Sand box fun or rehashed boredom?
When the first Mercenaries released on the Xbox, I really didn't know what the game was about or what to expect. The game really shocked me! Blowing stuff up has never been so much fun. Mercenaries 2 follows straight in as the previous version. Here is my quick Pro/Con list.

+Pro+

+Blowing stuff up. Almost everything in the world can be destroyed.

+Huge explosions. <Seriously some of the huge bombs are ridiculous>

+Easy to drive vehicles. <Devs should take note of the Helicopter
controls. Not horrible like BF: Bad Company.>

+Guns, vehicles, support, and air strikes are abundant, plentiful, and provide enough variety to destroy buildings, people, and vehicles in multiple ways.

+Plethora of things to do.

+++CO-OP. The game is much more fulfilling playing co-op.

-Cons-

-First and foremost. The stupid chick who runs the operation <she gives you some of your first missions> voice is SUPER annoying. This can be solved by turning off the voices.

-Missions can get redundant and annoying. Example: Take vehicle A which can be blown up from point X to point Y without dying or in so much time. A little more variety would be nice. If your game is based on destruction, why stray away from what makes it fun?

-Tanks controls are kind of clunky.

-Hijacking is lame. <any vehicle>. Devs need to stop with the button sequences.

-Story is lame. <I have skipped all cut scenes after seeing the first couple>

-Airstrikes - Most of the lower tier airstrikes require you to pop smoke to initiate the strike. This can be a pain if you don't have a vehicle or the area is swarmed with enemies. Laser designators should been used for all.

In all the game is pretty damn fun. At least most of the above issues for me, can be fixed in the options menu or just skipped. When it comes to a game like this, I don't need the story and cheesy dialogue. All I need is some big guns and tons of firepower. If you like sandbox game play with a plenty of freedom, you probably want to either rent or buy this game. Personally it was a day one purchase since I enjoyed the first one and co-op is always a blast.
Rating Comments
8.0 Graphics
The graphics are marginally comparable with most next gen games. <besides MGS4>
9.0 Sound
The guns and explosions are really well done. This score would be a 10 had it not been for the voice acting.
9.0 Gameplay
Its a sandbox full of guns, explosions, and firepower. All the things need to make you feel warm and fuzzy inside.
9.0 Fun Factor
The whole world is destructible not much more to say.
8.5 Online
It has CO-OP, but if you join another group they will not allow you to take your purchased items to their game. The other is the Red Ring of mobility. If you get to it before your teammate you got to wait = lame.
8.5
Overall
(out of 10 / not an average)

You give this game far too much credit. The graphics deserve a lot lower since it seems they should have made this a PS2 exclusive. I just can't believe a game that was such a cult favorite sunk so low or their sophmore attempt. Solid review, I just respectfully disagree.

I will take gameplay over graphics any day of the week like I said in my review they are great, but they are not horrible either.

But I respect your opinion.

Good review, I love the game. Only con that is kind of annoying is the smoke grenade thing for air support.

I agree as posted. The menu system for pulling out airstrikes was also tedious.

It sucks cause the more I played the more the game annoyed or pissed me off.

You have no right to judge the story if you didn't at least force yourself to watch all the cutscenes.

At that point right there, your review failed.

Nice try.

You don't need to watch all the cut scenes to know a crappy story when you see one. At that point right there, your comment fails.

Nice try.

Being presumptuous is failure.

Being thorough is not.

You fail for trying to discredit integrity.

Continue sucking at life.

Why would I force myself to watch something dull, mundane, and with horrible voice acting?

The story was so cookie cutter you would be a moron not to have some sort of establishment on what is taking place. Well I guess some people need everything spelled out for them in black and white.

LinuxGuru...the only thing that fails here is your cartoonish way of speaking. I'll keep sucking at life and you keep being an idiot and defending below average games.

You make good points, but your score is too high. This game is repetitive and suffers from a lack of variety. There are way too many bugs that should never make it into any retail release. Mercenaries two deserves no better than a 7.5 and that is probably a stretch. But you are entitled to your opinion.

You make a good point. I probably was a little high with my grade. After beating all of the side missions, I obtained MOAB which was a huge disappointment.

The next to last mission "Battle for Caracas" is a pain in the "A**".

The review was done with about half the game being played. The game is good enough for a rent, but definitely not a buy. Probably going to turn it in and put money down on Brother in Arms.

"The review was done with about half the game being played."

THAT is epic failure.

Your review just lost all credibility right there.

That's called a lack of integrity.

Doesn't matter how sh*tty a game is, you play the WHOLE THING before you are qualified to write a review for it.

You FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL

yea cause EVERY review site plays the game all the way through. If you don't like the review, then move along.

Integrity? It is my personal opinion and no one is paying me for it. You might have a point if this was my job, but it is not. You probably troll a lot though just from the lack of bubbles you have.

Funny thing is I know a lot of your friends and they reside in my shed.

LinuxGuru...how old are you? dachiefsman is absolutely right, plenty of people don't play the entire game before reviewing it. If I am playing a game with broken gameplay I don't need to finish it to know that it is crappy.

good review and i think i might like the game more than you.

1. The smokes for airstrikes thing is fine, it would be too easy if they were all laser designated.

2. The story - you didnt miss much. Guy gets double crossed buy a big dictator who just took control of Venezuela. You are out for revenge and need to do things to find out where he is and kill him.

3. Missions get annoying? - Im at about 70% and i've only done one or two missions like you describe. I found there is a lot more variety than GTA4.

4. I agree with you on the button sequences, but it is good that they are different for each vehicle.

Ignore the LinuxGuru, he doesnt know what he's talking about. I skip all the cut scenes in games, doesnt mean i cant review them. Cut scenes are pointless and annoying in any game, if i want to watch a film i'll get a DVD on the go. Games are for playing not watching
