Resistance 2 PS3

A game that has heart, but ultimately fails what it sets out to do.
Resistance 2 is the sequal to the 2006 best seller Resistane: Fall of Man. You play as the commander Nathan Hale in his fight against the Chimeran forces.

Unlike the first resistance this time you fight along side a group called the Sentinels for most of the game, they are a group of soldiers who are also infected with the Chimeran virus. This is where the problems start to show up, your team is pretty much brain dead, they seem just to stand around and do nothing, for example in the chicago level when you get ambused by an army of grims you pretty much have to face them alone, and its even more aggravating on the higher diifficulty levels. On a positive note the enemy AI is pretty decent.

The story is one of the weakest aspects of the game, it fails to explain what is happing, and why you are doing what your doing. Also their are some noticable plot holes, for example in the beginning where hale is captured and taken, it then blacks out and fast forwards 2 years, but it never says what happens during those two years.

The gunplay in the game can really be alot of fun, most of the weapons are fun to use, and have good hit detection, but this is even hindered by another problem, the fact that you can only carry 2 weapons at any time. This really bothered me the most, why insomniac took out what made the original reistance stand out, I will never know, but because of this decision resistance 2 seems like every other shooter that has been released over the last 2 years. It has also taken away some of the replayability of the campaign.

The graphics are good, the character models and weapons are very detailed and colorful, but the environments are flat and some of the textures would be more at home on the ps2, but on another positive note unlike the first game reistance 2 atleast uses color!

The hands down best part of the game is the multiplayer, it is a ton of fun and is really well thought out, there is only a few maps thought which could be a disappointment, but hopfully isomniac will support it with new map packs at a reasonable price(unlikly). I play this part for hours on end, and one of the things that is strange is the community, every time i've played a ranked game I'm just about always in the top 3 players, I don't know if I'm really good at it or the community is just not there. I also don't understand way after a game is over you can't continue to play with the same group.

The co-op experience ultimalty depends on if your team mates are actually playing the game, but most of the time thery are, and it is fun, but it can get repetitive.

Overall Resistance 2 is not a bad game, but it is disapointing to see all the little stupid mistakes maken in the game that relly hinders the game, but that dosen't change the fact that it can be a lot of fun, and the multiplayer can be fun for hours on end. Definitely worth a play.

1 - My review of your review
You get a letter F for "Failure". First, because you can't even spell, and second, because you contradict yourself. You call the AI "pretty decent" and then you end up saying "AI is MEDICORE" whatever "Medicore" is supposed to mean, I guess it's "mediocre" you are referring to.

I agree that the story failed on some levels, but I thought games were all about "fun", not about storyline. At least that's what Xbox fanboys say. People should make up their mind on what actually matters to them.

IMHO, while the campaign was shorter on R2 than on the first game, the guns were much better and the level design and variety was also much better. It simply missed going deeper on the storyline, focusing more in Hale's life before the game started, and making the game longer. Other than that, I see no more flaws.

I'd give resistance 2 a 8.7

Sorry but your wrong in your assumption the review is wrong. Reviews are subjective. Like it or move on. My impressions and rant: The graphics are not much of an improvement over the first; also the color pallet is way to bright and colorful for a world that is ending. Considering I just switched to a 1080 p TV I expected to be blown away...I wasn't. (I have MGS4, Wipeout HD and Uncharted to show off, however I had higher hopes. Can't wait for Killzone 2 btw.) The story is mediocre at best. I never felt like the world was ending...more like I was in some cartoon with no consequence to my actions. As much as wanted to like Resistance, it fails on so many levels. Controls are for the worse. I didn't know Resistance 2 was imitating Unreal Tournament until I started to play the multiplayer. Everyone is sprinting full speed, running and gunning and you as the player feel like 20 lbs of fluff. Resistance 1 did not have a run option and it felt as though the game was more tactical. Not so in Resistance 2. You shoot first or you die, rinse and repeat; not to mention the best players ONLY use carbines. I don't even know how to explain multiplayer beyond that it is extremely fast and feels unnatural. Collision detection is not very good as well as the maps. Try playing Chicago without squinting; or else turn the brightness on your TV all the way up. I don't mean to rant, however I've had the game a little over a month and can't "force" myself to like it. I am too much of a fan of the first game. I want a story line on par with Resistance. In the first I felt actual despair the Chimara were winning and everyone was dying left and right. The color palette reinforced this gloomy future. I liked being able to carry all weapons, all the time. Made things fun. The problem with Resistance 2 is that it tries too hard to be different from its superior prequel.

Edit: The game is by no means bad. It is not a game everyone will like. For me, the Resistance 2 is too different from its source material and a lot of immersion is simply lacking. I loved finding the intel in the first game, however it wasn't critical to knowing what the heck is going on. In R2, you don't know jack if you don't obtain the intel. If you like shooters along the lines of Unreal and Quake, you might want to take notice. If like straight shooting with a challenge, than R2 is your game.

First of all, at least learn the definition of "assumption" before talking out of your ass. If you knew the definition, then you would have realized that I wasn't "assuming" his opinion is wrong, I was *proving* him wrong. To be more explicit, let's look at an example. First he says:

"On a positive note the enemy AI is pretty decent. "

And he finishes with:

"Downs: Medicore AI"

Anyway if you knew anything mr. blind guy, you'd know that a self-contradicting argument is false because all contradictions are FALSE. Any blantantly false statement or opinion is wrong, if not stupid. Also, if anyone is going to write a review, they should make damn sure they know how to spell. I mean I can tolerate up to 5 spelling mistakes per page, it's understandable, but after reading this I wonder the age or the seriousness of the one who wrote this. No wonder his nickname is "infinate" as opposed to "infinite". I'm not trying to insult the guy, I'm just asking for a little effort if he wants to be taken seriously because this review is poorly written and therefore it fails. The guy has to make up his mind, is it pretty decent? Is it Mediocre? Or is it brain dead? It can't be all three.

The best the argument can strive for is "inconsistent AI", but again, why would any developer make the friendly AI good, so it can kill all the enemies and take the fun out of the game? In fact that kind of happens sometimes, so even if that was his point if would be false because that's not how it happens. Some people should refrain from reviewing a game if they don't have anything original, useful and/or truthful to say.

Oh, and by the way, I feel sorry for your lack of attention to detail, you must have a very short attention span if you felt in a cartoon while playing in Resistance 2 in spite of the destroyed cities, apocalyptic radio broadcasts, heavily mutated humans and degenerating health status of Nathan Hale not to mention your potentially hazardous comrades.

Nevermind that, all it matters is that you didn't put a single bit of attention, you simply sat there running and gunning everything, CONGRATULATIONS. But hey, I guess I am "assuming" you are wrong so I must be wrong. And by your "logic", I guess all opinions have equal weight no matter how wrong, false, fallacious or blatantly stupid not to mention terribly written they are.

Guess what dodo, I don't think we are on the same page. First of all I think you are hypercritical for all the wrong reasons. First of all, no one is getting paid here to write a review. Yet, you come in and strongly disagree...not to mention giving your own review of 8.7. If you are so "right," how about make your own review. I also was quite humored that you found it necessary to comment in both (most recent) Resistance 2 reviews...and once again give your personal review of 8.7. Good...everyone knows R2 is an 8.7 because you say so. You claim to be a English major yet I could spot a couple of run on sentences in your hate filled dribble. Why so serious? Everyone may not use words correctly but that doesn't mean they are unable to make a point. I agree that "decent AI" and "brain dead AI" contradict each other, however they were addressed to 2 different types of AI. One being your allies, and the other being the enemies. Clearly different...dumba@s. In my opinion he was merciful in his review in not driving home the point that all of the enemies are psychic. I think its obvious that the friendly AI is horrible. Oh...and I don't remember being flanked by enemies...they just make a b-line towards you and occasionally take cover. Once again, I don't think you get paid to critique other peoples reviews so lay off on user infinate or anyone else you choose to bully. If you want to duke it out with me, I'm more than happy to exchange words with you. Usually, I don't invest an substantial amount of time in my comments, including rebuttals. However, you my friend, are a douche and no better than anyone on n4g in making a valid opinion. It is a FACT that you take the review too personally. You clearly are wounded others don't agree with you as well. Guess what? I'm making an assumption you have zero social skills. So there. Correct usage of assumption. If for some reason my grammar still fails to impress I guess I'll have to go back and work on it. Kapeesh? Now kindly stfu.

Ok first of all I never said I'm an english major, english is not even my first language, but if even I, a non-anglophone, can spot several major flaws in a piece of written english (all things considered), then there's a definitely problem.

As I said before, I don't mind a few mistakes, but something so blatantly poor should not have been approved in the first place. There are dozens of reviews here at N4G that should *not* have been approved in the first place as they are too fanboyish and/or just poorly made and researched.

Second, I couldn't care less about anyone's review, but since this is a social site and everyone's allowed to give opinions, I gave my opinion on the review. Funny that I may sound personally invested in reviews, I actually am not, but isn't the point of a social website arguing over reviews? And my opinion is that the review failed for the reasons cited.

Third, While review's are opinions, the validity of them can definitely depend on how well written they are; that not only includes grammar or spelling, but how well thought out the argument is, and if there's a contradiction, then how can it be valid? If contradictions are allowed in any review, then any review actually *matters* and I can state whatever the hell I want. Fortunately, that's not the case.

And don't worry, I will review the game as soon as I find enough time. Besides, my 8.7 score isn't an outlier (it's actually the average score on most aggregate score sites) unlike the 7.5 this "infinate" guy just wrote.

I have to agree with some of the points you made. I was really expecting a little more from Resistance 2.

The graphics in Resistance 2 were o.k., but I wasn't that impressed and to me the story in Resistance 1 in some ways was better than Resistance 2's story.

After playing the game for myself, I wonder how in the world IGN gave R2 a 9.5/10.... I would give it a 8/10 or a 8.5/10, but nothing higher than that.

I agree totally. I also don't think that the multi-player is as good as some people make it out to be. I bought the game, beat it, then I played the multi-player for 2 weeks and I was done. I just don't see the allure.

It needed more development time.

The graphics are great in some instances and very, very poor in others. In parts it reminded me of Haze in terms of graphics and lameness (not that I've played Haze mind you).

You're 100% correct about the story and the 2 weapons thing. Also I don't think there were enough new innovative weapons - the best ones there were still the bullseye and the auger.

The friendly AI wasn't THAT bad, it's just that sometimes they were invincible and kept standing out in the open getting shot, whilst not really shooting back.
