series and massive sales from their competitor, Rock Band, both franchises have been expanding at a rapid rate, trying to outperform the opposition. First, the fight was for the handhelds, and both companies took different approaches in bringing their experiences portable, with Activision releasing a peripheral for the Nintendo DS and EA opting for a less complicated route for the PSP Rock Band Unplugged. Now, in a wholly expected move, Electronic Arts has pushed forward with Rock Band, delivering a smaller version to the iPhone for $9.99 - much higher than the average App. However, with 20 songs and a handful of downloadable content (both free and paid), it appears that the company's first foray onto the platform was, indeed, a moderate success.
