Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots PS3

A flawed masterpiece? Or a really pretty mess?
This review contains Spoilers.

I come to this review as a lifelong fan of the Metal Gear Solid series, I am not a 'fanboy' as I have always tried to see through mass opinion and hype and am the first to point out any games problems.

From the moment I first played the first Metal Gear Solid, I could sense I was onto something special. The writing may have been a tad melodramatic at times but the sheer scope of the game, the intrigue and memorable characters have cemented this as a truly magnificent game in gamers minds.

The second felt like a huge step up for me and while it has its fair share of detractors, I felt that MGS2 moved even closer to that level of involving narrative only seen in novels, films and a few TV shows.

The third may have superficially felt more like an homage to James Bond films, it still is a favorite of mine due to the incredible writing of The Boss and Naked Snakes relationship. Also it was refreshing to see a woman in a video game as impressive and badass as any of her male counterparts without resorting to 'teh boobz'

I realize I haven't even spoken about MGS4 yet, I have a point I'm getting at its just I had to lay down this groundwork of what makes the MGS series so damned impressive before I could make any clear points about the game.

To be perfectly honest, I'm disappointed with this game. So many things were wrong with it. From the overabundance of cameos from past characters, the terrible and culturally arrogant Americanization of the entire world (Yeah South American rebels don't usually sound like Frat Boys) to the severely misused BATB unit.

The odd thing is I still love this game, I suppose a mix of my past history with the series, the brilliant and diverse gameplay and that the cut scenes that were good, were very very good. I just think Kojima played it way too safe and then went insane.

I realize its easier to comment on Cold War politics now then current events but it made the game world feel very superficial. Having no Militiamen (or women, have they never seen anything on South American warfare?) as characters to anchor why people are doing what they're doing made it very hard to care. I suppose that may have been the point, but it hasn't been done in any prior MGS and it didn't work.

The interactivity between gameplay and narrative wasn't pushed as promised (A note to Ryan Payton, INTERACTIVE CUTSCENES!111 does not just mean pressing 'X' occasionally) A friend of mine came across the innovative idea that while fighting the beauty forms of the BATB Unit, a brilliant device were to have their touch initiate a lucid flashback, allowing you to live out the horrors of their past and truly making us empathize. A phone call from Drebin just doesn't cut it.

To be honest the first 3 acts, problems aside are pretty solidly (ha) done and despite the occasional 'FATE IS YUR DESTINYYY' outburst from Naomi, nothing soured too much.

Act 4 and 5 however seem to quickly descend into self-parody. If it isn't NANOMACHINES filling in every single plot hole with quicksand, its a ridiculous overreaction from Otacon to Naomi's death (Stockholm Syndrome induced love for Captor = justifiable, Estranged sister = definitely understandable, random woman you banged a few days ago = not so much).

Snake defeats not-Liquid, Liquid (seriously I think Kojima just gave up at this point and let fanfiction writers finish the script) and we're treated to a Spielberg-enriched ending cinematic where Meryl gets married(!), Raiden somehow gets his human body back and acquires an annoying son (yeah the Rosemary-Campbell relationship is a lot more interesting then the unneeded resolution) and Snake kills himself.

ONLY he doesn't and Big Boss is alive for some reason. I honestly didn't know how to react when the credits rolled, halfway torn between amusement and sadness at this supremely silly ending to a fantastic franchise.

I realize this was more of an essay then a review but it seems that no-one is making a measured assessment of this game. It is neither the second coming of Christ nor the videogame equivalent of Cancer. Like most things its somewhere in between. However I think because of the series supreme quality, its hard not to be very harsh when talking of it. I did really enjoy it and would recommend it to anyone with a passing interest in action games.

This isn't a review, this is just a massive spoiler written by a troll.
Besides, IF you had played it, you would know that they aren't the "BATB Unit" but the BB Corps - even if you didn't get the name the first time, they tell you so often you have to remember at least that much.

FAILURE.

I take it that you played this on solid normal? Go play on boss extreme, then tell me how you feel about the boss fights and Outer Haven. And this review sucks, it's not even a review.

I call them BATB unit, so? I only have a PS3 you know, as I only really like whats coming out on it, check my comments if you must be pedantic about it. I have Lightning as my avatar for crying out loud!

I did *like* the game but it is not perfect and the story is nowhere near as well made as the other three games. Seriously, 'nanomachines did it' isn't writing. You can disagree with me of course but I think that if you can't properly critique even things you like, you just become a mindless sheep.

Actually WIIIS1 if you read his past comments, and notice that he has a ps3 tag you can see he's most likely not a troll unlike you. Also notice how he went into some semi detail about the actual story, which I just don't think he got in the slightest. For one it was AI not nanomachines orchestrating it.

Another thing is his overall score doesn't really add up, and is far too extreme.

Oh look, the biggest fanboy has made his grand appearance.

He'll start telling you what aspects of the game you have to cover in your review, what score to give and how giving anything less than perfection for MGS4 is unprofessional (ooh he edited that out). He's also a master in deciphering from your review whether you own a PS3. Apparently, he also doesn't understand what is meant by "not an average".

4.4 - Fanboy? Another case of the pot calling the kettle black.
Hey genius all those scores are what you base the overall score on because those are the aspects of the game you're rating. I don't know where 7.5 came from especially fans of the series would take into consideration that MGO is just a bonus.

5 - I admit The first thing I thought was "Xbot", but I respect your opinion
However, your review is (relatively) well written, and while I disagree on the score as most people and reviewers, you have your right to have a preference. I respect your opinion on that one, but I would also like to know your opinion on games like Splinter Cell, Halo, Gears of War, Uncharted, what are your favorite genres and games, etcetera just to get a good grip about your preferences in order to know how to judge your review.

I admit that my score may seem a bit extreme, but I'm one of those strange people who believe 5 should be average! All these 9's meaning quite good just confuses me to be honest, whatever happened to moderation?

I'm not a fanboy at all, but I haven't really played many 360 games so I can't comment with any truthfulness about Halo or Gears of War. I do love Uncharted however and see it as how a game can tell a story well (its obvious they got professional screenwriters on board).

I think that MGS4 could have had been spectacular if Kojima had only gotten some screenwriters on board to help him, but he probably would have thought it would be ruining his vision.

In response to Closing: thanks for not being crazy about things but I did understand the story. I know that the patriot A.I's were pulling the worlds puppet strings (which I liked, as I did in MGS2) but a lot of the gaps in the story I felt were filled in with nanomachines and other random sillyness.

What gaps? Nanomachines are a reality, and there's no reason why any of that didn't fit in the story. I will agree about one thing though. I wouldn't have had that whole over dramatic Otacon scene as you mentioned. That part was the only thing that seemed too over the top. The rest of the oddball stuff easily fit into the series. The only other thing Kojima could have done is had Snake pull the trigger so you hear the gun go off, but then when it comes back to the last scene Big Boss step in, and knocks the gun away so he can explain everything, and the very last scene is Snake looking down at the gun so you can speculate on your own what happened. But all of that is small fries when compared to everything that was pulled off masterfully.

I'd give it a 9.9 as it's as close to perfection as it gets.

I know a lot about nanomachines, I use them in my writing from time to time XD.

But I believe that Kojima had a problem that was hard to rectify. He had all of this stuff going on relating to three different stories and he tried to successfully converge them all at once to make the final chapter and then, to paste over any cracks that would inevitably occur, he uses nanomachines.

I personally think the game would have been better without Vamp, Raiden, Rosemary, Big Boss and Campbell, perhaps even EVA. It made the game cluttered in my opinion. A sort of Metal Gear Raiden or another chapter in Snakes story dealing with them might have made it work. Or if this game was twice as long.

8 hours of story was more than enough time to cover everyone, and it's not like the other games didn't have that many characters. Also I still have no clue what you're talking about nanomachines covering the cracks. That really makes no sense at all since technology, and nanomachines have always been an integral part of the series, and everything made perfect sense as to why they were there. To each his own; however, I can not agree in the slightest with those statements.

Other games may have had that many characters, but a lot of characters who needed much more time didn't get it. I mean for example, what on earth was Vamps motivation for following Ocelot? Assuming he didn't know he was actually Ocelot and not Liquid, I suppose it could be revenge against The Patriots, or the fact he wanted to die (it seemed) but it wasn't really explained very well, I'm just assuming.

Vamp turned up for no real reason, it felt like a random cameo, a great disservice to his character I thought, as Vamp was one of my favorites from MGS2.

Nanomachines always came into the previous games, but they were always one part of larger plot points (for example Raidens nanomachines transmitting his details to the patriots, Olga's deal) you can't rest almost everything on one thing, it makes suspending your disbelief really hard. But I guess I'm like that (the force in Star Wars also irks me considerably).

5.7 - Some food for thought.
Vamp simply follows commands, which is his role. He lives for battle, and wanted nothing more than to die an honorable death on the battlefield. Nothing more needs to be said.

Everything about the nanomachines seemed extremely plausible in theory. Their main purpose to the story was to show how technology just like biology spreads(like the cycle Big Boss was talking about how "0 will become 100.") and works its way into every aspect imaginable, and that it's something to be mindful, and careful with. In the other installments besides MGS2 fear of a Nuclear Threat was a main theme, but for the timeframe of MGS4, which is 2014, nanomachines, and AI will have become bigger issues as we can feel that already. MGS saga has always had strong roots in Si-Fi so none of this is beyond suspension of disbelief in the slightest. Just like when you say you were urked by The Force in Star Wars would be no different from saying you were urked by Magic in Final "Fantasy." I really do think you're quite off.

Anywho my bubbles are up.

this game deserves a 7.5, no more. in fact, if it wasn't for the story and the solid presentation, it wouldn't even get that. in terms of game play, it's a side note. it feels like something they just tact on at the end. First play through i beat it on Big Boss hard and i've never played another metal gear before. It was just an incredibly easy, boring game. the only change was the boss fights, and they were just a pain (not to be confused with hard)... they were just very mechanical.

I enjoyed the game, but it's nothing special.

Let the disagrees fly.

decent review.

I only take issue with your complain of the ending. I thought the reintroduction of Big Boss was the climax of the entire series and brought the game to a settling resolution.

I think people try to take this game to seriously and observe things to literally because the game and the story are all works of fiction and not at all based in reality, but rather, substitute the history of the fictitious universe with a template that is our own.

Edit: nevermind. Just read some of your replies and it seems all the characters, metaphors, concepts and reasonings just went straight over your head. I think you are trying to observe things to deeply because I found the MGS series to be very shallow in the execution of it's story. It's not hard or complicated at all to grasp, people just make it so.

12 - I don't get this at all
you score everything from a 10 to an 8. With the online being a 7. Then you give the whole game a 7.5. Then you say you don't like handing out 10's and feel a 5 is average. Yet you gave the game a 10/9/8.5/8 for its separate parts.

You may not have liked where the story went, but that should reflect more so in your scoring of the single parts. You understand your "single parts" aren't equaling your "whole" right?

13 - Decent review but...
Flawed by your overall score. Sorry, but I would believe your review to be more accurate if you had given it a 8 or an 8.5 since you feel that 5 is average but since you dipped too far bellow the average of your scores together I have to say that it was a let down. Sorry, but if you were a true fan to the series you would have been able to grasp the many concepts in the game but your picking it apart for some key elements leads me to believe that you simply ran through the other games and left little to the memory of the stories.

This is all I have to say, anyone that gives MGS4 under a 9.0/10 is a Xbox 360 fanboy or just isn't a fan of the Metal Gear Solid series. I mean, even Gamespot gave MGS4 a 10/10 and that says a LOT because everyone knows how hard they can be on games, especially PS3 games. MGS4 is as close to perfection as it gets and a 7.5/10 for a game as good as MGS4 just isn't even relevant, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion... even if their opinion is really dumb and is nonsense like this review score.

Personally I would give MGS4 a 9.5/10.

You must not be good at math.

10+9+8.5+8+7= 8.5

Unless you meant to put 7.5 which would make no sense to the review. Why would you praise a game, giving the score leading up to what is considered a decent(8.5)but then give it a random score of 7.5. which some view as less than average.

Either you don't get the process of a review and are biased, or it was all a simple mistake, but to me your opinion is'nt right.

Is if you give way TOO MUCH weight to the online mode.

I mean seriously, if you don't give too much weight to the game, how do you expect the "Overall 7.5" to be consistent with this:
