Resistance: Fall of Man PS3

"We never learned exactly what happened there, all we know is Nathan Hale was the sole survivor
If I said Resistance: Fall of Man didn’t remind me of Killzone, I would be a filthy liar. Both feature a basic storyline, a typical combat system, and predictable gameplay. Both have that grey, gritty style of play that’s been done so many times before, and both were hyped beyond belief. Great games in their own respect, but both miserably failed because of in-game mistakes and crushing blows by competition. Like Killzone, Resistance never reaches the coveted legendary status that other First Person Shooters have, before them.

Resistance: Fall of Man sets you 1950’s alternate history England, where WWII never happened. Alien creatures known only as Chimeras have plowed through Europe, and have begun there assault on Britain. You are Nathan Hale of the United States Army Rangers, sent to help liberate England.

The interesting story is quickly quashed by long exasperating cut scenes that are very prominent in the early goings. With odd narration and overall dull cinematics, Resistance slits its own throat early.

Once the game starts, it’s easy to be fooled by the lighting effects and bright colours, as very little is offered in terms of substance. The lighting effects are good, but some objects, like structures, have an odd look about them, and the sky and ground both have an unnatural look to them with no real reflections or lifelike appearances.

Characters on the other hand were a mixed bag. Fellow humans had the ‘same old’ look to them like in other shooters, but the Chimera and most other enemies, were visually impressive. The only problem I have with the Chimera, visually, is that they lack variety. And while were on the subject of ‘same old’, Resistance takes the path most taken and favours quantity over quality. I can see every bullet that whizzes past my head, yet textures seem non-existent in this pre-pubescent female world.

A huge variety of weapons and easy-to-use controls will seem natural, if not monotonous, to seasoned FPS players.

I’ll make a point of not mentioning the audio within this game as it was neither here nor there but absolutely expected.

Maybe it’s because I usually play so much online multiplayer that makes me so critical of it, but like some of today’s other shooters, I found the online multiplayer aspect to be hollow, bland, and quite pointless. The variation in terms of characters, levels, and weapons is there, but I just couldn’t hook myself on because of the linear, repetitive play.

The online play boasts games that allow up to 40 people to join at once, something PSN clearly shows capable of. While I personally didn’t enjoy the multiplayer, I will give credit where its due as Resistance has a solid party system and top notch clan system, something a lot off online shooters can learn from.

There are some features such as unlockable weapons which can prolong the game, but in the end I didn’t find much longevity within this game. Although the singleplayer campaign was much longer than standard.

For aiming too high and not landing anywhere near the stars, Resistance: Fall of Man finds itself among fellow average shooters, but a high-quality launch game nonetheless. With far from the top graphics and nothing audio, this game tries its best to compete against giants, yet numbers fail to be mightier than caliber.

I probably would give this game a similar score if I reviewed it now, however at launch it probably deserved at least another 1 point overall, the joys of hindsight.

1.1 - name a BETTER launch title.
the ONLY one i can think of is MARIO64.

@toughname.

it`s starting to seem like you don`t like anything except HALO.

later.

for a launch title 7.2 is a joke.

1.2 - I agree
But because User Reviews weren't around back then, I'm not making exceptions. I held this game to the same standard I did for PDZ.

Montoya - I gave credit...two separate times for being a solid launch title. And no, I believe Halo 3 is only my 4th or 5th highest rated game.

NOTE
I guess the system is still a little buggy. I know there are a couple letters in the review which I didn't write, and the quote at the top.

As much as I enjoyed the game at launch, I'm inclined to agree.

I loved the chimeara, and they were an interesting enemy and the game is well put together and all that stuff you said.

My problem is that it wasn't "memorable".

The music wasn't epic, the set pieces weren't as impressive or big as they could have been.

It's things that can be improved in the sequel. And I hope they do.

Resistance is nowhere near as good as sony fanboys make it out to be, it was the only decent launch title for ps3. Either RFOM, MS or a bunch of crappy multiplatform games.

I agree with this review. While Resistance was good launch FPS it falls behind Halo or Condemned for being the perfect launch FPS (imo).

My biggest disappointment with Resistance was the length of the levels in the game. I wanted to explore the environment more, not just mow down enemy AI. I would still recommend buying Resistance as it is a solid FPS I just hope in the sequel the levels are longer.

While your review touches on most of the good and all of the bad aspects of the game...you still fall into the same category that most professional reviews of this game did...which is...you claim to 'give credit where credit is due'...and then refuse to do it...and leave the better aspects of the game with a 'I still didnt' care for it'...

I also have no clue why so many focus on Resistance having an 'identity crisis'...you didn't use that exactly...you said 'a pre-pubescent female world'...which makes zero sense to me, and is marginally gross (what are you getting at?...the game is hairless or something?...The game is awkward and waits for the arrival of breasts?...pervert)...The environments where absolutely huge...with nothing static, everything was moving (fog, trees/bushes, grass, the clouds, all rendered as far as you could see with a sniper scope)...the art direction was impressive, especially in terms of the chimeran architecture (real world buildings changed by chimeran pipes and spires sticking out of them)...yet many people throw out the ghey art student card with "what exactly where they trying to accomplish"...what the hell does that mean?...get a different major...

The lighting, like you said, is very dated though...It was not really dynamic...and was criticized on the same level as UE3 games because of it...both games use some bizarre tricks to give the appearance of dynamic lighting at times, but fall relatively short in other areas...UE3 made heavy use of blurring and bloom lighting to take your focus away from the fact that shadows were not changing relative to light sources just feet away from the character...Resistance didn't do either of that as intensely, which made it more apperant almost immediately...its the biggest graphical shortcoming of the frist game, hopefully Res 2 addresses that fully...

you barely touch on the games weapons...lancer aside, Resistance has some of the most absolutely innovative and polished weapons of a shooter to date...being that a 'shooter' has an extremely high focus on shooting weapons...this is a huge selling point for the game...

with that said...the weapons have, in some cases, more than 2 alternate fires...all of which are not pointed out initially...they take time to even realize they exist...if you just played through the single player game, then spent an hour or two online...I understand why you would have missed them, and not noted them...but missing some of the most impressive things in a shooter to date, hardly leaves you with much credibility...

I do agree with you on the online play, at least in terms of depth...a launch title like this that has all kinds of features working perfectly together is very impressive...but it doesn't have the gameplay depth of some other more recent titles...at the time, nothing touched it (some argued Vegas did...haha...playing calypso over and over, chasing a briefcase that the idiot defenders are 'not allowed' to return to the original position is lamer than lame)...

its not a bad review...but I don't see where a 7.2 is justified...and mentioning the original Killzone as something worth comparing this to is insane...Resistance had all the polish and scope of any top tier shooter...its just that it combined the gameplay of other more familiar titles, and didn't really bring anything new, aside from the weapons (something that CoD 4 arguably did too, but pumped up the realism to the point where it rocks)...Killzone 1 failed because it turned the PS2 into a slide projector, and had arguably some of the worst AI in a game to date...yet still managed to average roughly what you gave this game?...seriously dude...

Good comment, some interesting points, especially the weapons. You could expand on this and make your own review.

6.2 - I agree with Paul, you can turn that it to a review it shouldn't be too hard
You misunderstood my comment...I wasn't talking about having an identity crisis...I was mentioning the textures with in the game in regards to them being FLAT. I'm glad someone said something.

Your right I could have gone into more detail about the weapons, now that I look back the same goes for the environment.

I connected Resistance with Killzone in a few different ways but I didn't mention specifically what I thought of the game and what score I would give it. Trust me, it wouldn't be near the average.

EDIT - fenderputty

I've failed 2 Xbox 360 exclusives in the last couple of weeks, and I've never failed a PS3 game.

I'm biased against ANYTHING PS3?

It was more of a joke about the girl thing...I didn't really mean you were a pervert...haha...I just didn't get what you meant, but looking back on it...yeah...the lighting does leave a very fake look to the ground texturing...My comment was more directed at the Gamespot and IGN reviews that simply plopped out a "the art direction has no personality"...which I took as a feeble attempt at criticizing an aspect of the game that they personally didn't care for, yet had no credible reason on why...that wasn't directed at your comment really, I just thought it was related to identity crisis stuff...

and thanks for clarifying the Killzone stuff...the way it was compared left me to believe you would have given Killzone the same score...if you are saying Resistance is a 7.2 or w/e...and you would give Killzone 1 a 4.5 or something...then thats fine...they are in no way similar, even counting the 4 years between them right now...

I don't know...I don't want to go through and write my own review...this is great...its just I think the review was good at nailing the lacking points of the game, but never seemed to praise the better parts...the above average single player length...the incredibly deep weapon lineup, etc...My score would only be like an even 8 right now...but would have been close to a 9 at launch (when comparing it to the stuff available at the time, such as Gears, Vegas, and CoD 2)...compared to the end of 2007 with Warhawk, Halo 3, and CoD 4...it doesn't hold up nearly as well as it did in late 2006...

I have a huge Warhawk review that I typed up when it was slow at work one day...haven't posted it yet though...you should write one up as well...and we can see how similar we are...there wasn't one thing in this review that I wouldn't have touched on either...My review would have ended up being nearly indentical I would imagine, with just an extra paragraph dedicated to the weapons...

7 - Well ... considering you're tough in reviews
and that your biased against anything PS3, I don't see this is really a bad thing. Stuff like textures and lighting were an issue because it was a launch title and the engine wasn't as advanced. Now ... after Ratchet and some more time, I'm sure thing will look top notch. They do seem to be making leaps and bounds of improvement with each new installment.

You did point out how flawless the online funtionality is though. The clan system, buddy system, squad mics and lagless worldwide servers are top notch. This excites me beacuse I feel like RFOM 2 will be able to pull of 60 people rather well. Games like COD4, which are great, fail in this area pretty bad.

I also feel like some of your other issues will be addressed in the sequal. From the details that I've seen, a lot of additions (classes, vehicles etc) wil be added to make the experience that much more memorable.

Personally ... I would give resistance about an 8.5. It's an above average shooter with potential to be great. Hopefull Insomniac will actualize some of that potential for it's second go.

woa tough score. I would have given it at least an 8. Why didn't you mention all the really cool weapons you get?? I thought the game was well done and a very good outing for a new IP. Its actually my favorite FPS game as far as story goes, next to call of duty 4 of course. Online meh. Resistance 2 is going to own though

this game is well over a 8 anywhere else but come into a user review from a dude who doesnt even have a PSN tag is very fishy. Why a XBL tag but no PSN?

Agree.. Resistance only sold a single copy, due to the PS3's first months incompetent gaming lineup
